Planetside 2

I downloaded it and gave it a shot. I just couldn't get into it. Getting into good action areas seemed to take a while. Honestly, I don't have the patience to be running around and crap in a shooter game. I just want to kill stuff.

The combat wasn't bad when I did get into the action. I'd say the majority of my play time was getting to the battles rather than figthing.

I'm sure it's better if you really put some time in and figure everythign out, but I didn't feel like it. They could have made it a little more intuitive.

The game does not really do a good job at explaining this. Instant action areas are generally going to be a good fight. Only time it wont is if the battle is minutes from ending.

Hover over an area and it will show enemy activity. Enemies Detect, Enemies Squads Detect and Enemy Platoons Detected are common. Platoon detected in Red means a ton of enemies there.

Flashing territory means its being contested. Tug of War bar means friendly or enemies are actually changing the ownership of the territory. If the bar is your team and decreasing, that means enemies are "winning". If the bar is the enemy color and decreasing/changes to your team then your team is "winning".

There is some tutorial in the works but is a few months away...should have been done before release. I played the beta so I already knew what to do.

Bought two Walmart cards today. So I should be lined up to get 12000 SC now for $30. That should last me a while!!

I joined a platoon last night that actually worked together and communicated. We didn't win every battle, but it was a blast playing with people who actually talk/chat.

Good thing I don't play medic. :p

its better to get the walmart one any way.

500 bonus points x 3 = 1500 the ns-11 non platinum version is 700 points if you buy it with station cash. so its still a 800 point profit over gamestop cards.

only thing you dont get is the platinum color on the gun.

SOE needs to ban every person who abuses the Proximity chat function without warning, really getting sick of having my game muted because someone wants to be a dick to as many people as possible. The saddest part is that SOE was completely fucking stupid with the way they implemented the voice chat screen, having names being added and removed constantly makes it almost impossible to mute the person you want. Muting doesn't do anything though because while you don't hear what the Spammer is sending, you still have your sounds muted.

I did not think it was possible for a developer to fuck up so many different integral parts of a game.

Planetside 2 has the worst tutorial I've seen in an MMO in just about ever. When I first played it I was lost on everything for about the first few days of play , I can't believe that considering the scope and depth of the game that they wouldn't at least give you some kind of jump start before they just drop you in but instead you are dropped into the thick of it without any warning.

I really, really want to see a [H]ard write-up on what we can do to maximize performance on this game. If that means blowing money on thousand dollar processors, so be it - I just have to know.

You can't really get comparable results with this game is the problem. Going to have a hell of a time to get the data from the same area with the same combat going on is why. I'm sure its doable, but its going to take awhile I'm sure.

Current worse bottleneck is the CPU issue. You really need a one of the Core iX series to really have a enjoyable experience. AMD's Phenom II and FX line ups plus the older Intel Core 2s are seriously lacking in the game. Only way to try and help minimize those issues are to overclock the CPU to the fullest. My PII X6 @ 3.6GHz compared to my 2500K @ stock is playable with my 7950, but the settings are a mix of low/med while my 2500K is all high. GPU usage was around 40% with the PII X6 and my 2500K was more around 70%.

Memory is also a issue with the game. You really need to have 8GB of ram to run this game properly or your system just starts choking. Its a ram hog, so if you have 4GB you will likely run into issues running the game. RAM speed also helps to increase performance. Not jaw dropping, but I got around a 5% to 10% boost in FPS running at 1866MHz vs 1333MHz with my 2500K. Though the increase will be bigger on systems that don't have nearly as much bandwidth. With some people still on DDR2 that is certainly contributing to their performance issues IMO.

Video cards do help boost FPS, but as seen with my PII vs i5 its only going to go so far with older systems. If someone is wanting to upgrade to the latest and greatest to get better FPS don't expect a lot. I will say though to run the game absolute max settings smoothly you will probably need a higher end card equipped with a proper processor.

Hopefully SOE release a performance patch in January to help with the issues. Though they've been promising fixes, since alpha...

