Download Windows 8 Consumer Preview

Ok guys, I don't feel like fighting the obvious MS schills in this thread anymore. Complaining just means your a troll no matter how justified your issue is. I was actually going to give this a shot at home after we decided this is a no go at work, but the MS lackey's here have changed my mind. Good luck with your Phone OS girls...

And you're complaining about shills? Really, I've never seen a phone OS run Visual Studio or Office 2010. Of PC games from Steam.

Going to check this out. I already have a VM setup with all the proper settings so I should be able to just format and reinstall this version. I still never got around to switching to windows 7 so maybe by the time I finally decide to upgrade, this will be out and on it's first service pack and I *might* give it a chance.

Providing good information means you're a Microsoft shill? lol okay. Nobody here is saying you absolutely have to like Windows 8. The point I (and I guess heatlesssun) am trying to make is Windows 8 is different, will take getting used to, but right now everyone is providing knee jerk reactions. It is't so bad after you give it a fair shake.

And let's just be honest here. A BUNCH of people complaining had their minds made up about Windows 8 before they ever sat in front of a keyboard.

Out of every Windows OS, I think we can all agree that before Windows 7, absolutely none of them were any good out of the gate. Everything needed at least 1 SP or more to get to a functional state that a business would consider upgrading. I think microsoft is taking a step back if they expect people to switch from 7 to 8 unless it is great out of the box. From what I can see, I think they have another Vista on their hands. Lots of new features that we the consumer are going to beta test until SP1.

You did not use WinXP X64 did you. SP1 broke the memory management to the point that it had to be restarted every day. Prior to SP1 I did not need to restart it at all.

Anyone know if they are going to support xbox 360 games on windows 8?I heard through the grapevine that this would be a feature.

I doubt you'll see published games on the PC (things like Halo 4, etc.) but the indie game may. Its something that was spoken of around the time Windows Phone 7 came out.

This is probably a stupid question, but can you run programs from a Win 7 drive/partition while in Win 8?

Probably, I install all my programs to a storage drive and they work fine after each format. As long as there are no registry entries for that program I would assume you would be fine.

The start button is gone? Thank freaking god. That archaic useless item was good 17 years ago when it was introduced. Today it is completely worthless except for chumps who are stuck in the 90's. Do you still rock a mullet and listen to Billy Ray Cyrus?

I have to admit about the only thing I ever use the start button for in Win7 is for search (it's way faster typing the name of a program/control panel setting/etc than manually navigating through the start menu.

The Metro GUI in general still doesn't make sense for a mouse though. It seems like it's great for tablets though, where you have a lot less precision than a mouse.

Ok, I have been using this on a Latitude 13 all morning. Core 2 solo 1.4Ghz, 4GB RAM. Overall the laptop is far more responsive on Win8.

Gotta say, once you spend the 1 hour poking around, it is not at all that bad. The metro UI is way better than the start menu once you start understanding how it works. The CTRL+TAB in metro is great, kinda like a main app drawer. It is pretty easy to use if you keep an open mind. The whole experience is very quick and snappy.

I spend most of my time on the old school dtop, but that may change... who knows.

The Metro IE10 is a bit buggy, but I am using it solely as an exchange mail client, it is work pretty well doing that. Can't seem to get any tabs to work. I can see them, but they glitch in and out. I am sending tweets and bus reports to MS, almost all of them are on Metro IE10. lol

Overall, a good step forward for Windows.

I will concede that I have not used WinXPx64 very much at all. XP was release in 2001, x64 for x86 in 2003, and was based on server 2003. It wasn't a very mainstream OS in my opinion, but I know a lot of guys really liked it. For the purposes of my argument, I don't think you can include it in the initial windows releases.

That is all I use it for anymore. Mostly bringing up a CMD.

Probably a video driver problem, seems to be working well for me.

