First Look At Windows 8.1

"I have no love for "no change" crowd."

alright that's it...it's not about "change"....it's about a really poor design...the start button is representative of the whole mess...it's about having to buy a friggin touch screen monitor and sit with your arm extended (ooooo how cool, just like the movies!) ....it's ugly...you have limited customization of the desktop....it just plain sucks...just because something is trendy doesn't mean it's good...and "charms"? What 20 year old programmer thought it a good idea to call icons charms....????...
sheep...

This motherfucker gets it. :)

Wow where do I begin with your post.

1) Touch is the change I speak of. My granny hates the PC but she loves the iPad. in other words... more money on mobiles.

2) In subtext, I compared iOS to Windows 8

3) iOS and MacOS X are indeed fused together. Have you even used Mountain Lion? Do you know what the Launchpad is? Do you know where that code came from?

If you want to go toe-2-toe me bring your facts, not your opinions.

Leave HardOCP. Your kind shouldn't be welcome here.

Yep. Win8 also installs of the needed drivers for you motherboard like Ethernet and Sound drivers.
When I try to update the drivers from the ASUS site, Win8 says their outdated. Everything has to be manually downloaded on Win7.

Win8 with auto drivers makes ODD obsolete. Once Win8 installs the Ethernet driver, everything else can be downloaded.

The exact same thing can be said for 7. Verbatim. In a year from now when you have something that the default drivers on the Win8 install DVD don't cover you'll be doing the exact same ethernet driver installer hunt that you do now. Nothing has changed.

Optical drives are already dead. Windows 8 didn't magically cause this.

To me a tablet is fits squarely in class 2 there is no way I can carry it around without a bag. If you are a girl you might have a purse and break this rule but for most guys you need a bag or something.

Man purse or clown pants. Take your pick.

^^

All the "just download app X to fix it!" crowd just don't understand, but as it has been told in the past, that is not a real solution and it shows.

For those too lazy to click links, Windows 8 adoption rate is 20 times slower than Win 7's was in the Enterprise enviroment. That is NOT healthy for MS, but well, whatever.

If you don't care about just the enterprise enviroment, then actual Windows 8 use is still in the gutter:
http://www.neowin.net/news/windows-8-market-share-up-slightly-in-may-windows-7-gains-ground
It went up, and is still lower than Vista's marketshare, higher than individual versions of OS X, but lower than the bundle of all OS X versions.

And I don't know why people keep brining up something that everyone knew before 8 saw the light of day was going to be the case. Enterprise adoption of this release of Windows, no matter what, was going to be low because of where it fell in the cycle. Windows 7 was the long term enterprise Windows OS from day one. That said, for enterprises looking at tablets Windows 8 has potential. And the last time I checked Microsoft still makes money on Windows 7.

Where's SkyDrive required?

No. They are bringing a feature no one in the enterprise market gives a fuck about. Your to obtuse to see that if users figure this out it will be a disastrous for support and security.

Windows 8 setup is bad as it makes you feel that you need to have a MS account. They should have setup PC with out this shit and and option to setup a MS account button.

My beef is that I can't easily get a windows 7 workstation I am stuck with this fucking garbage and no way to control this fucking garbage either.

I just don't have a word in my vocabulary what I really think of you and your "suggestions and solutions"

WoW, people bitch and bitch and bitch and bitch one more time about the start button.

Do me a favor, install a start menu app, I know you are lazy and you shouldn't have to do it, but if you cant take five minutes to install it, well sucks for you!

google poki start menu, and let me tell you, you and your mother and your whole family will love it. It is the best start menu app I have seen and it works really really good, beats windows 7 start menu all day long. It is actually better than start 8, which I paid 5 bucks for.

So once again, make your life easier and stop bitching and download here

http://www.pokki.com/windows-8-start-menu

and yes you can change the start button to windows start button, I am sure I saved you a little bitching there as well.

I always get confused when I see your name in the last post, because thats the name I use on some other forums, and the name I used in IRC from 1996 to like 2003.

So you disable it. It's not like you don't have to lock these kinds of things down with any OS since there are web interfaces and even desktop apps that support cloud file systems.

So setup Windows 8 with a local or company domain account.

I think with 8.1 there's a lot more control over what can be run even without a Server 2012 R2 server. But I imagine that you'll complain regardless of what is or isn't available. What I don't understand is if all of these problem exist then why did people bring in 8?

Looks like Microsoft is cutting licensing costs for 7 to 10.1" tablets for both Windows 8 and RT and is throwing in Office non-commercial as well for Windows 8: http://www.computerworld.com/s/arti...ws_kicks_in_free_Office_to_spark_tablet_sales. Of course they aren't saying how much but my guess is that the licensing costs for these devices is probably not much more than what some of these companies paying Microsoft for Android. So the big cost difference on these smaller tablets is going to come down to hardware. Hmmm.