Any idea what causes my stuttering issue then? I've got a decent system and get nice FPS but it seems that after playing a while whenever I turn really fast or get in a shootout with someone it stutters terribly at like 1-2FPS even after turning down a handful of settings.

you can mute people on the HUD now with the patch from earlier this week... if someone is talking you can see their name in the bottom left next to the radar and/or your squad list. shows volume slider and a speaker icon, just press ALT real quick and click on it

I ran into that issue during the beta a couple times, however there was a patched that fixed that and I haven't seen it on either of my setups since then.

In terms of what you are experiencing I'm not totally sure of the cause. Is the game installed on your SSD? I know people have experienced some types of lag while this was on a HDD. Have you monitored your vram usage on your 470? I doubt it, but maybe there are vram spikes that your 470 can't handle. Make sure you don't have a bunch of background programs open either when running the game. Maybe obvious, but you never know.

Do you guys find these feature useful? I personally have it muted as I don't want to be bothered by it.

What are some ways to get XP? (without paying).

What are most effective ways to farm? So far for me, it's run AMS + Ammo Sundy as an Engi. Followed by heavy run / gun and medic farming.

Is there anything else?

Tech plants. Amp stations, Biolabs, and some of the smaller but fought over outposts are great areas to battle it out. I been spending most of my time on Esamir. Only one tech plant so always a fight. I also have started to really enjoy light assault. Fly over the walls and flank the enemy. Most of them are focused on what is outside the walls. Easy kills.

I find proximity chat to be useful in some situations - rarely is it ever annoying to me. I like to know when someone calls out something, usually semi-relevant or vice versa it lets me yell at someone to GTFO the way.

my favorite farming thus far is the HE cannon on a lightning with rival combat chassis and some other upgrades that aren't as important. With this gun though - pick a base under heavy attack and go around AMS hunting with it.

Same here. My system should be good enough for this game ? i5-3570K...16GB DDR-3...GTX-680 4GB...Solid State Drive. But PS2 performance is up and down for me.

PS2 at times can play smooth as butter, perfect, but when I turn around quickly, I get super slow downs and chop, for a couple seconds. And in big fire fights, can come to a crawl for several seconds, then bounce back to normal.

I tried lower settings, turning off shadows, etc...still same thing.

I finally got around to playing after the "launch" of the game last night, I played a lot in the beta. Is there an easy way to find good East Coast guilds to join? Running around with pugs is only slightly amusing when I know I am missing out on a better experience.

What server/faction are you? I play on Jaeger as NC and Mattherson as VS and I got into an outfit on each pretty quickly. On the platoon tab I'd look for platoon squads and play for a while and ask to be invited into the outfit. Granted, they were both openly recruiting, but I don't play enough to justify playing for something like the enclave.

Unfortunately I don't have it on my SSD at the moment, it's pretty full of the few games I do keep on it. I may make some room for it though and see if that helps. I also turned down both graphics quality and textures to medium so I doubt it's using a bunch of VRAM. Maybe there is some background stuff interfering. I do tend to let my browser with 20+ tabs open sometimes lol...

I've also heard some people had some success by lowering the render distance in the .ini. By default it's set to 9999999.99 which is apparently the whole map? Not sure if that's really safe to mess with though.

I like VS the most so far and chose Mattherson for that. Fresh brand new toon :p

A render distance of 1500 allows me to see pretty far, only have problems seeing aircraft that are far away. The big problem with render distance is that it is dynamic, so the game cuts down how far enemies render depending on how many enemies are in the area, and it will cut it down to no mare then 10-20 feet render distance.

Speaking from the point of view of a working joe in The Enclave, we don't have any requirements on playtime at all.

For example, I only log two hours or so during the week - most of our guys are the same. Because we have squads running at any given hour of the day, I can get home from work at 3am and find organized action for however long I'm able to sneak in before hitting the bed.

We run organized ops are from 5 to 11 during weekdays (4 platoons usually!) so I usually miss out on those, but they're an absolute blast to be a part of if you get the chance.

I recommend you give us a shot if you play TR on Matherson; there's no one quite like us.

Having said that, do read the bit about having a thick skin - that's the primary reason the 4chan & reddit kids hate us.

