R9 290x Delayed?

Being passionate about hardware on a forum dedicated to hardware.
Fuck me, right?

Maybe you should go to www.[L]impdickForums.com where people just casually talk about their computer hardware.

Some people can argue in a calm and rational matter - that's fine. Others go batshit foam at the mouth crazy and act like children. Apparently, you're suggesting that the latter is the [H] way. I would disagree with that assertion.

Don't get me wrong, I like discussing PC hardware matters because it's my hobby. Seeing the extremist one sided views endlessly spouting circular arguments all day long isn't so interesting, though. For situations like that, some people really need to take a chill pill.

I've gone through the thread a few times and I can't find a single post that I would tag as "bat shit crazy". Maybe im just reading things differently.
I think there are a lot of good points. It's a different kind of astmosphere. Most forums, you would see 1-2 replies that would pretty much just be "umm ok? cool its delayed".

I think a lot of people are excited for the 290. I'm excited to see the benchmarks. I'm not a fanboy of either side, but AMD has a pretty bad track record with me and hyping up their products that end up pretty lack luster. I won't let that stop me from buying a good product from them though.

Yeah, actually, nevermind. It happens sometimes but the mods pick up on it fairly quick here. I switch between here and some other forums (OCN) where arguments tend to get out of hand pretty quick. I guess I was making more of a general statement rather than a specific one.

What I've seen on this forum over the last few weeks regarding this AMD release isn't passion. It's bickering, bitching, and whining. Over what?

Most of us really love our hardware. We get passionate about our systems and what we do with them and just hardware in general Passion is a VERY strong emotion and not a terribly rational one either. Fanboyism and bitching is a side-effect of that passion. I don't do it here very often, but I can and do rant up a storm when discussing topics I'm passionate about. It's just a part of human nature.

And that's why some of us say that some of you guys take this shit a bit too seriously sometimes. I love my hardware too. And that goes for all my hobbies, be it car parts, computer parts, or gun parts, amongst other things. But I don't get all [H]eated about it.

Step back away from the keyboard, take a breath, have a beer, and realize it's just a piece of electronics hardware, yanno? Sheesh.

Would be amazing if it was green and red people.

LOL. That would be hilarious. But somebody might get their feels hurt with all the serious business going on.

People dont believe beer helps. I beg to differ.

I TRY not to get too worked up about things, but there is enough evidence on the board to show how well that works some days. When it comes to stuff like this I don't tend to get overly worked up. I don't believe in brand loyalty so that helps quite a bit.

Change the beer to a Long Island or something and you've got a deal. :p

the NDA is taking too long, I am going INSANE !!!!!!

I can't WAIT any longer. The burden is too great, how can I possibly hold on any longer for real info ?!??!?!?

You seem to be misreading/misunderstanding what I'm trying to talk about on a level that is jaw dropping...

I'm talking about keeping your comparisons apples to apples and you're essentially saying that isn't legit because most no one uses/cares about compute/Titan.

Your comparison is only apples to apples if you care about compute or, maybe, insane resolutions, which most people don't. Your comparison is not apples to apples to the vast majority of people that are in the market for a 600-700 dollar graphics card. Your comparison means absolutely nothing to them. They don't care about it. At all. Do you understand that?

Hey, Frankie. Grab a beer. You're taking this way too serious and your arguments are pretty one sided as well.

Here's how I look at it. I think the price of the 290X is looking to be around 550ish $ based on placeholder pricing that i've heard in the channel - you can see this on a FEW wholesaler websites already. Ignore the rumors about 700$+. Wholesaler pricing determines what final pricing is. I do not think it will be 700$+ , although I could be wrong. Price can change ANYTIME in the channel, but at this time - it looks like 550$-600$ is plausible. At that price, I think it will be a killer card for a card trading blows with the Titan.

You say that the 780 overclocks made the Titan irrelevant. I wouldn't disagree (although Titan *is* better for nutty surround users), but the 290X will still be compared to both the 780 stock and Titan stock in terms of performance. When it comes to overclocking, every launch review will also dedicate one page to determine the overclock potential of the 290X and 290 as well - they will not do the REVIEW based on overclocking (and will instead test stock clocks), but they - like I said - will devote one page to determine the OC headroom of the 290X. From what i've seen on EXPreview and chiphell, the 290X overclocks very well on air and you can expect higher than a 10% gain with overclocking on the 290X. So while the GTX 780 can overclock well, I think the 290X can as well. That's my speculation, though. So look at it this way. GTX 780 overclocks well. So does Titan (with a modded BIOS). I'm sure the 290X will overclock decently too. So I more or less look at overclocking as a non-factor in a launch review, although having 1 page dedicated to it to *show* the potential of the new uarch is welcome. If the 780 overclocks with 10-15% headroom, I think the 290X will as well. Just my guesstimate.

So basically the situation boils down to pricing. If the 290X is 550-600$ and trades blows with Titan *and* overclocks decent on air? That is a winner card. Your point about overclocking the 780 isn't irrelevant, I agree in many ways - but, that said, all of these cards can overclock. The Titan overclocks very well with the modded TI BIOS. I'm sure the 290X overclocks well also.

So it all boils down to price. If the 290X is below 600$, I think that's a killer card and MAY force nvidia price cuts. And really, there's nothing to NOT like about that. On the other hand, if the card is 700$, screw that.

Basically, this is a win win situation for EVERYONE assuming AMD prices the card competitively (and by that, I mean less than the 780). IF you like AMD, hey great - you have an option. If you like NVidia, you may get price cuts. There is absolutely nothing to NOT like if AMD pulls this off. IMHO!

Similarly, you don't compare a Nissan GT-R to a Porsche 911 Turbo, you compare it to the faster, higher end 911 Turbo S.

