7970 "preview"

A 25% improvement over GTX580 for <$400 would be great to me, especially when you look at where the 6970 currently stands.

However, we are shrinking two process nodes and receiving the first brand new architecture since the R600. Remember, we were supposed to go from 40nm > 32nm > 28nm, Cayman had to be cut down due to TSMC canceling the 32nm process. I'll take a 25% improvement over the 580, but I'm sure hoping we get some more. :)

Frankly, both of them have had foul-ups but I think blaming AMD more than Nvidia in that regard is nonsense.

I'm not really going by much other than what I've seen of game performance reviews on [H], they've CLEARLY had more issues with AMD drivers than nVidia's in the latest wave of games. If the 7970 is a 30% bump over the 580, awesome, I could see myself buying one to replace my GTX 480 in my backup rig, not likely to replace my 3 580s with 3 7970s simply because 30% isn't enough to justify the cost for me plus I'm invested in 3D.

I think the 25% faster than GTX 580 will be in older DX 9 games at resolutions below 2560x1600. In DX 11 games and at eyefinity resolutions I believe these figures located here may be more what we'll see and that has me excited

http://www.fudzilla.com/graphics/item/25278-hd-7970-up-to-60-percent-faster-than-gtx-580

The big question for me is will the 7950 unlock to all 2048 shaders and give me these #s and beyond much like my 6950s did for me with 6970 and beyond performance. If so I'll be a happy camper with 2 7950s :)

Well 30% is an average, but I wouldn't take an AMD or nVidia slide that seriously depending on the card of course. As for unlocking, I would think that AMD will have done something about that simply because this 7970 is pricey and I'm sure they love to sell those rather than the 7950. I guess we know about that until next year.

Ya, I agree. I beleive the delay was specifically to laser block the extra shaders. Although I could afford to buy 2 7950s I currently can't afford to buy 2 7970s so it depends on circumstances as to whether I'll be geting southern islands or not.

My gut tells me they wont be unlockable. My heart hopes they could :)

I think people shouldn't get so hung up on slides. With the way these slides represent reality, it's far better to just wait patiently until the product comes out and the reviews are in. I don't trust slides at all anymore

I don't see how a 25% performance improvement over the GTX 580 is disappointing. In fact, I don't see how it's anything less than stellar.

For comparison, the 6970 was slower than the GTX 480, and the 5870 was about 25% faster than the GTX 280, yet it was praised as an incredible card.

If AMD can beat Nvidia's top card and offer a lower price, that's incredible.

Completely agree. We'll have most of our answers shortly, hopefully in about 4 hours.:)

If it averages around 25% over a 580 then I will consider it. I've never bought a top of the line videocard before.

And I believe that 40nm and 28nm are both half nodes so wouldn't it be a full node jump (instead of two)?

LOL this write up seems like total assumption that the writer has taken with crap collected from all over the internet. Really? So now we are caring about dx9 games, and now we shouldn't care about tessellation when nvidia bragged about it all day long? So 25%-40% faster on average at stock clocks is not fast enough? Not that he has any proof.

Lets say this is all true, even than this is the most biased and misinformative article I have ever seen. It almost seems like the writer is mad for not having the card. Lets collect all the information we can find online and make every assumption we can.

I love nvidia cards and most of my systems have had nvidia with few being ati. I really don't care if it is only 30% faster and priced 100 less, I will take it anyday. Short lived? So which card is not short lived? 6-8 months seems like a normal span in which the manufacturers seem to have a refreshed card.

I mean I am all for nvidia and ati competing, but this article is like shooting a target in the dark and hoping you hit it.

Can we just wait to shoot this thing until we have read an article from some reputable site and with card in hand, such as [H].

You people are dreaming if you think it'll be <$400 AND 30% faster than a GTX580.

There's no reason for AMD to price it below the GTX580 if it's that much faster. $499-$549 seems likely.

Yeah, if Kepler is months away especially of course AMD is going to milk it for what they can, god knows they need it.

Between console port software and the much too frequent jumps in speeds nowadays, this is to be expected imo. There is always a point where we reach our peak with gpu's.

This is disappointing nonetheless.

Jumps on single gpu cards need to be more nowadays with the mainstream acceptance of SLI and Crossfire.

So much hype on 28NM gpu. Don't know what to believe. Feel like I'm running out of air. Looking forward to [H]ard|OCP review. If price is right and review is good I might get one soon.

AND stock is going to go up if the price and performance of HD7xxx cards is right.

This will be a huge WIN for AMD if they can do it.

It all depends on who long behind Kepler and how much better if any it is and and it'll also depend on supply. I bet this card is going to be in VERY limited supply. But if AMD can produce the supply and its got the performance then they have a winner.

I just hope it truly delivers. I've only started to really get into pc gaming recently (mostly a console gamer), and I feel the same way. The introduction of a new card is like a new console launch, in a way. Heehee.

exactly! new cards bring the promise of one very exciting thing for me: being able to play games i didn't want to before, because my current hardware would cripple the experience.

Something tells me that Kepler is gong to be pretty amazing.

I know what that "something" is
It's the fact you've invested over $1,500 in nVidia :p

Some games on that list is CPU bound, ie. F1 2011.

Other games are seriously NV biased, LP2, Crysis 2 etc.

Wait for [H] and other sites

If amd can sell it at a profit for around $400 then I think they should,It would force nvidia to drop prices and cut into their profits or keep prices the same and allow amd to sell more cards and take market share from them, because If I was amd I would want my name in every house I could get.
