A V-shaped or S-shaped EQ is the first of it's kind?

Why would you need to "tune every song"? Do you think the Beats software is some kind of Dr. Dre artificial intelligence and not an EQ setting?

I won't call it artificial intelligence, but it is close. I think Beat Audio makes use of some adaptive strategies to adjust each song individually. Thus, the adjustments to two different songs are different.

If it is simply an EQ setting, then why would HTC paid almost billions to buy the company and put it a EQ setting on her phones?

If you've ever done any ABX testing, you'll know that level-matching is really important; the louder choice almost always sounds 'better'. The Beats-mode EQ makes everything louder than default. The weakness of human psychology.

The loudness is an important factor, but it is not the entire story. In general, Beat Audio also makes the sound fuller and bass stronger.

The fact the Beats-mode default player doesn't play any lossless formats is also rather telling as to what their goals were, as well. ;)

Haven't tested it.

Feel free to peruse these two threads to find better alternatives to Beats for much less: http://www.head-fi.org/t/433318/sho...phones-reviewed-denon-ah-d1100-added-10-30-11 and http://www.head-fi.org/t/478568/multi-iem-review-205-iems-compared-j-phonic-k2-sp-added-11-13-11 Definitely my favorite/most useful threads on all of Head-Fi.

I am not surprised some extreme audiophiles disagree. For them, a $10,000 hi-fi may not be good enough.

As I said, I didn't claim Beat Audio is the best audio systems in the world. But it is better than average.

The Beats Solo review pretty much says it all:

Audio fidelity that can be matched (even bested) by $15 headphones. It is probably futile to attempt to stave off an argument about fidelity, but just in case:

Audio fidelity is the point of Beat Audio. The point is to play some psychological tricks to make you feel the song sounds better.

I'm a bit confused here; because on the rezound the beats enhancements only kick in when you use beats earphones and htc music player. so does that mean it peforms different than the sensation xe ? Also I wonder how it compares to the razr. This is mostly curiousity; music is really my priority when picking a phone.

Suggestion: go to Best Buy to test it yourself. I think Rezound Beat Audio is much better. But it may or may not be your taste.

The preimlinary on the nexus is not that positive (there was a fellow who indicated that the nexus used a ti chipset and there was clipping at low and high end).

Yeah. It is not positive since the first day Samsung and Google releases the hardware spec.

Well. After all, Beat Audio's headphone is not a top-of-the-line product. It is just a $100-$200 headphone. I didn't claim it is the best audio systems in the world. If you are willing to pay more, you can always find somethings to beat it.

Better than average at no cost is what Beat Audio offers you.
The point is this: it isn't a top of the line product, but it still isn't even half as good as similar priced earphones. If you read reviews on other <$100 headphones, you'd find many IEMs that sound better. Those Shure SE215s and Klipsch S4s are cheaper and yet provide better sound across a whole bunch of genres, go search for the hundreds of reviews on these two.

If it is simply an EQ setting, then why would HTC paid almost billions to buy the company and put it a EQ setting on her phones?
Because people are silly enough to buy purely on brand names alone, and Average Joe is easily duped on audio quality with strong bass. Try finding a Beats headphone with the earphone specs printed on the box: there isn't any, on any model.

@havermeyer: "The fact the Beats-mode default player doesn't play any lossless formats is also rather telling as to what their goals were, as well."
Coming in the ICS update, since FLAC support was officially added in Android 3.1. Still odd why no support was added in anyway since Samsung has FLAC in since the old Galaxy S.

@you2: Given the lack of difference between the Beats Audio implementation on the Sensation XE and XL, I reckon it's the same on the Rezound as well. I haven't checked out the Galaxy Nexus also but I think it won't hit the lofty heights of the Galaxy S / Nexus S either. Still, I'm not doing a comparison of both phones. My point is to point out facts on the Rezound when fiction is spreading on these forums.

