I need to upgrade my "wife rig" (see my sig) to make it able to play COD: Black Ops 2 on 1080p resolution.

The current PC is a AMD Athlon 64 X2 4600+ with a GeForce 9600GT. The game is barely playable at the moment.

I wanted to know the minimum PC + GPU I have to get to play it at 1080p resolution with the best settings (all but antialiasing at maximum).

You're looking at a new PC. After MW2, the COD games somehow became a bit more CPU heavy than before. As for the GPU, probably the HD 7850 2GB at a minimum if you want max settings.

Try COD:BO2 on your rig and see how well it performs. If it performs well, then that'll give you an idea of what to buy. Also what PSU does your wife's rig have?
 
It performs well on my rig. I just don't put the Anti-Aliasing into max to give it room for breathing.

I'll get a XFX 450W for her, the same I have on my rig. I'll cheap out on the processor to make it affordable. Considerting my brother has a AMD Athlon II 250 + the same GPU I have (Radeon 6870) and is running the game in the same settings I am, the Pentium will be more than enough processing power for her. After all it is better than the Athlon, isn't it?

I'm thinking about building her a rig similar to the one I have, but using a Pentium Dual-Core G630 processor. I wonder about the GPU. I'm on a tiny budget, that's why I want to go as low as possible without sacrificing the graphics.

The HD 6870 is probably the lowest-end card I'd recommend.

However, at least here in the U.S, the HD 6870 is fairly overpriced now since the significantly faster HD 7850 1GB and HD 7850 2GB cards cost the same as the HD 6870. So if that's the case in your country as well, buy the HD 7850, put it in your PC and then give your wife the HD 6870.

Unfortunately that is not the case at all around here. 7870 goes for more than double the price of a 6870.

What's the difference between:

XFX Radeon HD6870 1Gb GDDR5 HD-687A-ZNFC

and

XFX Radeon HD6870 1Gb GDDR5 HD-687A-ZHFC

and

XFX Radeon HD6870 1Gb DDR5 HD-687A-ZDFC

??
 
More than double? Are you sure you're not looking at the 7970 instead of the 7870? I don't see how the 7870 could be more than double the price of the card it replaced. What's the price on the 7970 and 7950 then?
 
The 7870 goes for US$ 500. The 7970 goes for US$ 710. The 6870 goes for US$ 275. In Brazilian currency it's US$ x 2.05 approximately. So... yes, more than double. Weird, isn't it?

Here if you want the latest be prepared to pay insane markups. That's just the way it is.

Back to GPUs... is the 6770 or 6790 enough? A lot cheaper than the 6870.

Ok but I didn't recommend the HD 7870. I recommended the HD 7850. How much does the HD 7850 costs?

No. Both cards are substantially weaker than the HD 6870.

Sorry. The 7850 goes for around US$ 410. The 6870 goes for US$ 275.

Even the 6850?

Problem is, considering the other stuff I'll have to buy (the whole computer, heh) the 6870 stretches it a little past my limit. I can do it, but I have to make sure I'll break my rules for a great reason.

The HD 6850 is 10 to 15% slower than the HD 6870. Think back to your HD 6870 experiences with COD:BO2. Do you think a 10% to 15% will be a noticeable difference to your wife?
 
Well, my wife didn't let me buy her a new PC(!). I had to go the cheap way.

After running some tests on friends' machines, I got her a new processor - an Athlon II 250. Now CoD is playable. My brother has this processor, but uses the same GPU I have (Radeon 6870) and he runs CoD: BO 2 using the same settings I do. Seems that her GPU is the limiting factor.

For now I think I'll save some money and get my wife a new GPU, then save some more for the rest of the PC. Thanks a lot for helping.

Sorry to revive this thread, but I did some changes on my wife's PC:

Now it runs a AMD Athlon II 250 + GeForce 9800GT 1GB + 4GB ram + 1360x768 monitor.

Does the ASUS E35M1-M kit (CPU+MoBo) with AMD E-350 and onboard Radeon 6310 graphics deliver a better gaming experience than what she has right now?
