Origin Now Reaches 5 million "daily" users.

http://www.gamespot.com/news/6341137/origin-surpasses-5-million-daily-users

EA's downloadable storefront Origin has seen steady adoption numbers since its launch in June, and the publisher announced the service topped 4 million users in September. Speaking with Digital Life this week, EA COO Peter Moore delivered another update on the service's numbers, saying that just four-and-a-half months after release, Origin has surpassed 5 million daily users.

..................Origin is likely to receive another registration boost this December with the release of BioWare's Star Wars: The Old Republic. EA's downloadable service is the exclusive digital distributor for the sci-fi massively multiplayer online game.

From a business standpoint, this was genius.

"We're fairly excited about Origin," Brown said during a UBS conference in London (as reported by Gamasutra). "We have about 4 million installs of the client, we expect that number to climb substantially as we enter this holiday season."

"Initially, Origin is set up to deliver EA games, but very soon, we'll be delivering third-party content to Origin," he added.

Right now I only use two clients, Origin and Steam. The plan was to use Origin for my EA games and Steam for everything else.
EA will need to have some killer prices for me to change that. Competition is good.

I will not install Origin on my computer, period.

I'm going to install it twice, to offset you.

Seriously, do people still care about this? Origin is a good thing for PC gamers. Stop letting Steam run the show and throw some more competition in the mix.

No shit really? You're releasing two of the biggest games in pc gaming this year at that time. Way to predict the future Nostradamus ><

They do for some reason. There are a lot of "Steam is the One True Way!!" fanboys out there who hate any and everything that might compete with it. In particular they don't like Origin because EA is "evil" for wanting to do something that Valve doesn't like and thus getting BF3 pulled.

i think people worry more about EA and their past DRM tactics and such, so who knows what they may try with Origin, mind you Steam gathers almost everything their is to know about you on steam already.

Competition is good.

This is something that "steam or nothing" people seem to forget. The best thing for consumers would be two equally matched services. Even though I like having all my stuff on steam, i'm not going to pay more just to have it on there.

It already locked me out of one of my games, despite barely having any Origin games, so it's strike rate is pathetic vs Steams 100% record with me despite 35games in my library.

competition is very good. I want to see what it will develop into. Dont want to be the guinea pig.. 4 million guinea pigs and counting :D

I don't see EA as competition. I see EA as money grubbing assholes. I really have to be sold on a client before I add it to my PC. I had to test out D2D before I used it and honestly after dealing with the game comrade stuff I ended up just rebuying most of the D2d Games I had on steam. EADownload manager was tolerable but this Origin crap is getting on my nerves.

At this point EA is just doing this just get their finger further in my asshole. Pulling games? On top of everything that EA has been doing the last year that was the big "Fuck you." So no, EA Fuck you. You'll have to try harder than just being a giant dick for me to download your shitty store client.

No don't fucking label me as a steam boycott fag. I went through the same thing with steam. Couple years from now when EA proves they don't FUCKING HATE GAMERS which I could swear they do maybe I'll try out the service. Even ONlive has done a better job of trying to get gamers to use their service.

Perception can be your false reality. What mega company doesn't want your money?
Valve wanting to be your friend first and then your money is a false reality. If that what convinces you to buy only Steam games, by all means enjoy.

I'll believe it when EA supports Indie developers and modders instead of buying studios like cattle.

Question about the BF3 preorder... I placed the order but don't see it anywhere in my account.. i want to pay paypal but they didn't even ask for my pp account??? Any one have a clue on how it works?

Welcome to the internet.. People bitch about stupid shit that doesn't matter.. Origin is fine like all the other Download clients out there.

Origin support is actually very good, it's pretty lol how far they will bend over backwards for you to get your way. Even if BF3 was on Steam it would still need origin anyway, Battlelog directly interfaces with it. Joining a server was actually a wrapper around a url like: origin://12398fuck_alotofnumbers_askdjasdkl_reallyLONGSTRINGFUCKsdd12931238DICK

Really though you can pretty much just completely ignore it if you want to. Once you log in you can just have it sit in the back like Steam and never touch it again.

Also that number is installs... Steam has 4+ million actually using it daily. It still completely dwarfs it.

Origin is stable, downloads are always fast (small user base could be attributed to this I guess), and it works well. I have about 15 games in my library now. They activate just fine, they deactivate just fine, once its installed I never really need to launch it again. It gets updated fairly often as well.

But than again, I don't bitch just to bitch.

Now you're stating facts, I agree sir.

When Fail is angry at Origin I don't mind, because he had legitimate issues with games from EA in the past.
When someone has been mistreated, they have every right to not buy from EA. Just the "EA is the devil" opinions can get a but far fetched.

Refresh your game folder. Usually the client will log you into Paypal after you checkout.