If it is simply an EQ setting, then why would HTC paid almost billions to buy the company and put it a EQ setting on her phones?

you are a perfect example of the number one reason why they invested that much in something that is pretty insignificant, because they know it will sell, they have done the market research and found out that they will make huge money off of it. It doesn't have to be a superior product to sell, it just has to sell.

from the Engadget review
If you're not a gung-ho music enthusiast and just want a good quality pair of earphones to go with your new LTE treasure, this will be more than you ever bargained for. And quite frankly, they end up offering a good overall listening experience -- as long as you're listening to tracks that are thick on the bass and the Beats Audio is enabled, that is.

that my friend describes the vast majority of people buying a smartphone for it's audio capabilities, most people associate quality with a name brand and a lot of bass

because they know there's people like you that will run out and buy a device if it says it has Beats audio and will claim it to be the best music experience ever and will spread fud on internet forums because they don't know the difference between good sound and oversaturated, bass-heavy, heavily tweaked garbage

again I say, you have had better audio available on a hardware level for a long time now, my Samsung Charge for instance has the Wolfson WM8994 DAC which is a much much higher quality solution than the software enhanced EQ Beats audio option you bought into

I can't tell whether you are lying or not, as I haven't tried out the headphones you mentioned. But the Beat Audio headphone that comes with Rezound is a decent headphone and got a lot of great reviews on online retail stores.

Do you mean the whole Dr. Dre brand is a hype? Well, your conspiracy theory have no evidence to support.

I gave you well thought out explanations as to why you are wrong. Are you incapable of having an intelligent conversation about your wonderful Beats audio? I am afraid you will find these forums to be made of people who are pretty techy and geeky and know when they are being sold a piece of junk in a pretty box. You aren't going to find many people here who buy into the Beats audio junk just like you won't find many people here who will just run out and buy a cell phone without looking at carrier first. Most of the people here at [H]ardOcp are pretty smart about anything technological. If you want real quality audio there are plenty of people here who know quality audio. One thing I can tell you is it doesn't come from anything labeled Beats Audio.

Which of course, like public perception that Beats is good and therefore HTC knows it helps sell phones, it will turn off anyone who might have been earlier believing the FUD chiu was spouting.

I'm sorry that you can't argue against Beats Audio sucking, so you have to resort to cheap f-bombs that always fail to work. Not happy with evidence I have? Go read HardOCP's very own Dr Dre headphone review.

Hes a person who argues for the sake of argueing. When proven wrong he runs to a different arguement and keeps doing this formula. He won't respond to anything that you prove wrong.

I think there is too much focus on the beats stuff. Its a pity because the rezound seems to be a decent phone with a reasonable sound chip (I tired one in the stores with my klips s2 - which are not the highest end ear buds; but they sounded decent). Sort of wish folks would drop the beats argument and focus on the rezounds +/- as if it did not have beats :)

Exactly. I have never claimed Beat Audio is the best in the market, nor HTC. Some people keep comparing Beat Audio with a higher standard in order to depreciate the quality of Rezound.

Go ahead to pay more to buy a headphone you like. Rezound's headphone come with the package with no extra charge. For something that is free, what do you want?

No. the debate is not over, unless you ran out of arguments.
I have yet to wait for your proper reply.

Which of course, like public perception that Beats is good and therefore HTC knows it helps sell phones, it will turn off anyone who might have been earlier believing the FUD chiu was spouting.

If all you can say is to attack me as a person instead of the quality of phones, I am disappointed.

I didn't throw the F-bomb to you; I throwed it to another guy who keeps trolling this thread.

I have never made such claim. WTF you said things that I have never said.

This is a poll between Rezound and RAZR. Obviously, this contradicts the poll results here:

http://www.phonedog.com/2011/11/17/poll-motorola-droid-razr-or-htc-rezound/

This poll is more accurate because the number of votes is much larger.

you could have lots of votes, if the poll wasn't failed from the beginning, the difference between that poll and this poll is that poll only compares two Verizon Wireless carrier phones. So people can truly compare the two phones since they are on the same network. Your poll fails terribly as many people have tried to tell you, because you included a ATT handset. Anyone who is considering the Razr or the Rezound is not even considering the GSII Skyrocket. Why you ask? Because 99% of people already have service. If they are considering the Razr or the Rezound, that means they are A. already under contract with Verizon or are B. unhappy with their carrier and are looking for a good phone on Verizon because they want to switch carriers. Someone considering the GSII Skyrocket is either already on ATT or is considering switching to ATT, but in that case they are not going to even look at the Razr or Rezound because they are switching carriers........

Why are you the only person on these forums who cannot understand this concept? Why do you never answer any of the challenges any of us put to you? How come every time someone gives really good information to prove to you your statements are incorrect, you suddenly switch to a new topic.