If you're a fanboy that isn't buying either one you compare it to the Turbo S. If you're a consumer that actually has a budget, you bet your goddamn ass you compare it to the non-S.

It's the same dumb lack of logic that causes Chevy fanboys to compare the ZR1 Vette to the GT500, despite the fact that they're not even remotely competitors and Chevy does have a direct competitor (the ZL1)

You are right, it absolutely is. For the educated members of the [H], it's nice to look at and discuss, but ultimately, makes little difference to our final purchasing decision. However, to the rest of the world, being king of the hill sets the tone for the rest of the product lineup, where public perception does matter.

If the rest of the world thinks that the Chevy Sonic is amazing just because the ZR1 is, then the rest of the world = morons. That's part of my point.

Again, I understand your logical comparison. Everyone around these parts does.

No, they really don't.

The point is, once the dust settles on who is the fastest horse in the race, the rest of the lineup and respective pricing will come into full view.

The rest of the lineup isn't solely dependent on who is the fastest horse in the race. Again, what the Titan is or does has zero bearing on someone looking for a $650 graphics card.

With regards to the average consumer though, let's be frank, they would never pay the prices even for a 780 or 290 non-X, regardless of how much value you or I see in them. Even many [H] members have trouble swallowing that sort of a pill.

Who cares what people that aren't going to buy any of them think?

If I'm a gamer buying soon, and can spend around $600, what cards should I look at?

If I'm a gamer buying soon, and can spend around $1200, what cards should I look at?

If you answer the question honestly, you will not ever mention the word Titan.

That is my point. This flagship to flagship, theoretical comparison in a vacuum BS ignores the real world purchase comparisons that 99% of gamers would actually make. It's meaningless except for epeeners and fanboys.

The number of people who do or don't care about a given feature doesn't impact the validity of keeping a comparison between 2 or more products feature-wise as close as possible.

Your comparison means absolutely nothing to them. They don't care about it. At all. Do you understand that?
None of this PC hardware stuff means anything to anyone who isn't a PC hardware enthusiast, IOW nearly all the population of the planet, so by your logic you must also not care about PC hardware.

Are you really sure you've thought about what you're saying thoroughly here?

Yeah, actually it does. Again, for the cheap seats, I'm talking about REAL WORLD comparisons that the vast majority of consumers looking to buy one of these cards will make. You're telling me, the consumer, that I have to take compute into account even if I don't care one iota about it? Don't be absurd.

Lol, your arguments get more and more nonsensical. "This PC hardware stuff" matters to the people that are buying...wait for it...PC hardware. What the rest of the planet cares about doesn't matter. And within that subsection of the planet that cares, which is obviously the subsection of the planet that we're talking about, the vast majority of them will not be comparing the Titan to the 290x, they'll be comparing the 780 to the 290x.

Which is probably why you can't answer my previous question honestly, because you know what the answer is.

The bottom line is that you care about comparisons that only fanboys and epeeners that aren't even buying a card care about, I care about comparisons that are FAR more likely to be made by actual consumers buying a card. Fair enough? No need for further discussion?

Saying most people don't care about the high end is an understatement. Most people don't care about computer hardware at all. They're making purchases based entirely on what that high schooler on the Best Buy floor recommends. Having the top-end card does not matter to this market segment. Ask your non-savvy friends that play pc games occasionally about their graphics card and 90% of them will say "It's Intel so it's good."

I'm talking about REAL WORLD comparisons that the vast majority of consumers looking to buy one of these cards will make.
An apples to apples comparison is real world. What you seem to want is a comparison between mid-range/cheaper AMD/nV cards since that is what the vast majority of the PC gamer market actually buys. The 780 wouldn't show up in such a comparison either of course since its a niche halo product, just like Titan and the R9 290/x.

You're telling me, the consumer, that I have to take compute into account even if I don't care one iota about it?
Yes actually you do, if you want to make a fair comparison that is. Even if you don't care about a given feature other people do and the features that developers actually target changes over time too.

Lol, your arguments get more and more nonsensical....Which is probably why you can't answer my previous question honestly, because you know what the answer is.
All I did was use your own reasoning on the PC market as a whole. If it comes off as nonsensical then maybe you need to reassess it. Also just because you reject an answer via poor/faulty reasoning doesn't mean it is dishonest.

the only things that matter are the ones I care about, anyone who says otherwise loves eepeeners/fanboys/<insert homosexual metaphor here>
My how passive aggressive of you!! You have an personality only a mother could love what with the up-yours attitude you're sporting. Good luck with that, you're probably going to need it.

Edit: Budget based buying decisions have nothing to do with what I am talking about. Or what you were talking about either. This is known as shifting goalposts! HTH

Have patience....R9 290x will get here when it gets here. No sooner.

Im using a 7800 GTX (yeah thats two zeros) till this damn 290x comes out. Don't laugh though, that 8 year old card will still play most games on at least low settings(my laptops gpu is better lol). I seriously considering going with a 780 very soon, though, with all of the apparent delay.

My precious.... *walks off into a dark cave, not to be seen for days and days on end*

about damn time you got a sample. looking forward to the review. hope you can squeeze in a blurb about overclocking, if not official numbers.

when its released we can close this thread.
then start it up again in april when N starts the same shit.

Its all about the $$$ and the 4% improvement for only $$$$$$$$$$$
weeeeeee

Nvidia has never really cared about being competitively priced though. AMD seems to care a little more about that stuff. A 290x that beats the Titan priced competitively with a 780 or a 290 that beats the 780 priced competitively with a 770/770TI (if once is announced) would be amazingly priced cards that could give AMD a huge edge. That said, this seems to be a kind of pointless conversation given Roy's tweet.

A 780 beater priced like a 770 would definitely open my wallet, and I'd be purchasing my first AMD card since the 9500, back when it was still ATI.
