Apple SUCKS At Security

what is annoying is apple fans will just completely ignore things like these and say "uh oh, I don't care about security so its okay"

"Smart cover"? That marketing people must have been doing too many drugs that day.

no, what's annoying is when apple has a security flaw, we get pages and pages of just disgusting comments that really don't have anything to do with the topic at hand, but when android has a security flaw, you know like the HTC one a few weeks ago or when it was sending random text messages to people, it goes largely unnoticed. I guess that's what happens when nobody gives two shits about your product.

In before:

Android is too popular that's why it owns 76% of mobile malware.

Android malware = 76%
ios 0%

You suck crApple.

Uh, there was an active thread about that issue here and quite a lot of talk about it and it wasn't an Android issue per se. And when it comes to security flaws I don't the Apple or Google has taken it in the gnads anything like Microsoft.

at least they don't get viruses like pcs....

This really raises a pet peeve of mine. You do know what PC means, right? Personal Computer. Last I checked Apple makes Personal Computers; therefore all Apple computers are PCs. So let's call a spade a spade. "At least they don't get viruses like Windows do..."

When ever people say "well at least they (apple) don't [xyz] like PCs" I really, really want to do them physical harm.

Since this has turned into a Apple Vs. Windows / Apple vs. Android / Apple Vs. Whatever thread, let's remember a few things.

Apple devices are not perfect -
They can and will lose your data
They can and will fail
They can and will cause you huge head aches
Why? Because they're still a computer. And computers do this regardless of who makes them.

Didnt know hardocp had such hate for apple products.

It's a niche website for PC hardware enthusiasts. It is dripping in advertising banners and news links that redirect to the same article and even more banners. They have a vested interest in keeping people hating Apple products and to carry on tinkering with bits of PC hardware and visiting their website. The forums are a great source of information for PC hardware but if you have any interest in Apple products then this is the last place you should visit!

Picked this quote up off an article at CNN, thought it was pretty funny.

"The easiest way to safeguard your computer? Ditch the Windows machine. A Mac will keep the contents of your computer safer, says Avi Rubin, a computer science professor at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore. That's because Windows has a bigger market share, so it's a natural target for hackers."

When "experts" keeping say this then everyone will keep believing that everything at Apple is perfect.

"Smart cover"? That marketing people must have been doing too many drugs that day.

Kind of like "Airport Extreme", "SuperDrives", and "MightyMouse" ;)

Actually just 802.11g, a DVD burner, and a crappy optical mouse.

This stuff is very hypocritical. Open source people used to love the spout the notion of the "many eyes" concept, the idea being that the more people that looked at and contributed to code the more robust it becomes. Indeed it's a very logical idea but for some reason it comes to security, then it becomes the opposite. In the long run I think that constant hacking has made Windows a better product through pain.

And what's really odd is that a computer scientist from one of the nations most prestigious universities would trumpet the concept of security through obscurity.

Not only computers can cause failure, every technology has only limited reliability.
Data loss can't be insured anyhow, so it's in favor of everyone to backup them and take care of them.

Bollocks!

As a long time computer enthusiast,( going back to Voodoo 2 SLI) this is the PERFECT place to discuss HARDWARE. At the end of the day Apple packages together some compelling machines with unique features. They may not be suited for everyone, but its hard to say they make Dell level junk too. Speaking of which Apple is a HARDWARE company so direct comparisons to Wintel hardware/software stack is skewed at best.

This is a site for people who like to ticker with all kinds stuff, including phones. Windows is popular with a crowd like this when it comes to PCs because it's relatively open, easy to use, and supports an pretty open gaming with the powerful PC hardware. On the phone side, people LOVE Android because it represents a lot of what Windows is on the PC, relatively easy to tinker with and lots of options.

People here usually like to tinker and the products that are popular here tend to reflect that philosophy. It's not so much about hating Apple hating is it is the locked down and prepackaged nature of their products. One of the reasons that a lot of people here for instance don't like Windows Phone and blast it for being locked down and prepackaged.