So here we have a poll, that is flawed from the word go, made by a HTC shill, who wants so desperately to convince us all the Rezound is the top phone.....but cannot have an intelligent conversation about anything without dropping F bombs.......seriously man? Why did you even start this messed up poll to begin with when you already made your purchase? Do you understand the words you are reading? Because every time you reply you look less and less informed.

Any poll can contradict the flawed poll here.

The one at PhoneDog.com is accurate because both are on Verizon and it's almost dead even in the long run which basically means the poll is worthless.

This poll is *NOT* flawed. But there are trolls who keeps saying this poll is flaw for unreasonable reasons, causing a mess here. Some even voted against Rezound just to attack me personally.

If you really think carriers are important, you can ignore the votes for SGS2. Then you can get a comparison between Rezound and RAZR.

The current result of the poll on PhoneDog.com is here:

- Motorola DROID RAZR. Thin profile and bigger battery! 29.57% (1,069 votes)
- HTC Rezound. I'm all about music and an awesome HD display! 34.25% (1,238 votes)
- I'm on the fence between these two right now. 16.9% (611 votes)
- Nope! I'm team #something else 19.28% (697 votes)

Total Votes: 3,615

that would make sense though chui. we asked you to fix that in the beginning, but you were hard headed. If the poll was between those two, I would probably have chosen the Razr. I like it's looks, thinness, light weight, and Motorola phones are built extremely well. Also, and I know you wont believe me, and will think this is a troll post or whatever......but I have always had a hatred for Beats audio, because I saw it for what it is, a gimmick. It was a gimmick when they first released headphones, it was a gimmick when HP made laptops with it, and it's still a gimmick on a cellphone. That and I know I have better audio on my Samsung Charge without a fancy "Beats audio" name and headphones. That completely kills the HTC Rezound for me, I refuse to carry a gimmicky driven phone with Dr Dre marketing. Truthfully though, without the Nexus in the poll, it's meaningless, because that is the phone I would end up buying. Too bad I am still under a contract with Verizon that doesn't mature until July 2011. By then I can probably get the Nexus for much less and by then it will be running slick as hell on Cyanogenmod ICS. That's all I care about now.

once again, i made very logical, on topic "non-trolling" statements

Anyone who is considering the Razr or the Rezound is not even considering the GSII Skyrocket. Why you ask? Because 99% of people already have service. and you ignore and refuse to answer to them.....what about the above statement do you fail to comprehend?

Rezound beats RAZR by a small margin only (~5%), and quite a few people on the fence.
For people who visited the page, only ~19% of them will choose somethings else. Clearly, RAZR and Rezound are top cellphones in the current market.

So, based on that statement, is this poll between four and five times more accurate? http://www.droid-life.com/2011/11/0...-been-announced-galaxy-nexus-rezound-or-razr/

You should probably let them over at phonedog know how much better the Rezound is. I suggest at least two responses to everyone who likes the RAZR. And four about ***true*** HD for everyone who likes the GNex. I'm sure they will enjoy it as much as we do.

Interesting. This poll shows RAZR won by a small margin. But notice that this poll is held on a website called "Droid life". I am sure a lot of Droid fans over there.

Galaxy Nexus was once called Droid Prime. Am I correct?

No need. Guys over at phonedog have already chosen Rezound as the winner.

I think the poll on phonedog is more accurate than the one on droid-life, as I saw no bias towards certain group of fans.

Too much hype for Nexus Prime.

Once again your stupidity and bias is showing. Droid is used in nearly all Verizon android phones the RAZR is called a Droid RAZR, HTC Droid Incredible etc. If there were a bias it would've been leaning towards the RAZR since the OG droid was moto.

watch out, if you post something that makes sense he will call you a troll, tell you to F-off and then put you on his ignore list LOL

Droid is short for Android, Droid Life caters to ALL Android powered phones, including his OMG Beats rocks HTC Rezound.....of course, since nobody can tell him anything he won't understand that either and you will become another troll on his failed poll

The "Droid" in "Droid Life" refers to them being a Verizon-centric Android site. Thus the phone choices in the poll.

no no no Beats audio is not a gimmick, most people run out and buy phones without even thinking about the carrier, the Samsung SAMOLED+ screen is junk

therefore, the people that voted on Droidlife's poll most certainly favored the phone listed as a "Droid" and would never give an HTC a fair shake

it just keeps getting better and better, i think i might start a new poll, to determine if chui is capable of manufacturing an alternative reality

No. Verizon have dropped the Droid brand on HTC Rezound. They won't call it "HTC Droid Rezound". But RAZR is still being called "Motorola Droid RAZR".

