OCZ Vertex 2 SSD 120GB 119.99AR Today Only

Even at $1 per GB this isnt hot.. Its performance will drop significantly & end up being a very poor drive.. This is the case with all the newer Vertex 2's since OCZ went & changed the memory on them..
 
The Vertex 2 had a fairly significant number of issues didn't it?

I love the performance of OCZ drives (I own 4 of them) but it seems they have some reliability issues. I think my next SSD will likely be an Intel.
 
what exactly would the difference be between the current vertex 2 drives versus the vertex 2 120GB that i bought maybe 9-10 months ago?
 
OCZ is killing their what little they have left in their reputation they should debrand all this garbage and sell it off to rebranders like rosewill or something. There are now a whole slew of drives from OCZ which have nearly 50% bad ratings at places like newegg and are being sold for around $1/GB.

32nm to 25nm memory if I remember right.. The 25nm was slower & the SF controller wasn't as good with it..

So you take a drive that benchmarks great, but performs mediocre at best & over the course of a few months the performance drops like a rock.. I had a 90gb that after about 6 months would not write any faster then about 25mb/s until it finally died all together.. Got a c300 afterwards & there has been NO slow down in the several months since.
 
I've been using a 90gb vertex2 for over 6 months and still works great, no problems, and is fast.
 
There have been 3 major versions of the Vertex 2:
(using the 120GB as an example)

  1. 34nm NAND (original release: 32 x 4GB NAND)
  2. 25nm NAND (using 16 x 8GB NAND chips)
  3. 25nm NAND (using 32 x 4GB NAND chips)

#1 Performed great, but due to 34nm no longer being produced, had to be discontinued

#2 When released, benchmarked fine on compressible data, but was slower due to NAND die-shrink process issues, firmware issues, as well as less NAND chips.
These were sold on Newegg (and other vendors) as #1 with no change in specs. This caused a firestorm online. I had purchased one of these, and had to RMA it to receive drive #3...

#3 Addressed most of the non-25nm related issues by going back to more NAND chips, and firmware addressing other issues. You SHOULD be receiving these from any reputable online vendor.


While these drives don't perform EXACTLY like they did when initially released, they are as reliable than the original 34nm drives. I've owned one since 1/31/2011: No issues yet.

Or you could just get a Crucial or Intel drive, and know you have a reliable drive that performs well.

Just my opinion, though.

Your statement is well taken I remember the whole story you tell. The problem is the reviews on newegg are still like 50% bad and we are talking about reviews from this month. So either the old drives are not out of the pipeline or there are more problems.