I highly suggest putting that on the SSD. Its night and day IMO.

Maybe the browser is doing something, but I doubt it would totally choke the system. If you had 4GB of ram I would say otherwise though.

For rendering its set to -1, which renders the whole map. I would think anything around 1000-1500 is good. Though if you fly in the air a lot you may be at a disadvantage. I have mine set to 1000 right now and get a decent boost in FPS.

And yes if you are a cry baby or highly politically correct do NOT go to The Enclave, you will likely be in tears. I don't agree with a lot of the shit they do, but they are really unmatched in terms of ops and show what a Outfit can do in PS2.

I may sink some money into this....

With the Wally World 15.00 cards you get bonus 500 Station Cash, that's 6k for $15.00

In case anyone hasn't seen this. Perfect time to get those weapons you want!

Alternatively, I have friends that use Sunderers with deploy / ammo and all they do is sit there and end up with somewhere in the ball park of 100-125 certs an hour or more.

Haha yeah the trick is to set one up in a busy area, but out of immediate danger, then just leave it and do something else. I got one setup in the Crown tower last night, so many spawns.

But my highest cert gain rates have come from an anti-infantry high explosive magrider. The mag is generally awesome but when you have a lot of targets during pitched battles it racks up a silly amount of kills.

This reminds me of what happened to me in a magrider last week. I was taking a jaunt through the middle of nowhere to get to a squad beacon and ran into some fun. I crested a rise above a base and say a good 2 dozen TR running around, being the opportunistic fellow I am, I took as many shots as possible and ended up with 8 or 9 kills in less then 15 seconds, this was with the standard gun, I can only imagine what carnage would of been released if I had anti-infantry rounds.

Yeah with the explosive AI you barely have to aim. I pair that up with the Saron AT turret, basically a sniper rifle for taking out tanks and turrets - and infantry too, if you manage to hit them directly. It works out good even with no gunner in the turret seat, just change seats over as required based on target.

If you're planning on spending money on this game the triple SC day is worth it compared to the premium membership if your primary concern is certs to unlock things.

You can get your money's worth (in triple SC equivalence) out of premium membership if you play about 48 hours a week and earn about 1 cert a minute. (Not terribly difficult, but not terribly fun either.) However keep in mind premium also brings in other things:

25-50% increased resource gain, +25-50% increased XP gain, +25-50% increased passive cert point gain, +Priority login, +Early access, +500 Station Cash each month.

You get the 50% increased on the things mentioned above if you get 6 months or more membership at once, and scales back to 25% if you do less than 6 months.

My advice: If you plan on playing for more than 9 months. Buy a 6 month plan, and $35 worth of SC on tripple SC day. Probably won't need to spend another dime on the game.

6 months is $72, if you spend $72 on triple SC day you would get 21,000 SC. If you spend $105 on triple SC, you would end up with 31,500 SC. If you spent $35 on SC and $72 on 6 months, you would get 12,500 SC.

With the above numbers, buying a 6 month pass is not worth it, the passive cert gain is crap and the increased exp/cert gain wont come close to matching they buying power of SC.

You should also save some SC and buy the weekly 50% boost for the bonus experience weekends. I did that the first bonus weekend and was getting over 300xp per kill. I'm pretty sure I got over 500 certs that weekend. It was pretty amazing. The certs are so much more valuable than SC since you cannot buy them, and they actually lead to real (though small) upgrades. But only if you're having fun while obtaining them. :)

Something that helped me was going from USB audio that could only handle 16bit 44khz sound to onboard audio at 24bit 48khz. I remembered that in BF3 your computer's performance running the game would be affected by having to resample the audio(I could be making this up). I did this and now at FPS counter I see an even amount of [CPU] and [GPU], it really did help take the load off my computer's CPU.

This, coupled with setting render distance to 1500 and disabling shadows in user init made a huge difference.

Now the game is mostly GPU bound.

you need to use the cards that day to get the triple SC. but you don't have to spend the SC that day

Where do you increase the draw distance? Was playing tonight in the liberator and enemies were not being drawn until I was within 150m and by then your down from AA
