Any old school BF42 players here?
If you are like me, you are probably tired of waiting for a BF3 engine port of 42, and are sickened to realize that BF1943 for PC was kicked to the curb so the devs could focus on BF3.

With that said,
Is anyone interested in some old school BF42 PUGs?

This was the greatest game EVER in my opinion. I remember downloading the demo to try it out and played through a few upgraded computers. I remember BFSTATS.COM which was started by a few guys in my CLAN, and BFJAMZ.COM.

Anyone?
Ahh.. good times.

I wont argue that. In fact, there were ton's of mods from 42. Hell, it was on par with Half-life!
let me list my favs. :)

DC - Pre BF2
Action BF - NUKES!!!
Interstate 82 - DISCO!!!
Pirates - ARG!
EOD- Pre BFV
FH
Galactic Conquest - Use the force!

I tried to get back into BF2 but I was taken back by how dated the graphics were. Right now I'm playing DH and RO1 for my WWII needs, and 1.6 because it still going strong.

Tempting. 1942 was so much fun. However, RO2 and FH2 (for BF2) fill my MP WW2 FPS needs for now.

Man, I played the shit out of FH back in the day. Even BF1942 and DC I used to host in my classroom for some quick lunchtime mayhem.

Desert combat is basically the inspiration for battlefield 2/3 and any modern combat game right now. I started playing around 0.3 i think. The mod sold more copies of the game than the game itself. Wich is why i dont understand game maker to lock out any modability out of their game... maybe they get ''jealous''?

interstate 82 was sooo awesome , but development stopped when it got popular.

Pirates was GREAT... loved that crazy mod! hot air balloon fight ftw!

Eve of destruction , very well done mod... but the SVD machine gun was better than a sniper rifle on long distance shot .Maps were awesome and varied.

Galactic conquest was good too. A little buggy , but fun. Not my favorite , but flying a tie fighter is always satisfying.

Lets not forget , the most polished , complete mod. Forgotten hope. I didnt played it much , but lets face it ,it was one of the best one around.

seriously , bf1942 showed the world how moddable a game could be. Yes HL did it before , but 1942 really got it mainstream. 1942 was (for me) the golden age of online multiplayer gaming.

I almost forgot about this, it was way ahead of its time aesthetically and gameplay-wise considering BF:V came out during it's mainstay.

I would love to play BF1942 to be updated with the BF3 engine. I'd love to fire up some BF1942, but lost all my copies. I had all the expansions and also played desert combat. I tried BF1943 on the PS3, but thought it was awful.

Give me a exact 1-1 copy of BF1942 in the BF3 engine and I would cry. Allow mod support again and I would die. Never gonna happen though.

Think how different the gaming world would be without mods. Team Fortress, Counter-Strike, Desert Combat, DOTA, MineCraft. Developers get it, publishers don't.

I miss BF1942 with the big maps and the naval battles and carriers with dogfighting and torpedo runs. And the bomber runs in El Alamein....good times. I miss the original. I remember playing most of those mods, especially Pirates.

Because why would they allow user-made content for free when they can charge $15 for each small DLC?

The more absolute control they have over the content, the more they can nickel and dime the user to death.

For BF3 they actually gave the excuse that it was "too complex" to allow modding, but you'd have to be a moron to believe that was the real reason.

BF3 is too complex to allow modding. Can you imagine how complex of a problem it would be for their PR department to handle justifying $15 for a map pack, when dozens of high quality maps were being released for free by a modding community?

Exactly. :p

Agreed. BF1942 was my first game I bought to take advantage of my new system and getting cable internet for the first time. 64 players, that was unheard of back then. And the game play was just....I really loved that game, and the mods were some of the best. Counter Strike started as a mod, and now it's still one of the most played games today. Desert Combat was the alpha version of Battlefield 2 and 3.

Now, we rarely see mods. All of the thinking outside of the box is taking place in the indie houses, while the AAA studios continue to make shit after shit. With a few exceptions of course. 1999-2005 were the PC gaming glory years.

Battlefield 1942 was the first game to get explosions "right". IMO

Miss that game dearly...