You're arguing from the assumption that people want to install this trash operating system in the first place. Most of us are here to poke fun at the people that actually "use" W8. :p

Why so sensitive?

I use 8 at home and have deployed it in several production environments. I could give a shit about what you or anyone else thinks other than that the incessant, uninformed bitching will deter people who might actually benefit from and like the OS.

It isn't perfect by any means. But every "hater" that I have exposed to 8 has come away from the keyboard after only a few minutes saying the same thing: Wow, it's not really that bad. I don't understand what all the fuss is about. I know one person that tried it and reinstalled Windows 7 after a few hours.

Slow adoption rate in the enterprise means nothing. Many businesses have just (finally) moved away from XP in the last few years. They're not going to jump again right away. There's no need and 7 is still readily available from big OEMs like Dell.

It's not hard to use Windows 8, in fact i t functions identically on the desktop to Windows 7 except the start menu isn't shoved into the corner of the screen in a tiny, hard-to-read window. As with Win7 I just hit the start button on my keyboard and type in Win8 anyway so it functions literally the exact same way as it always had. Real users are actually using their systems, not sitting here on the forums whining that some people like Win8 when they don't like it, so they must be fools for doing so.

Such a neutral viewpoint and unbiased.... :p. You are truly an exemplary debater.

It's pointless to argue with people with no first hand experience with Windows 8. It's like the guys who hate Vista to this day but preach Windows 7 which is basically a re-skinned version of what Vista was after SP1 and a few months of driver maturity. Vista at least had legitimate launch problems that I can understand people being peeved with.

Start Menu users don't want to admit it, but the Start Menu hasn't been the most efficient way to navigate your programs in Windows for a while now. As I said earlier in the thread, it was designed to be intuitive and easy to learn, not fast or efficient.

It boggles the mind that people are so willing to spend money on the performance of their hardware, but they will vigorously defend dated and slow methods of using their own software as if you've just insulted their mother. They'll sputter and stutter and come up with weird use cases like wanting to view every installed program on the computer while watching an HD video.

People who were still heavily using the Start Menu need to concentrate less on their phat overclocks and a little more on optimizing their workflow methinks.

Who needs a Start button?

Also, how hard is it to hit Esc when you cold boot. I have my PC set to sleep after an hour of inactivity and when it awakes Windows 8 boots right into the desktop.

Wasn't arguing about ipad like tablets. Those are clearly smaller than Surface Pro.

No, not clearly smaller. Maybe smaller than my iPad Mini, but not smaller than my iPad 2.

It isn't about the start menu. It is the fact that the start screen is utterly horrible. I don't need giant pastel colored icons that look like something designed around an 80's prom taking up my entire screen. While my vision is rather poor, I don't exactly have trouble seeing icons pinned to my task bar either.

Hopefully it just loads the link and not the image..This forum really needs spoiler tags so pictures don't auto load unless people specifically click on it.

This is a good desktop on a non touch device. I don't even care if the start button is there or not as 95% of what I need is pinned on this machine and I have a different set pinned on another. The rest can easily be gotten too by hitting the windows key and about 3 keystrokes most of the time. Metro is a godawful mess and the stupid charms bar and hot corners aren't any better.

You are aware you can run Windows 8 just like that right? You don't have to use Metro. This is why I don't understand the hate.

Yet another win 8 supporter who doesn't understand the fact that it isn't about the start menu. It is about the fact that Metro is essentially a Full screen start menu and is completely unnecessary and is an extremely inefficient form of the start menu. It is also about the fact that the charms bar and hot corners in a "Non Touch" environment are the single two dumbest idea's in the history of windows. Metro is nothing more than an "Icon Driven Start Menu". So instead of having file/program lists you have giant icons over your entire desktop. I suppose this is good if you are completely blind, the rest of us don't need an entire tile for a single program. Don't call the start menu inefficient when metro is the very Definition of inefficient.

You are aware you can run Windows 8 just like that right? You don't have to use Metro. This is why I don't understand the hate.

Actually, no you can't. Sure if you are just using those few programs pinned. However the second you have to do anything else on the computer, Metro gets thrown in your face and you have to dance around that stupid mess.

The thing is, If you like it..more power too you. I really do not give a damn if you like that UI. The fact of the matter is a large percentage of users DON'T and there is no valid argument as to why those in a non touch environment needed that crap made mandatory and not optional. You can make up arguments all you want about it being more efficient and blah blah blah which all boils down to bullshit. You like it, fine but it isn't efficient on any level, unless you are one of those people who has to see 50 things going on your display at any given point. Then I suppose it might be. For the rest of us it is just an eyesore.

