PC Battlefield 3 Lacks Key FPS Feature: No Ingame Server Browser.. Yes I'm serious.

Whether or not the web browser is good isn't really the point to me. IMO, removing in-game server browsers is a step back for PC gaming. That shit goes back to the days of Quake 2, and I thought we were past that.

Saying that DICE/EA can't code a proper in-game browser isn't an excuse, either. Should not even remotely be a problem for a developer of AAA titles.

That said, it won't affect my buying decision, but that's just my 2 cents.

progress is a step back?

well ok

Guess I'll just get CS:GO. I'm tired of all the anti-PC shit in FPS' lately.

This server browser is an actual web page that you launch separate from the game, correct?

If so, it would be OK for the first game that you join, but if you wanted to join a different server, you'd have to alt-tab or quit out of the game to find a new one. That's much more of a hassle than just disconnecting from the server, being brought back to the in game server browser, and selecting a different server.

The only difference is this: you hit alt-tab instead of esc.

How is that more of hassle?

But still much, much longer than any game with a good server browser. I can't imagine waiting for the game to quit and launch every time I wanted to play a new server.

Read what everyone, including myself, that has actually played the game. It works seamlessly and is just as fast as an in game browser.

What is your next made up complaint?

That's a lie...

It's faster than the in-game browser. Not having to worry about watching logo screens, signing into the MP portion after launch. It worked great during the Alpha and I really only had two complaints with it.

It didn't work with Opera and you had to join a match to change graphical settings.

As long as they allow me to disable all the intro videos at the startup of the game, I have no problem with using an external game browser.

They don't because it loads directly to the map just like it would with an in game browser.

People need to start actually reading how this actually works.

7 pages?? Really? FFS grow the fuck up and stop throwing your toys from your prams.

The Alpha worked absolutely fine, being able to look for a game whilst finishing off other things was a welcome addition and as soon as the rest of you play it I hope you revisit this thread and see the amount of crying and bitching was for absolutely nothing.

From a technical standpoint this makes a LOT of sense. You can push updates whenever you want to the site and as often as you want without any user interaction or notice. Having a dedicated browser update inside the game would involve a patch, which takes bandwidth and server load, making it a pain if everyone tried to update at the same time as you will have slow download rates, which we have all seen with every game. IMO EA/DICE is trying to avoid this as it has been an issue with EVERY MMO type game in the past. With a web server you can update break/fix stuff and add new features virtually on the fly. I think its a great idea and about time we got a new form of server browsing than all these half ass clunky abominations that come with games (especially DICE titles).

Bottom line is the experience will be better for both DICE and the end user.

So I have:

Launch Origins
Launch BF3
Tab Out
Launch Web browser
Find a game
Tab in?

Rather than:
Launch Game
Play.

??? I don't know, it just seems like everything is becoming a hassle for BF3. I really want to play the game but ever week something else comes out that is either speculation or just sounds like a turn off. I almost wouldn't mind the origins thing but now I have to log onto their website as well as their third party app.

Nope.

  1. Launch Battlelog (Either through Origin or just login to the site)
  2. Choose MP Server/Single/Co-Op and Click Launch (if you hadn't already launched Origin it should start up now)
  3. Game loads straight to the level skipping all the "normal" stuff such as unskippable logo movies.
  4. Play Game

When you are done...

Exit the game via menu or Alt-Tab out

How is it humanly possible you came up with all those steps when it has been said over and over that it is not that way?

Everything seems like a hassle when you apparently know little about how it actually works.

Server browser on a web browser? Oh noes, what will I do? It hurts like sand in my vagina!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

At first I was like ick! But then I read it loads straight into the game, no crappy intros or all the crap and on top of that the game was designed for alt-tabbing in mind.... I think it will be ok.

Its still stupid having to alt tab everytime to find a server and back on i dont care i want ingame browser stupid devs..

I almost always have issues alt tabbing out of games. Im shocked they wouldnt copy the functionality of the steam browser. The ability to use the same browser in and out the game while being able to queue up another server while still playing on one is key functionality IMO.

a sizeable hassle
and escape overlay would be instantaneous... I can easily check out other servers I may want to join in between respawns but alt tab for me is no where near as seamless. It could take me a good 30-60 seconds to go out and back in a game.

So, if they have to include a server browser on the consoles, why don't they just put the same code into the PC version? You'd think that the code could be lifted almost verbatim from the Xbox 360 version.

Edit: Or at least have a simple browser internal to the game, so you at least don't have to be alt+tab out of it. That seems really half-assed, to me.

A. BF3 alt-tabs much faster than any modern game I've yet played, on my old raptor 150 is was pretty much instant.

B. if it takes you 30-60 seconds to alt-tab from any game, you need a new computer. period.

Was in the alpha testing with the battlelog it wasn't that bad game loaded up quite fast

I don't mind that much, I used a similar website to find CS:S servers to play on. It had more features and worked so I didn't complain. I usually stayed on the same couple of servers anyway.

And if the game crashes on alt-tab like a lot of current games do? Guess that means get a new computer as well right? Hardware manufacturers just love people with that attitude, so feel free to just throw money at it.

Sorry but this is just stupid and lazy on the devs. So what they are telling me is the best user experience they could come up with is having a server browser that doesn't even run in game. Who give a fuck if it's just as fast as loading up BFBC2 when it's a much bigger pain in the ass. It's like EA is trying to find ways to piss off the PC users, then when it doesn't sell like the console version they'll use it as proof that PC gaming is dead.

EA has fucked this game up too much, and I'm for sure going to wait a couple weeks at least for all the reviews before I even consider purchasing this game. And I had such high hopes, but each tidbit of news they release makes the game sound like bigger piece of shit.

I think people are having a hard time with the alt-tab concept due to misplaced prejudice from past experiences. Traditionally alt tab (and window mode) type support hasn't been a priority for FPS type games, there was never a real point to focus development on this, and this genre probably is the weakest in this area.

I play many games where I can alt-tab/restore/minimize in the same time it would take to traditionally press esc and to bring up the main menu (where the server browser is typically located). A game does not have to take forever to restore/minimize and/or crash every other time doing so, it is just that many have not been designed with this in mind.

I was in the same boat as alot of you when I saw you had to launch through the browser during alpha but it works quite well. The ONLY thing that i ran into was it started my game minimized. Other than that I say it was just as fast if not faster than trying to switch servers in BC2. I could completely exit out and connect to another server with less clicks in the time it would take someone to log into BC2 and download their stats. That's not counting all the intro BS like in most games. The only problem I'd see is because its browser based you cannot play singleplayer without being on the internet. But if your playing BF3 primarly as a singleplayer game you need to GTFO.

What recent game have you played that has problems with alt tabbing? Since I went to Windows 7, most games now alt tab so much more smoothly. Not to mention BF3 is a DX10/11 game and doesnt suffer from some of the DX9 alt tabbing issues.

There's a 60fps twitch shooter on the way - MW3, and a real military shooter - Red Orchestra 2,
so this is no biggie.

I hated it. And I was in the alpha. And I was VERY vocal.

What aspect of it did you hate? What does an in game browser do that Battlelog doesn't?

I was in alpha, and really liked Battlelog. I was even telling a buddy that came over to play that I had hoped it stayed the release games browser because it is so much better than any server browser I had ever used.
