NEC EX231Wp thread

hmm....

there are almost no experience reports of this monitor yet - did anybody here buy the NEC EX231Wp already?

To sum things up

+Excellent Colors in the sRGB Mode
+Excellent Contrast
+Excellent Ergonomics
+Low Input Lag (ignore TFT centrals inaccurate lag numbers)
+/-Viewing Angles (?) Looks like Simon copy+pasted what he wrote about the F2380.....
-VA Gamma Shift
-Response Time (same as the F2380)

i'm not sure thats entirely right NCX but close.

+ Low Input Lag (ignore TFT centrals inaccurate lag numbers) - ive seen you reference this before and believe you're referring to the use of a single stopwatch as opposed to SMTT to measure? even if that is the case the different will be a few ms, nothing massive so it's wrong to dismiss it entirely. Their U2412M tests for instance were very close to the Prad.de measurements with an oscilloscope and other reviews i've seen using SMTT so it's close anyway.

+/-Viewing Angles (?) Looks like Simon copy+pasted what he wrote about the F2380..... - parts are the same by the look of it given they are both cPVA, but then there's a lot of comparisons in there against the F2380 saying worse viewing angles with more gamma / contrast shift, but better off-centre VA gamma shift

-Response Time (same as the F2380) - the F2380 was a bit faster actually: "The Samsung F2380 used a slightly older cPVA panel but did have an RTC impulse applied to boost responsiveness. It wasn't super fast, but there is a marked improvement compared with this non-overdrive NEC model."

You can tell by the viewing angle shots that this panel has much higher colour shift than the original C-PVA panel. How regrettable.

TFT Central's lag measurements are always way off base compared to the real numbers measured by PRAD. Some are closer than others, but just look at something like the BenQ EW2420 @21.3ms while prad gets 2ms.

The viewing angle part is exactly what I said, it looks like: Simon Copy+pasted most of the F2380 part. Not until the second last sentence is the NEC talked about.

Multiple pictures of the response time must be taken and the best representation must be picked to match up with what the reviewer sees on screen.

It is also important to note that using the F2380/F2380MX's Fastest setting actually makes the response time worse in practice, but not in PixerPixAn. This is probably why Samsung did not bother to add an overdrive function in the NEC because the Fastest settings only makes things worse. PRAD also mentions this in their review of the F2380. The F2380's are pretty unusable with the Fastest setting, so when set to normal/Faster the NEC model appears to be the same.

Simon also states that the F2380 is faster than the BenQ. Maybe in PixerPixAn it appears faster but in reality the BenQ shows less smearing.

TFT central talks nonsense when it comes to viewing angles. Yes, all monitors exhibit contrast "shifts" or degradation. This term is not appropriate to describe PVA colour shift. Luckily, the provided pictures tell all we need to know.

The EV2333W includes a "Fastest" setting which is implemented perfectly. There is no reason why NEC would not be able to implement OD on this panel.

The EV2333W costs twice as much though. Samsung botched the Fastest setting with the F2380's/2333t, so given the price point and intended uses for the NEC they probably decided to just not bother.

Yep. Same with some of the lowest end Flexscans lacking OD.

well using an oscilloscope as Prad.de have started to do is a pretty extreme way of measuring things and while i'm sure it does add a good level of accuracy it's funny how for many years noone worried about single stopwatch measurements from any sites who bothered to make the tests. At the end of the day it's still representative of the delay compared with a CRT although yes, i agree there's a chance there might be some differences, mostly small.

you're right

edit: think thats been updated now, as i went back to re-read

i dont think he does?! from the F2380 review: "I've also provided some comparisons of the F2380 against some of the popular and recent 24" models in the market we have tested. As you can see, the F2380 is a little faster than the AMVA based BenQ EW2420, which to be quite honest, did not perform very well in this test. Although it was rated as 8ms G2G, the AMVA panel was unresponsive and showed more obvious blurring and trailing in the moving image.".....or did you mean the other way round? F2380 appears faster in PixPeran but BenQ is faster in practice with less smearing?

what bit are you referring to?

Woops I had the F2380 faster than the BenQ backwards. The F2380 is not faster vs BenQ, but according to TFT it is because Simon is only using PixerPixAn to judge.

Seems there is no interpolation feature to speak of in this monitor. I guess if I wanted to display e.g. 1280x1024 without any scaling to retain sharpness I'd need to go with e.g. the Eizo EV2333 rather than this one?

The EV2333W can do this, as well as adjust the lightness of the borders.

It's not? Oh that is bad. I thought the VW2420 was really slow without AMA and fairly slow with it on. Ouch.

Thx - I thought so from the PRAD review

Could you elaborate on that, please?

Change black borders on an "aspect" scaled image with different aspect ratio, like 4:3, so the black borders on the left and right side are a different color or shade of grey/black.

EV2333W can aspect ratio scale, the EX231WP can only display full screen, I believe is what WhoisThatReally { :) }said.

Really? What would that be good for? Anyway, deep black will do just fine for me.

That part I was pretty sure of. If Simon didn't miss anything here, that is.

Do not mock the NEC monitor gods and their adjustable side bars or you will meet an untimely, pixelated demise!

Black is best unless you have a plasma ;)

I agree

LCD:s are far from perfect. It doesnt matter if we are talking PVA, IPS or TN.

I think cPVA is very underrated. Maybe because the discussion is so centered around gaming but for ordinary use cPVA is better than TN and IPS imo.

I agree!

This days it's all about gaming that's why pepole don't care much for VA panels but as you said the cPVA is a better panel for ordinary than IPS. I don't like IPS at all. The low contrast is really turning me off and so is the IPS glow and the agressive AG. The IPS also suffers from backlight beleeding, especially the LED ones.

My 6 year old PVA Samsung has a higher contrast than all the modern LED IPS panels, that's a joke! There is no way i would go backwards with the contrast after 6 years, no way, that's why im going to buy this NEC.

I use my pc only for work, i don't play games on it so i don't care if it has 25ms, the rest seems to be great according to TFT Central and PRAD. Viewing algles are also fine on PVA panels, i never watch my monitor from the side, so i don't care for IPS widest angle. I rather have a better picture when watching the monitor while sitting infront of it then from an angle.

I also like that EX231Wp has additional functions like touch sensitive buttons for the OSD which actually work good, a light sensor, intelegent human sensor and stuff like this which only have the gaming TN monitors, it's really packed with many features.

I was going to go for the nec, but from what I 've been reading the eizo has better uniformity in luminance and I think this might be due to the the ccfl. :)

The problem is your 6 year old PVA probably has better contrast, viewing angles and sRGB coverage from most of the modern VA screens. That is because they stopped making S-PVA panels for computer monitors and are only making AMVA now. I don't know of any new cPVA monitors either. You can find new S-PVA screens in TVs only. Most of the modern IPS screens (especially those using LED) also seem to get worse and worse in terms of viewing angles, IPS glow and BLB.
