Xbox One blocks used games - goodbye MS!

Lmao pay a fee to play on a secondary account. Fuck off MS

And lets see what Gamestop has to say now since MS just killed their business.

In some scenarios this is a superior way to go.

You and a friend could split the cost of a game, then both install it and both technically own the game forever.

I don't know if the same copy can be played against itself, though. If it can be played against itself, you may actually be saving money with this.

If this is true I'm all over it. I'd rather pay MS a fee to split it with my friend than pay Gamestop money to buy a disc someone wiped themselves with and then sat on.

According to an update on the article if you install the game on a different console it automatically deactivates the other install. So you couldn't split the cost of the game. Unless you don't connect it online?

Good bye Xbox. This generation my gaming trinity will be PS4, WiiU and of course PC. Not that this would affect me directly because I buy used games veeeery rarely. But out of principle I refuse to support this.

Every game will probably come with a cd key, as I can't see them pressing unique discs.

Welcome to reality, we've had this on PC for years. You're naive if you don't think Sony will soon follow the $$$.

Wait, let me make sure I've got this straight, can we play Xbox 360 games on the new XBox One or not?

I am pretty sure the "fee" will cost just as much or just a little bit less than the retail price of the game. The article mentions Microsoft can somehow detect passing on a game to a friend vs reselling. In essence, they're the same thing; you're handing the game to someone else, so that is what really is baffling because it says that the disc must be tied a single xbox account.

I guess the 2 scenarios will look like this.

Scenario 1. You buy a game for $60, play it, beat it and want to get rid of it. You go to gamestop, you sell it to them for $30. This would require you to untie the game from your account. They turn around and resell the game for $40.

Scenario 2. You buy a game for $60, but your friend wants it too. He agrees to pay the 2nd owner fee, so that way the game is tied to your account and you both get to play. The fee costs $50.

Difference is, reselling means you get to obviously sell your game and make money back, and even buying games cheaper than the 2nd owner fee. While the 2nd owner fee allows you and a friend to both have a copy.

Whatever how this system works, it's clearly a nickel and dime scheme, so fuck them.

Wait, let me make sure I've got this straight, can we play Xbox 360 games on the new XBox One or not?

No. If you buy a game for the new Xbox One it ties to your account so if selling it used will require the next person who plays it to pay an undisclosed sum to unlock it to play on their own account.

It sucks.

So, what if you have multiple accounts on your xbox because of your family?

Does that require you to pay extra so others in your household can play it, since it will be tied to one account...? Or will it be any users on that console can play the game...

Also, what if I want to go take my game to a friends place, or let him borrow it....

geez. Kind of not liking this aspect.

Then you have to buy a copy for each account. Its pretty shitty but that's what they are doing. They could reverse this stance if enough of an uproar is supplied by the gaming community.

Q: Will Xbox One allow players to trade in, purchase and play pre-owned games?
A: We are designing Xbox One to enable customers to trade in and resell games. We’ll have more details to share later.

The editor of Xbox magazine Tweeted "On second hand games: you buy disc, it installs, you play from HD. Sell disc, it installs to new console and deactivates your install."

I guess we really have no idea what's going on. If XBOX One can be played offline, who's to stop someone from installing a bunch of games, then selling them and never reconnecting their system to be 'deactivated', unless the One requires Internet once a day or something.

My guess is that your entire library's authenticity is being checked at intervals whenever you're connected to Live. And since you have to connect to Live to register a new game...

It'll probably be like their Zune Music service.

For a monthly fee you could download any of the music they offered, but every 14 days you had to sync your library, or the DRM would lock-down that piece of music.

I can see them doing something similar with games.

Install a game, it "syncs" your registered games with the server. If the console isn't "synced" within the 14 day period, it locks out anything that isn't "synced".

Notice that they said an internet connection is required, but not always.

I really have a feeling all of this will be less apocalyptic than most of you are making it out to be. You would have to be a fool if you thought that Microsoft could come in and basically destroy the used game industry. I think Best Buy, Gamestop, and Gamefly have enough cash to influence Microsoft a little bit. I mean, what if your friend wanted to borrow a game from you since you beat it? You can't? You can't share? Having to purchase a game multiple times so people can play the same game on one console but on different accounts? No way.

What i listed above is suicide. And it's silly to write off Microsoft until they clarify which they said they would do. I think this is planned. Think about it, they don't offer much details about this specifically to see the reaction of the population online. Remember how Microsoft reacted to Adam Orth's tweets about the "Always On" feature everybody was bitching about? I honestly think it won't be as bad as you all think... but on the other hand if it is, then I won't be buying a Xbox One.

I'm out of the console market anyway, PC was lagging for many years but with indie titles, it seems to be doing better than it has been in a long time. I don't even use the 360 that I have now (other than a select few co op titles)

they have zero leverage against microsoft.

This is not "goodbye Xbox", it's "goodbye Game Stop". The only thing that will change is you will not buy used games. The bad thing is, I doubt that like Steam and Gamefly and Amazon, you will get huge discounts on games like the PC. Maybe this will be thing that breathes new life into PC gaming.

so an internet connection is required? Does MS not understand hte ENTIRE WORLD isn't connected to the internet and many people (especially the casual players) don't always have an internet connection for the console.

I know people that have an xbox 360 and don't use it on the internet, they merely have wireless internet for their laptop and it's no where near fast enough for playing online games, etc, just for checking mail/surfing the web.

are you guys reading anything they're saying?

you can still sell/buy used games and you don't need an internet connection to play, on the post show they straight up said you can play offline.

Nearly every console title I buy, the rare times I do so, I get used. Having to pay a fee for that privilege completely kills the system for me.

I never buy second-hand, but I rent and borrow from / lend to friends all the fucken time, which the "Xbox One" seems to kill as well. It's all very lame.

Do you not understand they said it's not "always online, but an internet connection is required."

The system won't have to ALWAYs be connected, but it WILL require an internet connection from time to time, when you install games, sell them, etc how on earth do you think the system will be able to "flag" when a game is tied to your account and then another? It requires an internet connection, so it can uninstall the game from one account once it's been installed on another, to do this it will require an internet connection.

Yea you can play offline, but that doesn't mean jack shit to people that don't have/use an internet for their consoles.

This is without a doubt going to really hurt Xbox, and its not backwards compatible.

One thing is for sure is its definitely the beginning of the end for GameStop. So I guess it's all good for me because I never liked any if the xboxs and had no plans on buying the new one plus I hate GameStop.

The naming scheme suddenly makes sense now, one game, one account, one install, one console I'm not buying.

rofl, good one.

but technically they are allowing multiple installs. still though..

They said that people in the same house will not have to buy the game again, but that doesn't make sense because it won't work at a friends house unless the games owner signs in. They may force you to sign in with the gamer tag of the person who bought it in order for other people at your own house to play. They may also have some code that links the game to the console it was initially installed on, which would allow the DRM to bypass whether the purchaser was logged in or not.

When you buy a new game and bring it home to play it you will have to be online to activate the game to your account. If the connection drops out for a day you can keep playing but you have to 'phone home' once every 24 hours, even for single player. Your new XBOX One can never go more than 24 hours without Internet.

I HIGHLY doubt this is true. Microsoft hasn't confirmed shit. Wait for E3.
