My level 31 witch seems to be having a hard time surviving, especially against chaos attacks. I can't even last a few seconds against the minions spawned by Vaal, lol. Thankfully a higher level player helped me clear Vaal.

I got stuck as well at lvl 20, couldn't beat a lvl 14 act 1 boss. :(

Which one? You talking about the bandit bosses? Those can be tough so if you're new to the game I would advertise for a group on the Noticeboard and General chat. There are others that have problems with those also. The one that gave me the most problems was the flicker strike rogue. Well he's not too bad if you have lots of minions as he will cycle though all of them and you. Just make sure he's dead before you run out of bodies to make zombies with.

Last act one boss, frost/fire mage. she prevented me from casting, sometimes couldn't run away. didn't have all the aoe range spells like my archer did. joined a group and was able to get her.

ahh Merveil.. everyone's favorite dying place

yup, seems I can't find any great wear for my witch. only red stuff for warriors....... my archer is lower level and has higher DPS. meh this sucks.

Ice resist gear changes the battle, sacrifice anything to get more ice resist for that battle, even if there is no other stat on the item. I traded out my rare quality rings and dps shield for resist gear, and I was able to tank and spank for the most part. I'm an ice witch using a fireball, but I had no problem outlasting her attacks with such high resist against my weak fireball.

I believe all gems get the same xp, regardless of how many gems you have. They also get 10% xp of experience you would get (not taken from how much your character gets) and are NOT subject to diminishing returns of lower enemy monster level.

I'm considering rerolling another class through act 1 to get me an added fire damage gem (can't remember which class gives it as a quest reward for completing act 1) to my feezing pulse skill. I already have added lightning, so this would give my spell and added punch vs cold resistant enemies. My wand is blue blue blue, im gonna reroll it until I get blue-blue-nonblue

Sorry, so if my wand had a red and a blue, and I had only a blue in there, I'd still obviously get to use that skill, but what happens when I also add a red gem ability in there? Do the two work together...? I'm confused heh.

They would work independently, unless one was a support gem.

Was told that energy shield is invaluable and I should have as much as possible. Confirm/Deny?

Only if you plan on taking Chaos Inoculation later on. Otherwise, you'll need some HP to survive chaos attacks which hits your HP directly. From what I've seen, most people add %energy shield and %life in their build if they do not go the CI route, rather than going all out on energy shield.

So it's not pure RNG and I like that. It's still a gamble so it's fun too. Same thing goes for stats as you won't find +30 strength on spell caster gear.

That is just great to know! First off, if they DID allow 30 strength on spell caster gear in PoE, it would STILL be more useful than 30 Strength on a Wizard in D3. That was the dumbest shit ever. Epic helm drops for my wizard, and it's got 150 Str. On a wiz only item. lol

What's an example of a support gem that would go with some of the ice skills?

Depends what kind of build you're going for. The two most common builds are

Frost Pulse Crit /w and w/o CI

Gemming looks something like this...
Frost Pulse
Faster Projectiles (Speeds up the projectile so it actually goes farther too, therefore letting frost pulse hit those pesky ranged mobs)
LMP or GMP (Lesser/Greater Multiple Projectiles) optional, replace with cold penetration if you want
Reduced Mana
Crit Chance
Crit Dmg Multiplier

Ice Spear Double Totem
Ice Spear
Spell Totem
Faster Casting
Crit Dmg Multi
LMP/GMP
Reduced Mana

Both builds would take advantage of double curse, either through talents, or certain awesome uniques which I have yet to find that allow you to have an additional curse on enemies (IF ANYONE HAS THESE KIND OF UNIQUES AND IS WILLING TO TRADE ;))

Frostbite, Elemental Weakness (or whatever the other cold resist reducing curse is, can't remember off the top of my head)

Note that most builds basically pick one ice skill and use it exclusively. You supplement it with your curses which will provide you the MOST damage increase over anything else. Reducing a base mobs resistance to 0 is far more beneficial than say, 5% more crit.

Which of the two builds do you recommend, as the biggest hitter?

