not a noobie, but i havent built a pc in several years and i have not followed along with new hardware at all, so im looking for advice on building/upgrading to a "current, semi-upgradeable, mid-level, bang-for-buck" kinda pc:p

1) What will you be doing with this PC? Gaming? Photoshop? Web browsing? etc
I've been absent from gaming for a while, but would like to get back in to it. otherwise just general websurfing, some accounting/bookkeeping,
2) What's your budget? Are tax and shipping included?
somewhat flexible, but looking at about $5-600 all in max.
3) Which country do you live in? If the U.S, please tell us the state and city if possible.
vancouver, bc, canada. will likely pick everything up from local NCIX
4) What exact parts do you need for that budget? CPU, RAM, case, etc. The word "Everything" is not a valid answer. Please list out all the parts you'll need.
CPU, ram, MB, video card
5) If reusing any parts, what parts will you be reusing? Please be especially specific about the power supply. List make and model.
XFX Pro750w PSU, antec solo case, corsair H60 cooler, corsair 120gb ssd(and 1tb, 2tb disk drives)
6) Will you be overclocking?
probably not. i may dabble for the easy gains, but not hardcore like back in the day.
7) What is the max resolution of your monitor? What size is it?
run a 1080p 32" tv as a monitor, i may replace this with 24-27" 1080p dual screens in the near future
8) When do you plan on building/buying the PC?
as soon as i figure out what to buy
9) What features do you need in a motherboard? RAID? Firewire? Crossfire or SLI support? USB 3.0? SATA 6Gb/s? eSATA? Onboard video (as a backup or main GPU)? UEFI? etc.
id like crossfire/sli support, usb 3.0, sata6b, esata would be nice but not necessary. OBV is always handy to have when you need it.
10) Do you already have a legit and reusable/transferable OS key/license? If yes, what OS? Is it 32bit or 64bit?
64bit windows 7, its fine for now.

i figure on 8gb of ddr3 either way, im just not sure if i should go amd or intel. ive been an amd guy for a long time now, but right now i just want what will serve me best at a reasonable price. video card is the other question mark. ive got a x3 720 phenom paired with a 4770 video card now so anything newer should be an upgrade. i certainly dont need the best of the best, just something midlevel that can handle most games at reasonable settings. i figure if i really get in to gaming more then i can look at pairing a video card.

if i can get away with a little less than my target price even better. thanks.

Any particular Canadian online stores that you would prefer to buy from?

Which games are you considering?

What's the age of the PSU?

What's the model on the SSD? What are the brands, models, and ages of your hard drives?

Which edition of Windows 7 do you have?

If we have to cut a few cost corners (let's say, so you could get a good video card), could you live without SLI/CrossFire support?

answers in bold

Which games are you considering?

really not sure. no strategy games, more fps or adventure games. like i said, been away from them for a while. i think i just want the ability to try some stuff here and there, if i cant play certain new or top of the line stuff then no big deal.

What's the age of the PSU?

2 years old, but been in storage unused for the last year.

What's the model on the SSD? What are the brands, models, and ages of your hard drives?

ssd: http://www.ncix.com/products/?sku=63646&vpn=CSSD-F120GB3/RF&manufacture=Corsair
samsung 750gb, 4yrs
hitachi 1tb, 4yrs
wd black 640gb, 2yrs
wd green 2tb, 2yrs

Which edition of Windows 7 do you have?

ultimate

If we have to cut a few cost corners (let's say, so you could get a good video card), could you live without SLI/CrossFire support?

i guess so

and danny, i live like a 15 minute drive from ncix so it makes sense to go there. that being said i also have prime for amazon canada and if the deal makes sense i will order elsewhere. ncix is just very convenient for me.

The video card is still overpriced. I'd look at the HD 7850 2GB model. Or the GTX 650 Ti 2GB Boost.

I'm wondering if your best value upgrade would be just the video card - say a Radeon HD 7950 - and CPU. Which motherboard do you have? Is it an AM3 motherboard? Because if so, a Phenom II 1100T might do the trick nicely.

If his sig is up-to-date, he supposedly has the Biostar TA790GX. The CPU support list for that mobo doesn't show a single AMD Phenom II X6 CPU.

This 650ti boost 2gb for $135 AR will be better than that 7850 1GB and cheaper too.

Also if you're not going the route of overclocking, I'd just get Haswell for that same price.

i5 4570 $199

Gigabyte GA-B85-D3H $79

Also the volatge on that xms ram is 1.65v, which i wouldn't reccomend.

For the same price and speed, I'd get this GSkill Ripjaws X 1600 1.50v

it is up to date and one reason i am doing this is because my mobo has been giving me constant BSODs, im running on a backup mobo for now until i upgrade.

thanks for the recommendations, didnt even think of the RAM voltage.
edit: is zotac any good? the 1 year warranty doesnt scream quality to me. one reason i gravitate towards xfx and evga is the warranty, has this changed in recent years?

Then an AMD upgrade is probably out.

Yeah forgot about that aspect as well.

Zotac isn't that good IMO. XFX, however, has apparently gone downhill in terms of service apparently.

I agree with Danny, Zotac isn't that great of a brand, but like he said XXX has been slipping lately especially their core series.

If you don't mind ordering the card from newegg.ca , here's a 2GB EVGA 650 ti boost for $159 AR.