I don't think that EA is the devil, however, I don't think they have earned the trust of gamers either, while Valve has a clear track record of good service and keeping gamers in mind, and of course, they have the excellent Steam sales, autopatching, and great community integration.

The fact they have been around a long time, are familiar to me, have all my games and friends there, that makes me want to stick with them.

The only other DD service I have used was Good Old Games GoG.com downloader.

I used it cause they are the only source of old games and are owned by CD Projekt and I support them because they made those excellent Witcher games.

EA, while not being the Sons of Beelzebub, can certainly do a lot better.

Don't trust EA to pull support for their client as soon as it doesn't show growth or profits. They do it to their games, only releasing patches for games for maybe 2-3 months. With the Battlefield series in particular I noticed that their games only get patches after long dry spells when a new Battlefield game is about to be released.

When it's been around a year or two and people are still happy with it, then I'll check back in.

As long as EA continues to allow other DD services to sell its games, I'm okay with it. Yes, not allowing BF3 on steam is a shitty move. Probably smart from a business perspective but it's not good for PC gamers. If they decide that it's in their best interest to limit their games to only their DD service, that will very much be a negative for PC gamers. Having BF3 require Origin running is a sign of that possibility imo.

Origin itself isn't bad, and could be good for us. If EA use it as a way to refuse to compete, that will be a negative.

Origin seems to be improving. EA clarified what "personal data" Origin would be collecting and EA has actually thrown Aussie gamers a bone with a 50%-Off sale on Origin at the moment - the prices are still inflated due to regional-pricing but it's better than everything being $80 all the time and providing absolutely no incentive to use the service at all.

If/when Origin does start selling third-part titles then the digital market will get a bit more interesting.

4 Million Users. 3,950,000 of them are not by choice.

I support competition but I do not support EA.

So have you heard how they are repackaging Tiger Woods Online and selling it as Tiger Woods 12 on PC? PC gamers don't even get a console port anymore.

For SW:TOR/Mass Effect 3/BF3/BF3 alpha/BF3 beta...

How is it not a personal choice?

They want to play those games, so they know they have to install it, so they install it.

It's still a personal choice.

EA may have put a figurative gun to their heads, but not a literal one.

I think you know what he means :p

I really don't see an issue with a game forcing you to use an app. Valve has been doing it for years. Now EA is doing it too and they are a bad guy? Get real.

Theres two big games coming from them? Whats this second game you speak of?

Well.. it was a smart move making their games essentially proprietary. I don't use Origin at the moment but I'm sure I'll have to when Mass Effect 3 comes out. I'm not going to boycott a game I really want to play over something like that.

Best case scenario... hopefully Origin's success leads EA to invest more in PC development.

Don't you mean Activision?

Only BF3 will tell.

Anyway I know it's petty, but Gabe(yes that fat guy) mentioned in an Interview that Valve has bottomless pockets now and can afford to pretty much do whatever they want. Yeah it's still a business but it really feels like Valve is run by guys that just wanna make games. While I already owned both games It was seriously unheard of for a publisher to give away games like Portal and Tf2. I was impressed. I still don't understand what the deal was with Alien Swarm. Why pay some modders to finish a mod and then just give it away?

They also have letters of writ from Indie studios saying that Valve/Steam literally saved their business. When Devs need help Steam promotes the shit out of them.

Now I'm on the EA facebook and I have seen the recent very decent deals they've been posting to get people to get on origin, but that's not enough for me. EA isn't committed to gaming. Money comes first and that saddens me. I wanna give my money to Devs and publisher's that are here to make games they want to play and money is just a means to an end. I can't find it now but there was an article on the Escapist calling out EA for making Gamers look like Assholes with the "Deadly Sins" crap and "Mom doesn't want you to play Dead Space 2" among other slights that really just made gamers look bad. This, Origin and BF3 turning into another CoD has me really put off on buying anything from EA.

Insightful and well worded post piscian18.

It isn't competition when Origin is big enough to yank all EA games from other DD sites and go exclusive. That is the opposite of competition. On that note, Steam CANNOT be a monopoly while copyright exists. If Valve gets nasty, they can't just sell digital downloads of games they don't own, the publisher can simply NOT use Steam and another DD service will spring up quickly to fill the void.

The way things were were almost IDEAL. Valve had to play nice with publishers and the publishers couldn't overlook the userbase of Steam. When the publisher has their own popular DD service they get to be as NASTY as they want. And the concern in that EA has a very bad rep in the game community, not any less being that they are a share-driven public company as well. They COULD (in theory) be bought out and shutdown tomorrow, Valve cannot.

That's why Steam being the one and only true DD service was a good thing for us.

I second Ryom's sentiment on this post. Stockholders have no place in art. I hope Valve never goes public.

I don't expect this to happen. EA sells BF3 for the same price as (or more than) other retailers on Origin, despite cutting out the middle man.
