LG 29EA93

I am interested in this monitor since the new Dell 3014 will be pricey but the LG seems like its not in stock anywhere like Newegg or Amazon, I wonder if the Dell version of the LG uses the same panel..

I don't think that one is the new revision.

How can you tell? Here is something from the reviewer

"How do we differentiate the new awesome monitor from the old crummy one in the story if both have an identical name?"

he answers

"That I don't have info on. It never went on sale in the USA I believe, as they wanted the fixes to be done, but the new version started rolling out last month to places where it was already on sale."

Most confusing eh?

How can you tell?

I don't think the new Version has officially been released yet.

*EDIT* Just saw your edit. Yeah, I don't know why they can't just put the revision in the title. Why make it more difficult for people to spend money? LOL

Exactly!!! i want it bad. The one with the new revision is awesome. Why can't we firmware upgrade our monitors? sigh

"I don't know why they can't just put the revision in the title" well they want to get rid off the crappy ones first.

And if this have NVidia Vision 2 with LightBoost, I imagine that people in this forum would go frigging crazy!

I do wonder why LG didn't make this with passive 3D.

"I saw the same thing so I went to the Fry's by my place that said that had it in stock. The display model had a manufacturing date of Dec 2012 and Rev00 so I'm guessing it's the old one. My bet is the ones they are selling are older since no one else seems to have it in stock.

I'll admit looking at the display model I was surprised how small it looked. For as long as it is, the height of the monitor reminds me a 21 or 22 inch monitor."

Exactly. But knowing LG over the years they ALWAYS leave something behind in their products

My understanding is that the passive polarized alternating lines are slightly visible even in 2D mode. I'm just going to wait for the Oculus Rift or similar HMD for real discrete stereoscopic display. Its so much better than shutter glasses

Really? That doesn't sound right, I would think the height would be somewhere around 12 inches. It would be great if you could measure it the screen.

I have a 24" 16:10 which is 12.7 inches tall and I'm hoping this 29" LG would be similar.

The dimensions of the screen

699.7 x 387 x 194.2 mm

Set (with Stand) __- 699.7 x 208.5 x 387
Set (without Stand) - 699.7 x 68.5 x 318

per their website.. that 387 seemed way too tall. 318mm makes sense. about 12.5" tall.

Problem is that is the entire display assembly not the panel.

Anyone who has bought this and tried increasing the refreshrate to 75 or 85+ hz?

Panel height should be very close to a 23" 1080p panel. They have pretty much the same pixel pitch.

Assuming the Dell U2913WM uses the same panel and that Dell's website can be trusted then it looks like it should be 12.16"

However, this doesn't really line up with the pixel pitch comparison.
A 23" 1080p monitor with a pixel pitch of 0.265mm has a height of 11.28"

The 29" ultra-wide has a pixel pitch of 0.26mm and has a height of 12.16"

That doesn't really seem to add up which is why it would be great if someone close to a Fry's could measure the screen.

LG's specs do claim "V-Scanning Frequency 56~75Hz (HDMI 56 ~ 61Hz) - Digital", so 75hz should be fine as long as hdmi isn't used?

I've spoken to a local seller in Korea and asked him which version they have. Had my hopes up guys but here 's his answer.

Hello. Thank you for your interests :)
I contacted to LG, there was no official firmware update.
And the product we have in stock is the early released version.

Please feel free to ask if you have any further questions.

Thank you. Have a good day!
Best regards,

- dream-seller

Damn! i guess this is going to take a while

While I have no problems with Anandtech it has been stated by more then a couple people that it is possible the 'updated' review they posted is false. Not because Anandtech falseified the review, but because LG hand-carried them a 'new' monitor to test.

That being said, if it is indeed *just* a firmware update that fixed all the issues; One should be able to upgrade even if you have the old version.

Personally, i'd wait for some more reviews to come out. LG hasn't officially released the monitor in the US yet anyways. So maybe the version of the monitor being supplied for the US release will indeed have the updated firmware.

Could be electronics update along with firmware only LG knows. Thing is, monitors aren't firmware upgradable i believe right?

I guess we wait then we have no choice.

I bought this monitor at frys last Friday and the only way to find out the rev is you have to open the box then frys will charge me 15% to get my money back. They have had 2 revisions since the monitor was mentioned back in November and of course I bought the one they made back then.

Gripes/Worries
This monitor is not even for sale in the country except at frys. Not even newegg or amazon has it for sale in the country.
This monitor was showing up on Australia's lg.com not United States.(They added the monitor today)
There is not one youtube video about this monitor except ces coverage and such.
I dont think this monitor has been officially launched in America but somehow frys got them.
I will be desperately trying to get my money back without the restock fee(LOL yeah we will see how that goes).

Now lets cut the bs, this monitor as it stands is absolutely gorgeous. Games and movies are what this monitor is for and it excels at both. This isn't for the resolution snobs that think 2560x1600 is the best thing on Gods green earth. This is for people like me that did not want to step up to a 1440 or 1600p monitor but wanted a bigger monitor and did not want to be required to run sli or some crazy card like the Titan. I have gained more real estate out but it is still 1080 up and down but I have no worries about this. Having the wider view in games not obstructed by bezels is neat but that is if the game even works in 2560x1080. Assassins Creed 3 for example will not run in that resolution at all. It has the black bars on the side so I just have to play that one on my plasma in 1080p. Colors look amazing and the wider view bring games to life in my opinion. Blu rays look amazing also but they're only in 1920x1080 so you have to force the resolution to fill up that 21:9 but it still looks amazing.

