Microsoft has announced its new Xbox Smartglass that allows interaction between the Xbox and PCs, Android devices and iPhone / iPads, so I wanted to post this video so you guys could comment on it. What do you think?

It's alright, I guess. I don't really see much use for it in "gameplay", but I'm all for better integration between the Xbox 360 and the PC.

This doesn't seem to have much point to it, or features that you couldn't do with the damned controller. Plus is another "distraction" from you know, actually making games for it. :p

do not want more so if you NEED a windows 8 based any thing to use it
more like FAIL Glass

the gaming world does not want touch and motion controls

Technologically speaking it is pretty cool. Not sure it has any actual value to me personally though. I would be happy if the next console generation would come with wifi cards that can be upgraded. That would allow me to stream 1080p wirelessly instead of having to run cable.

I can appreciate the product for what it does, but I would not care to use it. I don't like Blu-Ray style "extra features" and I really dislike the title. Just let me watch a show without text distractions. Maybe if I used it for a while I'd change my POV, but for today, I don't care for it.

Do you understand the words coming out of your mouth? cause I sure didn't hehe ;)

I think this is one of those things that needs to be tried before people will accept it. I see it being very big because you do not have to have buy another controller to use this with. Just a Tablet or Smartphone.
Nintendo is going to lose big on this one as I see it aimed directly at them.

So instead of a $50 controller, you have to buy a phone/tablet twice the cost of the actual console? :p

Why is it so many companies think that people want to mess around with a phone/tablet while their watching movies, tv shows, or playing games? The phone interface to control the web browser on the TV is nice, but beyond that it's pointless.

Nintendo can't (won't) even play a DVD on their current Wii - ! That I can't understand!

...What? It's supposed to work on phones and tablets using Android or iOS as well. They never said anything about requiring Windows 8.

I don't see Nintendo really losing that much, since their tablet device is a part of the main controller, not some other thing you put down while you actually play.

And the Wii U looks to have better integration, with the controller screen taking over as the main screen if someone else wants to watch TV or something. Which will likely happen a lot, since there's not a lot of great games yet announced on it.

Why would I want to read info about a movie's cast while I'm watching the movie? I'd either have to pause the movie or miss part of it.

Use a wireless bridge to connect the cable connection to your upgraded wireless network.

I usually have Formula 1 timing open on my phone while watching a race, this is similar to that.

I could see this being used for Fantasy Football as well.

Actually, I can think of a bunch of great uses. Not what they demoed exactly, but I already use my Samsung while watching TV in some ways.

Read that as Microsoft Smartass at first glance

Personally, for those of us that see the Wii U as yet another gimmick from nintendo, using devices I already own is nice for a change. I do think it will be pretty much useless for games as it is not a "required" device but that doesn't mean the technology doesn't mean games won't support it as an extra. I think it'll turn out like the kinect, where games will have support it and it will be "better with smartglass." I like the technology but I don't see any game developers swooning it anytime soon.

What about being able to watch a replay on your tablet during a live sporting event without pausing the actual event?

Multiplayer games that work well with touch that could be shared on one TV. (Like Draw Something type things... bad example, but you know what I mean.)

Use a wireless bridge to connect the cable connection to your upgraded wireless network.

Even with wireless-n I have issues on high bitrate 1080p though :(. Dual band may fair better.

Ended up just running wired to my wireless bridge by the TV downstairs then having two APs. One for upstairs and one for down. Devices seamlessly switch to whichever is closest and it actually worked out really nice...

I have to hear more about it but so far it seems... not needed. Why would I want to burn my battery controlling my xbox instead of using, the controller.

I've tried the integration app on the windows 8 preview (have to install the final one later) and it was... okay but not much to it, I could not tell why I'd want to use it.

Now if I had a captive display, say something on display or where I had kids and only wanted them to view certain things then yeah, but there was no feed back so I couldn't see what they were seeing but I could control it somewhat.

more pointless bs to beat other competitors to the market, they dont give a fuk about gamers anymore.

e3 was terrible this year.
no new hardware, nothing interesting from valve, just more kinect crap and quicktime events.

Agreed, really disappointed with this years E3. A couple new IPs and some nice looking sequels but that's about it.