Seriously, explain to me why you think I'm trolling? Have I said something to you before?
It's not so much that you said something to me specifically, it's the comments you're making in general that have me wondering. I was going to leave the comments about the UI changes and the "major" changes users would have to endure alone, but then you started on memory management and 'round here, that's been beat to death and back so I started to wonder. No biggie, just thought I'd ask.

I'm hopping on board the "not bad" train

so far every qualm i've had with it was because i wasn't sure how to do what i want'ed to do.
since learning how i want to do things, it's, dare i say, better in some cases than windows 7 is.

so far my favorite things are the new search, task manager, and explorer windows

Didn't think about that one.

Perhaps, I'm not having any problems with tabs on two machines thus far with IE 10 Metro, not used it extensively thus far however. The only thing I'm seeing though are driver problems with my USB modem, a couple of Metro apps had to be restarted but then worked.

Yeah no dice for me. Display driver is already gtg.

Looks like total shite but i will install it in a VM at the weekend and have a look.

FYI...AMD has some new preview video drivers and a cap file out for Win 8 now. To lazy to post link! :)

So far I'm loving it! Yeah it took me an hour to figure out I didn't have to go to task manager to close an app, all you do is grab at the top of the screen and brag it to the bottom. You can also go to the upper left corner of the screen for a list of running apps and right click to close them from there also. Took another hour to figure out how to delete a city from the weather app, had to make my city the default then go to the city I wanted to delete and right click, then the delete button showed up. It wont let you delete the default location. Also when you go to the desktop right click on where the start button used to be! Direct access to all kinds of useful locations! I love it and its getting better as I learn more stuff.

For everyone complaining about the UI how it's made for touchscreen....this explains it pretty well how to use the kb/mouse:

Here's a list of new features in the CP versus the DP:

Haven't used the CP yet, I'll do it tomorrow. But i'll actually RTFM so i'll know what I'm doing unlike half the people in here crying about how it's all different and they can't figure anything out.....well no shit it's a brand new OS with a brand new interface.....forget what you think you know about the Windows OS....this is the new shit!

This kind of attitude is what always makes me laugh and at the same time pisses me off.

I hope for other the sake of people everywhere you are not in the IT field, and are relegated to flipping burgers.

First version of windows I used was 3.1 and I thought it was ok but not as good as the Amiga OS I was coming from, I was a gamer and HAD to play Wing Commander 3! Any way I've used every version of windows since then and the only one I disliked was ME, hell I talked my boss into letting me leave work early the day Windows 95 was released so I could run to Walmart and get it, I had been running the BETA of 95 and was still excited about it, I have that same feeling about Windows 8. Don't want to upgrade, thats great but in another 10 years sit someone down in front of Windows XP, it would be like sitting someone who has only used XP in front of Windows 3.1 they won't know what to do. Things change, change with it or get stuck in the past.

Sorry that's Alt-Tab and Windows-Tab, Ctrl-Tab brings up a screen of installed programs, like a mega quick launch tab.

Ok. Get off your fucking pedestal all mighty great one.

Your attitude is what really pisses me off about the IT field.

Next comes the MS app store..... Finally there's no escape from being locked to a platform!

I've been able to avoid that fate for years (I still have the dumbest cell phone on the planet) but it appears that every platform is now designed to the app store idea.

I guess I'll start developing for WP7 too as those apps will probably be easy enough to port over to W8; it'll be nice to get back to C# after being stuck in java for android.

I don't know what all the fuss is about, I just installed it on a POS Samsung n300 netbook with no problems. The interface is different but I was able to find the control panel (which looks just like Win7) with little problem, and I'm an idiot. :\

All the nerds defending windows 8 don't have a clue about the IT field. IT directors of enterprise environments aren't going to touch Windows 8 with a 10 foot pole. When you have 20,000 employees to support that is 20,000 people you have to teach to use windows 8. "oh they will figure it out" DOES NOT WORK IN THE ENTERPRISE.
You are looking at $500 per seat for 1st day training and support. Microsoft's cheap land grab attempt on getting customers hooked up to windows marketplace is a spectacular exercise in failure.