More opinion stated as fact. Nice use of hyperbole though. C+ :p

Except it doesn't function "literally" the exact same way. Windows 8.0 search doesn't default to an "All" setting like Windows 7 and Windows 8.1. Look up the definition of literally before you start with your derp bullshit.

Changing the default search setting spawned funny videos where people couldn't find things the same way in Windows 8.0.

Oh may be because w8 is faster than win7 in every way. Care to explain why you hate it? W8 is the smoothest os I have tried to date. You can hate it pointlessly as much as you want, I could care less. To each his own but you can't make me go back to 7.

They added a listed view of programs as an alternative to the big tiles. fyi, if you didn't watch the video, or are blind and missed it :p

Are there any solid stats to back this claim up, or is this still just based on perception? I'm not saying you are wrong, just curious.

Prove anything I said in that post was exaggeration or false.

Didn't watch it, don't care too. Zero interest in win 8 until an announcement is made there will be an option to completely disable metro, hot corners and charms bar. Some have hinted at it, but have not provided absolute proof as such.

There aren't solid stats on it and there never will be. It is impossible to directly prove. However the extremely poor adoption rate and the fact that Win 8 has gotten more negative backlash than Vista or ME even did allows one to make a reasonable speculation.

I seriously don't know why Kyle/Steve don't put ads in these front page threads. I really don't see any reason they word the headlines like they do and not profit from it.

Maybe so they can just do this:

What I don't understand is why they took the start menu and made it an obnoxious start screen that totally imposes on your work space, but things like USB auto-run they made smaller and less annoying and still easy to use for people who don't know the magic buttons.

It's like two entirely different design philosophies were used on the same product.

Yes, Windows 8 does include a "full screen start menu". Completely unnecessary? Opinion. Extremely inefficient? Opinion. I think it's more efficient because the tiles permit me to see email, calendar info, weather, etc. at a glance without having to open a particular application.

Has Windows 8 received more negative backlash than Vista or ME? You may feel like that's the case but that doesn't mean it's true.

I could go on but it's ultimately pointless and futile. The OS doesn't work for you. Sorry about that. You'll have to find something else than you find acceptable.

Don't call the start menu inefficient when metro is the very Definition of inefficient.

You missed my point entirely. I'm not comparing the Start Menu in Windows 7 with the Start Menu in Metro. They are both intended to be intuitive but not fast ways of navigating your programs. In short, they are for people who are slow and aren't held back by the design. Which one is better? I can't say, because I stopped using the Start menu about the same time I left Windows XP behind, and have no interest in spending more than a half a second with some menu covering any portion of my screen.

I'm comparing using the start menu as a mouse-driven way to navigate your programs to using the much more efficient keyboard approach which minimizes the amount of time you spend with anything popped up on your screen at all.

We can already do everything the live tiles do with overlays that don't obstruct your entire work-space view. What makes adding that functionality to an opaque secondary screen better?

They made a tablet interface and forced it on productivity users. No amount of denial will make that a good idea. They need more options.

Oh I am sorry, I didn't realize I needed to explain that the word "and" starts another statement and doesn't tie it to the context of the first. I figured that most people would know the difference between the following formats;
"It is about the fact that Metro is essentially a Full screen start menu and is completely unnecessary and is an extremely inefficient form of the start menu."

"It is about the fact that metro is essentially a Full screen Start menu, Completely unnecessary, extremely inefficient......"

Alright ! They've fully integrated the Windows 3.0 non-overlapping multi-window interface!

Most excellent!

I've specifically mentioned the ability to customize the hot corners because that's what Microsoft said:

Better Mouse and Keyboard Options

PCs today are evolving for a world of mobile computing where people interact with their devices through touch, and we designed Windows 8 for this. But we also recognize there are many non-touch devices in use today – especially in the commercial setting. As such we’ve focused on a number of improvements to ensure easier navigation for people using a mouse and keyboard.

We’ve improved the way you navigate to Start with the mouse by changing the Start “tip” to be the familiar Windows logo. The new tip appears anytime you move the mouse to the bottom left corner of the screen, and is always visible on the taskbar when on the desktop. There are also options to change what the corners do, and options to boot into alternate screens. For example, if you prefer to see the Apps view versus all the tiles, you can choose to have the Start screen go directly to Apps view.

http://blogs.windows.com/windows/b/...ng-the-windows-8-vision-with-windows-8-1.aspx

There probably won't be any options to disable Metro.