I do not notice any ghosting on this monitor and it does have a game mode to tighten up the response time but it says that images can stick if you use the overdrive. Wth? Im not in the dark with a camera trying to catch flickers or anything else cause this is real world monitor usage that im doing. Ips glow is there of course but its not bad.

Paid 727 bucks for this and yes Im kinda salty that its from the first run but it does have usb on them so I dont see why they "cant" do a firmware upgrade. Ill keep my fingers crossed for that.

My suggestion, get the Dell version. Its 649 on newegg right now and it offers height adjustable stand as well as the 3 year advanced warranty and its the same panel. Asus also has one coming out that is supposed to be even cheaper at 599 but just has 2 hdmi ports. This Lg only has a 1 year warranty and no height adjustable stand.

Oh one more thing the AG on here is not aggressive at all. Even the most AG snobs would be pleased.

Just for reference Im running a 680 with a I7 2600k.

Hope my rant answered some questions for people because there is absolutely NO information on this monitor and believe me I have been searching and searching. And If you buy this monitor now I can almost guarantee that It will be rev00 because I dont even know if LG has even officially launched this product in the united states.

Contacted on of the ebay Korean importers, this is what I got;

"Hello. Thank you for your interests :)

There was no official updated of LG 29EA93.
Maybe there are difference between how early it is made and how late it is made.
However, there is no systemically difference."

Do you mind taking several pictures of the monitor in relationship to the desk, you sitting down, that point of view. I'm trying to see exactly what the monitor looks like on a desk. Maybe with a cell phone or can of soda so I can see the scale of the monitor. With content on the screen would be nice. Very much appreciated in advance! I'm trying to decide if I want this or if I want a larger screen such as a 40 - 42" if / win they come out in this format.

I decided to take this monitor back because of the old rev that frys was selling. It looks like LG is trying to clear their stock of these monitors before they release rev 1.25 and I didn't care to spend over 700 bucks on a monitor that had glaring issues. Luckily I took it back to frys and explained my problem and they guy didn't even charge me the 15% restock fee.

While I was boxing it back up I did take some pics for you. Now they are taken with my Note 2 with direct flash on so please excuse them.

You see in the pics that the main reason I took it back is that its just too odd of a resolution and games do not support it 100%. The main game may be supported but menus and you see the cut scenes in max payne shrink down to a little square box in the middle of the screen.

The last pic is for scale. It is below my wifes hp dv6 15.6 laptop.

You can see clearly on the box that these monitors are for Australian market but LG is sneaking them into our channels to get rid of them.

Also you can see the back where it says December 2012 for mfr date and in the lower right you can see rev 00.

Got the monitor from Korea. Pray to receive good panel. There will be a unboxing video in a few days.

I want to buy the 27EA83, and was semi-interested in this one too. But not gonna put out $1000 until the firmware BS is out in the open and settled. 2 different review sites got revised models w/ newer firmware that is night and day difference between retail units, especially for gaming (input lag/response time). But yet nothing is known when or if the retail units are upgradable.

I emailed LG support yesterday to ask, but haven't heard back.

Also, the Dell equivalent to the 29" is a lot cheaper and on sale pretty often. But they don't seem to ever upgrade their firmware. So if you're buying this to game on, and want the full potential, I'd wait until there is real info on the firmware.

Yea, although the manufacturer (LG) responded to some reviews on Newegg and specifically stated that they are only shipping Rev 1.25 now though. Not sure what to make of that, because Newegg could still be sitting on some old stock.

I wouldn't believe some guy responding to newegg posts, especially without a way to confrim it. He's there to make sure there aren't too many negative reviews since newegg is a popular site.

I've already moved on. Lack of info made it a lot easier to do so when there was a sale on the Dell U2713HM for $550 shipped, no taxes. It makes replacing the monitor with another that much easier in the future if I'm not happy with it. LG's support never replied back.

Didn't the Anand review mention that the earlier revision firmware never shipped in the US?

I think at the time of his review the US models hadn't released yet. But no one can confirm whats in the retail US released products. Reviews of cherry picked, one-off monitors that aren't a retail unit are useless. He's obviously has the contacts at LG to find out, but hasn't responded to any questions on the comments of his review. All his review did was drum up confusion, and false sales based on people thinking the monitor is now awesome, but yet no one knows what firmware a retail US unit has, and how it performs.

Here's another useless review that doesn't test anything http://www.gadgetreview.com/2013/03/lg-27ea83-d-27-inch-colorprime-ips-led-wqhd-monitor-review.html I tried to post a comment asking about firmware revisions, w/ links to the 2 different reviews for the new and improved firmware for the 27 and 29" LCD's and it was never approved. So it's another review where the reviewer is just misleading consumers. All he does is talk about the 6ms response time straight from the specs... I don't mean to sound like some conspiracy theorist, but it's as if LG is having people review with the purpose of misleading consumers. If not, then why ignore any questions about it?

I'm sure they are great monitors, but do the retail units have the response times of the 2 reviews with the new and improved firmware that is night and day different? That's what anyone who wants to game on one of these would want to know.

I think I may pick up one from Newegg to see. It's Shoprunner enabled so it's free return shipping. If I do, I'll post a review and some pictures.

Be aware that although return shipping would be free, Newegg charges a 15% restocking fee. So you'll be out quite a bit in that regard if you return it.
