i am looking to decide and stay with a virtualization software package. (FREE)

right now MS virtual pc 2007 does the best job for what i need.

what i really need is the ability to have the workstation vm's to have local ip's and grab dhcp addresses as well as join the domain (for testing)

i tried virtualbox, but it does not like having a local ip.

any other ones i should try ?

sorry.
i did not give enought info.

i need it for my workstation.
i already have esxi on my servers.

i wanted something for my desktop.

since when doesn't vmware require specific sata/raid controllers to run ?

vmware says "vmware server" runs on servers, but says nothing about workstations

Okay. VMware Server.

lmao

Your responses are hilarious :). VMware server is the best free one. It isn't going to be like using workstation, but it is free and probably in line with the best. I like virtual box myself for a workstation-like setup, but that would run counter to my VMware fanboism.

virtualbox ?

If you (are willing to) run linux, try KVM/virt-manager. It rocks.

I'm not sure why no one has recommended VMware Server yet...?

Hyper-V on a stripped down Server 08 install.

I just wanna be different.

Did you set the network card to Bridged Mode? By default I think its NAT, which conserves IP addresses on your local network. Virtualbox does what you ask it to.

+1

The only time i have trouble is with my ESET Security set to Interactive. For some reason it blocks DNS, if it is in Auto it will work fine.

uhh, wut?

I use it, myself, to run an XP instance so I can VPN in to work if needed.
I've had no issues with VirtualBox.

sorry.
i am using virtualbox PORTABLE.
it wont let me choose a bridged adapter.
unless you know of a way to get it to work :)
i love virtualbox, but i have not tried the installable version.

virtualbox will grab its own ip address if u change the network type... read the fun manual for that or take a couple days to figure it out like i dad :-D

Are you looking for a Windows XP guest?? if you run Win 7 pro, u might be able to use the built in Windows XP Mode... else, VM Server or Virtualbox :-p

I would like a bare metal hypervisor that's a little more forgiving with my hardware than esxi. For OS integrated cm, virtualbox has flat out worked for every test OS I've thrown at it, even 64bit

Problem is, you can't really have both. The reason ESXi is so rock solid is the hardware support.

so why are you looking at other installed virtualization apps if you haven't tried the full virtualbox app?