BF2 is what hooked me. When 1942 came out was a CS junkie. Thought it was too kiddish after trying demo.

My personal favorite multi player shooter ever...Thats right, it bested quake 3.

Anybody remember the epic naval battles on Midway? Or all the stunts you could pull like wing-surfing and ex-pack jumping? What about the fact that it required REAL TEAMWORK to mark and call in an artillery strike, not some jackoff commander spamming the artillery button?

Hard to believe that game will be ten years old this September. I still own the game and both expansions, along with DC Final 0.8.

I made one of my clan members memorize the clouds on maps so he could reign death with artillery. He hated me so much and it was worth 20-30 kills a game.

I'm guessing because the community would probably remake all the past largescale BF2 maps and most people would not purchase their donkeyshit DLC mini maps. I mean why would anyone pay $15 for Metro 2.0 and Metro 3.0 DLC when we could potentially have these for free, and you know people would make it if they were given the ability...:

  • Dalian Plant
  • Daqing Oilfields
  • Dragon Valley
  • FuShe Pass
  • Gulf of Oman
  • Highway Tampa
  • Kubra Dam
  • Mashtuur City
  • Operation Blue Pearl
  • Operation Clean Sweep
  • Road to Jalalabad
  • Sharqi Peninsula
  • Songhua Stalemate
  • Strike at Karkand
  • Wake Island 2007
  • Zatar Wetlands
  • Devil's Perch
  • Ghost Town
  • Iron Gator
  • Leviathan
  • Mass Destruction
  • Night Flight
  • Surge
  • Warlord
  • Great Wall
  • Operation Smoke Screen
  • Taraba Quarry
  • Midnight Sun
  • Operation Harvest
  • Operation Road Rage

....soooo yeah no mod tools, or atleast not until this game/engine ~> BF2143 has been milked to death by EA...even if they were going to release a SDK I'm sure it wouldn't come free.

I would kill to get back to BF like it was in '42. Maybe one day.

Problem is newer gamers today need almost instant gratification or positive reinforcement they are doing a good job. "Oh you got 5 kills here is an attachment....good job Billy. Hey great job camping with a tank rather than cap'n points. You lost but here is an unlock....yay teamwork!"

Miss the days of just clowning around on servers and loading jeeps with ex-packs or throwing mines like Frisbee's in front of tanks. Just good clean simple fun.

When is the last time you wing walked?

Pffttt, I cap with tanks.

1942 was revolutionary for its time. it was the best demo ever made. the first year that game was out it was a blast.

RMP and Cr4ckm0nk3y in the same thread? What has this world come to...

Anyhoo, ex-packs on Jeep kamikaze is classic. But, my favorite is 'Zooks and Knives' matches. Never had so much fun zook'n or knife'n someone. 'Zooks and Knives - Zero Gravity' is even funnier. And I do miss all the mods the community put together. Just continuous fun from the same game. Best $50 I ever spent. Wait...I bought the expansions, add-on's, 2, 2143, BC2, 3....Geez, guess I'm a Battlefield-junkie hoping for a first-time high like the original.

If they don't remake BF42 on the BF3 engine, they should at least make the original Play4Free online. It would dominate other Play4Free games like LoL.

i actually installed BF1942 last week for the first time in about 6 or so years, there are still people playing it, but i am rusty as hell playing it, plus i need to get a joystick now that works in windows 7.

i need to get desert combat running as i really loved that mod.

I found BF1942 in the bargain bin at Target the other day. Does this have a single player campaign?

No campaign.. Single player is same as mulitplayer, bots only.

Whats up Azn and Monkey!! HPSF baby. :)

If they do remake 42, don't overexaggerate the old maps. Just same buildings, no additional structures, maybe more details and make them destructable would be how I would want it.

For example, not a big fan of the remake of Wake Island on BF3...

I would love to play BF1942 to be updated with the BF3 engine.

If there was an actual color palette and no blue haze I'd love it, too, lol.

I know my earlier years of PC gaming would not have been the same without having the shit scared out of me in Team Fortress. Turning into a room just to have rockets fly out from the darkness made me jump on plenty of occasions, especially down in the flag area on 2fort. Dungeon-like, I tell you!