Also which skill is the one you'd pick exclusively, any favorites?

You can look up a list of skill gems per quest reward per class. Look for the Poe wiki. Part of the reason I want to reroll a specific class, just to get the specific gem guaranteed by the quest reward. Makes multiboxing more appealing to rush alts for gems

Well, both are great ways to go IMHO.

The double Spell Totem build is much harder to get up and running, as you essentially just leech exp until level 40 or so without really contributing. You also need the right gems for it to be really effective. For example, if you don't have LMP or GMP, it's going to suck horribly.

Also the Double Totem build is a lot of micro managing as you also run triple traps, Bear, Conversion, and Fire trap to keep mobs off you and your totems. There's a huge post by hypershatter on the PoE witch forum, that's where I got the build from. I'm currently attempting the luxury build using EB/IW so it'll be awhile before I truly am able to just steam roll stuff. It's also very problematic in narrow hallways/passages. But on the upside, you freeze mobs like crazy and it's a great party build.

Frost Pulse build is a pretty standard witch build and you potentially do more single target damage if you don't use LMP/GMP since the totem build relies on you able to place your totem so that all teh shards hit the mob/mobs, and that they dont get instapwned by bosses (I'm looking at you 3 bandits, god damn flicker strike). It's more "paper" dps for sure and some can argue, more consistent and not plagued with issues such as narrow hallways/corners. It's probably also a lot cheaper/gear intensive as double spell totem. But you can go the CI route for Double totem and it's relatively cheap and not gear dependent at all.

That doesn't sound fun at all.

I'm currently using Frost Pulse for AOE in front of me, Ice Lance for single target dmg, and frost nova for large groups. I just got to act 2 in Normal. How long will this be viable? I prefer variety.

With good support gems, you'll be fine.

Agreed, so I'm trying an ice/lightning EE build

Not 100% on all of the nodes, but that's the basic plan

So far (lvl 48) it's working out OK, but I am half expecting to have to reroll at some point.

You CAN use other skill gems but most people choose 1 because that's how you can get the most DPS out of it, via 5L/6L armors. Remember, there's socket limits on most items. 1h's 3 max, helm, boots, gloves, 4 max. You'll need other sockets for other support skills like this...

Clarity
Discipline
Reduced Mana
(some other support gem or aura skill you want the mana cost reduced on)

Frost Bite
Increased Duration
Increased Area of Effect
Elemental Weakness

Hell, my double spell totem build I use 3 different traps along with curses and summons. But Ice spear + spell totem is my main ice skill. I just don't have enough links to make another ice skill as strong as my ice spear.

And believe me, once you get into Cruel/Merciless, you're witch will need all the damage she can get. ;)

Crazy build, but nice plan! You gave me a couple ideas--cheers!

Yea it makes sense in a min/max sorta way... I just like having lots of moves for different scenarios. I fully intend to keep winging it on this witch until i get stuck and have to re-roll though.

Nice to know about the max limits on gem slots. I reckon that'll be pretty necessary to have max gem slots come cruel/merciless

There's so many great combinations, it's really great mix/match and still be viable.

I wish there was a better map in the game, that "tab" button diablo 2 throwback map is just fucking awful. It makes me sick to my stomach whenever I have to use it because I can't see the map in the corner very well most of the time.

no doubt!

I did some serious theory crafting while doing my cardio today. The end result is that my Marauder has achieved beast mode. His damage still sucks because I don't have a 5+ linked armor or a good weapon, but he is even more ridiculously tanky than he was before. Breezed through Act 1 Merciless. The only thing holding me back is lack of chaos resist.

went to see what i could buy to make my toon more powerful, nothing. guess its really not a pay-to-win.

This game rewards you for using your brain and thinking of novel ways to combine your skills. Good job. Now when you get your uber weapon and 6 links you'll be super happy.

So is there spell crit and melee crit in this game? or just one over-all crit?

How about elemental damage? does that mean anything like lightening, ice, fire, etc... or is elemental its own thing?

There are all three types. Spell, Melee, and global (affects both spell and melee)