The airport extreme is actually dual band 802.11n. The superdrive is just a name, lame marketing, mightymouse is just a name and I'll revert back to you're gonna use the mouse you want to in a windows environment and its not like you can't use that same mouse in a mac environment.

Just to add its not that you can't "tinker" with an iphone/ipad/or osx. Anyone can write apps for OSX, and more often than not most people who tinker with their android phone are gonna run a custom rom which is the equivalent of jailbreaking an apple device.
Its not that it can't be done, a lot of people just tend to overlook it and dismiss anything that is apple.

People are misinformed for the most part like stating that OSX had no alt-tab and that the dock was useless/confusing/ugly when in fact it can very customized.

Oh and stupid comments like these don't help either with having a civil conversation. Yeah as an apple user I can safely say I leave my car doors unlocked and my house doors unlocked at night . I got my CHL so I can leave my gun at home, and all my apple devices have no passcode and I leave them on tables in public while I go to the bathroom. Furthermore my pincode for my atm is 1234.

I probably should have clarified before I get blasted, yeah I know rooting =/= jailbreaking.

LOL, gotta love the apple people crying that this is false....

uh no, its not. Get real and realize..... this is a BAD flaw that most users DO NOT KNOW about. Hence, it should NOT BE SET LIKE THIS BY DEFAULT (cough, SECURITY FLAW for clueless users, cough)

Just because the 1% of you here (on hardforum, so you at least have half a brain in techy stuff) know how to fix it does not mean the other clueless 99% know this is trouble!

This is like selling a car, and not telling the users that the doors don't lock (but you can enable locks by doing this special setting we don't tell you when we sell it!)

100% no different, see.... your shit (phone 4S, or the car in this caes) will get stolen and it will be TOO LATE to get your privacy back. Of course, the 1% of mechanics would figure this out like you guys do with your phone, but the 99% of people driving the car will remain CLUELESS to the security flaw.

While Apple sucks at security, they excel in marketing and lawsuits.

Spot on. And what's funny is its not apple paying for the advertising or lawsuits... its the appleheads who buy the phones! They are getting jipped off at $100-300 PER PHONE, PURE PROFIT (fact is, iirc, the iphone costs $158.00 to make in China, LOL look it up). While other phones that can basically do 99% of the same hardware (and even more hardware, like NFC chips in the new nexus phones) sell for $0 on a contract.

One can tinker with anything, it's just that some products encourage, even promote it, and that's simply not the Apple mantra. I mean Apple doesn't exactly promote jailbreaking or overclocking does it? The whole persona of Apple products are one's that are perfect out of the box and never need any tinkering.

Nothing is perfect regardless of who makes it and what platform it is. But can that same argument be made for Droid phones? To further even derail this thread, do most Droid manufacturers promote rooting and overclocking? (legitimate question)

Not to my knowledge.

Now that you know about this security issue. Go ahead and do some damage to iPhone 4S and iPad2s! I'll even tell you the root password for all iPhones. It's "alpine".

Your analogy is flawed btw. ANY phone or car for that matter is not secured once another person have PHYSICAL access to it.

Your sorry of a phone Samsung Galaxy Nexus is a huge DOWNGRADE from SGSII.
--It cost $299 with a contract on November 10th from Verizon.
--Screen is a downgrade from SGSII (non Plus SUPER AMOLED)
--The GPU is the same as Samsung Galaxy S (iPhone 4S already beats the SGSII in GPU benchmark)
--The 5MP camera sucks.
--no SD card slog (only 16GB or 32GB options while you can get a 64GB iPhone 4S)

I wasn't just speaking of phones but computer hardware as well. Apple sells black boxes that are advertised as perfect and requiring no technical knowledge or effort to do amazing things, Apple products are magical out of the box. This is Apple's raison d'être.

Hey I know you know this, but ALL products are advertised as perfect. NOBODY is gonna advertise their products otherwise.

Nobody sells the concept of perfection like Apple. And again, they are perfect black boxes, no fuss no muss, perfect from start to finish, magical even. This is the Apple brand.

Haven't actually heard of one, but the nature of android meant making firmwares aren't limited to just the manufacturers.

There is however less need to root an android than it is to jailbreak an iOS.
