Holy! When did this happen! Age of Empire 2 HD remake!

If your order before the release date, you can get AoE II HD and AoE III for $27...if you don't already own AoE III.

huge fan of this franchise

but, they are going to have to publish the DRM situation if they want my money

It's Steamworks. Says right in the first post of this thread. Also says it in the video linked in the first post.

But but Microsoft hates PC gamers ...

Does this look like AOE4 to you? They took an old game and put about 3 weeks worth of development into it and are selling it for $20. Yeah thats proof they dont hate PC gamers lol. Heres your barely modified version of a 14 year old game, still looks like shit but hey you can play in 1080p now fork over $20.

Loved AOE3, but I'm super excited for AOE2 HD. I bought the whole AOE3 pack on GFWL a few years back when they had it for $0.10 (Yeah, 10 cents... they really did that.)

More like:

"here's the best game in the AOE franchise, updated to work on modern machines (multi-monitor support, steam-integrated multiplayer, modern resolution support)"

The orignal AoE2 + Conquers still has a thriving community. This was a very smart move IMO and will make them a lot of money.

I know I'll be getting it even though I own the physical discs of the original game+expansion.

Amen, I'd rather have this than a mediocre new IP, why hate?

AOE3's biggest downfall was the time period. It is simply way more fun to build walled in fortresses than having open colonies (IMO anyway)

Definitely getting this. I remember aoe 1 and the expansion, and when this came out with all the new units and factions. Holy shit did I have a lot of fun with it.

You could build walls in AoE3 too, it's just that they were useless against cannons. In fact, if the walls were close enough to your settlement, they were entirely useless since units can hit anything in their FOV, which extends beyond enemy walls for some reason, effectively allowing missile attacks to decimate everything beyond the wall and despite the wall.

I just saw this on the Steam store this morning. After having my original AoE2 and both expansion pack discs used and abused for years since it originally released, I bought the jewel case version from Wal-Mart about 6 months ago and have been playing it multiple times a week. Sucks that I have to Shift-Tab out of the game and disable Explorer.exe every time just to get it to render properly and I'm limited to 1024x768, but it's one of those few games that I can deal with such nuances because the gameplay is worth it.

Anyway, added to wishlist. 10% off pre-order until it's released in a month, to boot! Dream come true for me, as I regard AoE2 as one of my all time favorite games. At least we all know that the city building portion of this game will work perfectly on release day!

This is awesome. I used to play this back in the day and was one of my friends and I favorite games.

welcome to the concept of indirect fire

You ever tried installing the original game on Windows 7? It barely works without a VM. If anything, this is a way to make the game available to current gamers, because without an older operating system, you're out of luck.

Not to mention that this release will restore multiplayer functionality. This is important because, and I'm not sure if you know this, multiplayer configurations for 15 year old games tend to be incompatible with broadband WANs. And since it will be in Steam, it will be easier to invite your friends to games.

And yes...it will now be in 1080p. Your monitor won't be having a seizure as it tries to revert to an old, painful resolution.

I'm sorry that you're pained by all these terrible things being added to an older game and then released for a bargain price.

A bargain price? $20 for something FE already has for free? Im just not seeing the bargain price here.

However, forgotten empire is a mod by some group of fans. It wont get as big as microsoft releasing a hd version

I really hope l they allow for larger worlds: even the largest world in AOEII was elbow-to-elbow with more than four players. If you've ever played 10 person multi, you can't travel more than a couple of steps without finding Annother person's town centre.

I just have this awful feeling in my gut that GFWL is going to taint this somehow. I know it's not listed..

That would agreeably be the one cmplaint I had about AoE2. I usually select the Islands map at the largest size, but only limit it to 2 or 3 opponents. I do hope they were able to increase the map size, but if not, it's not going to deter me from buying it. :D

Thats no fun, the computer AI is terrible at water maps, they have no idea what to do lol.

I still play AOE 2, on my windows 7 pc all the time with my cousin. The rendering issues go away if you just stop explorer.exe when you get in the game. I wouldn't call that barely playable.

In any case, yes you could get just about everything this does already.
1. Online, just use hamachi, the lan system works just fine.
2. You can mod for bigger resolutions, but frankly it doesn't look that, or is hard to play.

BUT!
1. I like the idea of being able to play easier with friends, and possible people here on this forum.
2. The higher res is nice.
3. I am hundred% welling to support any company welling to support and old game and bring new life to it, without ruining it. Even more so, when its a game a spent days playing.

Lastly,
1. I have age of empire 3 on steam, and it doesn't require GFW, i can't see this needing it. .

I'm pretty sure Microsoft has abandoned the GFWL project, mostly because everyone buys games on Origin or Steam nowadays...

Thank goodness for that. I will pick this up most likely. AoE2 was just awesome.

That's great. Steam and Origin are supported worldwide (same goes for Blizzard's games), while GFWL is not, hence many of the games are not available in certain countries. Its seriously outdated and is so far behind they might as well just discontinue it.

I think they still support GFWL because it is shared with xbox :(

I cant wait for this. The good ole days. I LOVED playing AoE I and II in the MS Gaming Zone back in the day. This is so fuckin awesome.

Multi-monitor support? Hell yes!

"Just stop explorer.exe"? That sounds like a solution for a Windows ME problem.

And yes...you can use third-party solutions or mods to get the game to work as it was intended. The new version will work as intended without them.

Just to be clear, The Forgotten Empires rollup addresses all these issues in one nice running package. The only thing I see new that this re-release is bringing to the table is multi monitor support.

Does anyone know of some good mods for the original AOE 2 that allows for larger than giant maps? My google searches are coming up dry..

Wow, that looks.. not at all improved. I'm sorry, I loved the original, but if you are going to charge me $20 for something, put $20 worth into it! Look at some of the great games that are coming out, that are completely FREE. War Thunder, World of Tanks etc etc. Completely free, and not at all pay to win. I can't justify spending $20 for something that took 1 guy 3 weeks to do.

Wrong. Both War Thunder and World of Tanks rely on microtransactions and premium currencies. I know that in War Thunder, you can easily buy crew points to make your planes fly better, instead of grinding them out. Oh...and War Thunder isn't yet determined to be free. It's in beta.

Getting this game for sure. One of the best strategies of all time. I hope i can still set unlimited population some how in the files :)

Wrong.

Just because you CAN spend money, doesn't mean you HAVE to spend money. Hence, free to play.

War Thunder will be free, once the 'full game' is out. Its based on a Free to Play model. Yes, you can pay, but you don't have to. You can just as easily improve your pilots skills by simply playing the game.

World of Tanks is the same principle, you don't have to spend a dime, and no one that plays with real money will have an advantage over you other then getting the next tier tanks faster.