Oh the Star Wars game running on high end PC hardware looks sweet!

Seems like Windows 8 is geared for consumers not business markets. Its going to be more bs I will have to disable. Its sad Microsoft is a wannabe apple now.

I think it's good. If they are going for the trend of "TABLETS! OMG EVERYONE! TABLETS!" Then I am happy Microsoft isn't going to make me buy a new tablet if I want to try it out. Also, because it's an app and not required hardware, it'll probably be minimal in developer integration, which means I can ignore it. I hate the idea of Tablet/Touchscreen/Screen in Controller integration. It sucked on the dreamcast. It sucked on Nintendo handhelds. It sucks on the Vita. It should just go away. But at least with Smart Glass I don't have to buy a whole new device if I want to try it out.

I think it is bullshit that my device is not supported on the system. Can anyone help me out?

I'm actually really excited for this... I already use my phone to control my tv, this brings it up to the next level.

Plus the additional gameplay features like maps and inventory mean more seemless gameplay without stopping to open menu's.

I love the WiiU for it, and I hope the smart glass works just as well.

This would be perfect for the seemingly growing population of ADD afflicted people. If I'm watching a movie or TV show I'm not interested in factoids about the action unless the show sucks so bad that I'm bored with it. If that's the case I'm sure as hell not going to give a damn about the backstory.

A resounding "meh" from me.

Could be decent for some specialized use but for general gaming it seems like a useless gimmick.

I imagine Microsoft just implemented a HTML5 server in the XBox code for project glass. Pretty cheap, easy and inexpensive way for them to offer alternatives to the WiiU second screen. It provides more options too which is a good thing.

I can see uses for this technology. Like your on recon mission, and you get live video feeds of HW on your pad telling you about your progress, as well as a real time map. This is much better then mapping it into a corner of a screen somewhere. It's much more realistic.

Using things like NetFlix, Pandora. "Tap and Take" where you can tap stop on the pad's player that's streaming through the XBox, and then take it with you and it picks up where you left off, operating off 3G/4G. That will save a lot of bandwidth.

It's also a win for Microsoft. They don't have to support proprietary controllers/pads with a second CPU/GPU. HTML5 is a standard that will force game developers instead of Microsoft to test on various platform (WP 7, Android, iOS) .

And by streaming a lot of content through your xbox, Microsoft gets a ton of information about your viewing/listening/shopping habits.

It's gimicky in alot of ways, and I agree with earlier posters that I don't really see much of a need in gaming, but it has some interesting implications for entertainment.

I already use my xbox mostly as a media hub. I really can't stand many console games that I can play in PC instead. So we use the xbox for renting movies, or for Netflix, etc. Adding a decent browser, if it actually works well with the necessary plugins for most things, just makes it that much easier for me to consolidate a few devices I have connected to the TV, like the HTPC which is a bit of a pain in the rear to put together and maintain.

I can see how this would be good for those who don't want to think much about connecting devices for home entertainment, but don't want to invest into the Apple world to get that interoperability.

Wow. Of all the things about the xbox that could be made better...They made this? I suspect this will come to market with a thud. Who wants to spend money on movie commentary on an additional screen? Seems like things should be moving towards everything being apart of ONE SINGLE system, rather than parting out random crap that no one wants to buy. E3 was terrible this year.

Edit: Sorry for the double post.

Add to this, scrolling through screens will be so much simpler when you can just swipe your tablet.

As a media center this has great potentials.

Question about the Xbox 360 for anyone who can answer it: The output capability is 720p, is it? If I made a 1080p MKV, can the Xbox 360 play it back on the television?

My understanding is the xbox 360 and ps3 both fully support 1080 i and p resolution. So no issues with 360 playing back 1080p video (after all they did make a HDDVD player for it). Games for the most part use 720p or little under that res because the hardware isnt good enough to run awesome graphics and special effects at 1080 unless they make it really simple. Thus why xbox arcade games typically can run at 1080 and retail dont.

Depends. I use Tversity as a media streaming server and it can convert nearly anything I put into the designated folder, within reason. As long as you have the Xbox connected to the HDTV, I can't see any reason it couldn't play it back in full 1080p resolution.