But I am not sure people think this way. I think the branding effect is real and exists.
Even if the effect is small, it may be enough to account for the difference in the poll.

P.S. ignored nobody_here's two posts.

I found one more interesting thing about my HTC Rezound.
What I found is that when I played music over bluetooth in my car,
the audio enhancement (not sure it is Beat Audio but the red dot of
Beat Audio on screen has not been turned on) still work. But it works
only using the stock audio player but not other audio players such Realplayer.

The music I used to listen suddenly become much more enjoyable.
Apart from stronger bass, the background instrument suddenly becomes
more clear and audible. It is true even if the songs do not require strong bass.

It is definitely a nice upgrade for me!

^ That's because HTC has their own equalizer running on top of Beats as covered in GSMArena's review on the Sensation XE and XL.

I used the public perception argument on your posts aggravating other forumers as an example of why HTC paid millions to partner with Beats: brand names sell, because public perception on famous brands = good, irrespective of quality. Just like public perception on you is bad, because you cannot post logical arguments and resort to insults.

And wow, another cherry picking of sites again to prove your "superiority". Droid-Life caters to Verizon Android phones, the site itself came about when the OG Droid came out.

BTW, yet to hear a reply on you from this: any response to evidence on numerous sites including head-fi and our very own HardOCP here that Beats headphones suck and are massively overpriced for the poor sound quality?

I can't tell what you said is true or not. But the sound improvement over bluetooth is real.

I didn't insult you. But if you feel this way, sorry but it is your problem.

Why can't someone else can cherry picking site (such as the driod site above) but I can't?

Btw, the site is kind of popular. Their opinions mean somethings and it is hardly a cherry picking.

As I said, Beat Audio is not the best but is definitely better-than-average *at no cost*. No overpriced here. You get the phone and the headphones for $0.01 on Amazon if you are qualified.

Sometimes it's too easy...

I don't think anyone here begrudges you for enjoying your purchase (well, maybe at this point...), but you may want to tone down your ardency slightly.

Why I want to tone down my "ardency"?

Btw, I have to say I won't be affected by branding effect. If so, I would follow the folks to wait for Galaxy Nexus instead :).

I chose Rezound solely based on what I think the best value and best features. I think I will enjoy it everyday next year.

I have the SGS2 LTE. Does anyone else notice vertical lines on their screen especially when viewing grey colors? This has been a known issue in other forum sites.

Too bad they couldn't give you the option of high end buds when ordered from the site. You are stuck with their beats audio software and the buds. My laptop used to have the beats software installed until I got rid of it too but you don't see me complaining about it being apart of my purchase.

Either way my friend who bought his rezound likes it, if you like it you like it, no reason to go into everythread and post about how it delivers babies, saved jesus and gave the packers their first loss.

Can you elaborate on your dislike ?

  • It's not as silky smooth as some would have you believe - especially when opening, or switching, web pages - it's a little clunky
  • Battery life is meh.. not horrible, but could be better - With identical usage patterns I go 2 days on my fruit phone, this one makes it a day
  • I don't wanna say it's buggy, but there's some shit that just doesn't want to cooperate - for example the volume never seems to hold a setting, apps just stop responding to their short cuts, background images for your home screens act wonky - takes some doodling to get them right
  • I don't care for the rockers
On the plus side -
  • It feels solid in the hand
  • It's not as thick as you might think
  • Screen looks great

  • It's not as silky smooth as some would have you believe - especially when opening, or switching, web pages - it's a little clunky

I don't notice any lagging on web pages and screen switching, etc. Maybe you forgot to kill all the background jobs before you try out the phone. It will make a big difference if some programs running in background.

  • Battery life is meh.. not horrible, but could be better - With identical usage patterns I go 2 days on my fruit phone, this one makes it a day

I have prepared to buy a few backup batteries. I won't go for RAZR exactly because I can't replace the battery on RAZR.

Good to know you eventually learn how to use your phone and fix these problems.
I have never had a single issue with the volume setting and short cuts.

Let me add a few things:
    • *true* 720p HD screen. Play youtube videos at HD resolution.
    • Beat audio headphones (better-than-average headphones) and the software audio enhancement.
    • better camera len for low light conditions
