Julie Larson-Green is the new head of Microsoft's Windows division. Most of you will remember her from the Surface launch event a couple weeks ago.

In the shakeup, announced this evening, Microsoft said Larson-Green will be promoted to lead all Windows software and hardware engineering. Tami Reller will continue on as chief financial officer and chief marketing officer and will assume responsibility for the business of Windows. Both executives will report directly to Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer, according to Microsoft's press release.

So is she responsible for the retardedness that is Metro or will she be responsible for fixing the retarded decision to implement Metro?

Inquiring minds want to know.

Really? That's how you want to start the thread off?

Can we not have a single W8 related thread where it doesn't devolve into "W8 doesn't suck," and "W8 is the worst thing evar!!!"?

Did I say anything about Win8? No. I said Metro - the UI. I'm all for the core OS enhancements that they made to Win8. As far as the halfassed bastardized is-it or isn't-it user interface... that's what I'm asking about.

Whether or not she is to blame for Metro, she IS to blame for the ribbon interface, and therefore to me can do nothing good for the company at the helm.

Also, lol @ women in technology field, yes I'm sexist.

Probably not. People either love Metro or they hate it.

Nope sorry, Windows 8 sucks a bag of dicks.

I had been of the opinion that windows 8 was kind of stupid to not have simple wizard to choose tablet or desktop mode, but otherwise was willing to give it a chance and didn't think it was a big deal because it was going to be vista V2 and not heavily adopted.

Now that I have to support people buying window 8 laptops connecting to our web based applications, I think windows 8 is a flaming car wreck. Damn near everything that uses AJAX UI elements to look like an actual application through the browser is severely broken in any browser under W8. That's pretty bad. There's also a bunch of issues with outlook 2010 and 2013 pre-release that are unprecedented for version updates and incompatibility regarding updates for the windows platform since I have been working in IT (about 16 years). If you are stuck with an IT environment that is embracing BYO policies, it's going ot be a rough ride.

A lot of female chiefs these days. I'm cool with that. Too bad most CS university programs are still 98% male. Ugly male at that.

Is this a Promotion?

Seems to me it's more like having your TV Series moved to the Friday night 10pm slot.

Dear Julie,

Kill Metro as the default interface. Both you and I know Windows 8 RT is stillborn. Let the relatively few percentage of people who buy a Win8 touch screen system have the option of switching on Metro. Everyone else does not need it.

Thank you,
pxc

I'm sure that's what Windows 8 is. It's Windows 7 without a start button. I'm glad I heard it here first.

I was at the Microsoft Store this weekend looking at Windows 8 and I learned something. You can bring up the traditional desktop at any time; task bar, system tray, Windows 'start' button in the lower left...the whole smash.

I asked the sales person, "Why isn't Microsoft telling people this?!"

...maybe it was the desktop sans start button. I may have mistaken the Explorer logo for it at glance.

Never mind.

Nope.

She sounds like a very capable woman to take the reigns. I'm very interested in what those two can come up with. One for the technical stuff, the other for the business stuff. I'd like to see some of Microsoft Research stuff come into the Windows platform.

Amen brother. I've been forced to support a few customers on Windows 8 and the level of hatred I feel for the OS is second only to Windows Me. I have actually been recommending Macs and IPads to some folks. I just don't understand how MS can shove this shit like this without thinking about how people use their computers.

A tablet OS on a desktop is stupid.

It's called a on topic opinion of a horrible OS at the moment. Get used to it ;)

We need more female chiefs that look like this.

You wanna work for someone wearing glitter stickers on their face and hand? I dunno if I could take anyone seriously who showed up for work dressed like the back of an iPad.

if she looked like that, id do anything she told me.

Shoulda know that a woman would be involved with such a shitty product.

Makes sense.

It makes perfect sense now! I was wracking my brain trying to figure out how they could fuck up Windows this bad and why it looked so terrible. It was designed by a woman...Of Course! to match the drapes and wallpaper!

I am at ease now. I finally figured it out.

im pretty sure everyone on this forum knows who seven of nine is, even skribble. :p

SKRIBBEL! :p

Of course I do, but regardless of her having a light sword or whatever she looks like an extra glittery iPad.

I was at Best Buy over the weekend looking at HDTV's before I buy them online. I stopped over at the PC section and watched person after person fumble with Windows 8 and not being able to do anything. I just smiled to myself. As I was walking away, some guy comes up to me, an employee and says "we don't even have to lock the computer down, no one can figure out how to navigate off the first screen" We both laughed.

So instead of the sales guy doing his work and assisting customers, he was being smug and lazy. And Best Buy is wondering why their company is going down the crapper.

Assisting them with what? Wasn't Windows 8 supposed to be so eeeaaaasy to use?

I have ended up swapping all of my PCs to win8 after using it for a while.

I really like metro, and find it much faster to interact with than the start button, once I figured it out.
