Thanks unhappy_mage - fun stuff ahead!Awesome project, I love the stain. Looking forward to seeing what hardware you put in this beast
Bang on mannyman, more deets to come soon, thanks for the positive comments!Looks like a dual socket 771 board, Looks great so far!
Those are certainly very good ideas. I'll give a wait and see to see how this works out - you'll see in this update, I managed to straighten out the fans pretty well anyhow. I'm not worried about them falling out either, since I cut the holes small, the fans fit pretty tightly. What about using pink foamboard with a bit of the softer foam glued around the edges? Or just a rigid fan frame made from ABS or wood with isolation foam on the edges. That might solve the problem and create a more stable base so you don't have to worry about fans falling out and stuff.
Thanks ModestMoo!I like that idea!
Good luck man, nice project.
Yup, it's looking pretty tricky in there. I think I will put the HDD cages in the actual air intake.. you'll see what I mean soon! The only empty space i see is behind the PSU, not sure if that would be big enough for said hard drives though.
Looks amazing, like always
...I attempted to boot up the Asus DSGC-DW board (The one with the PCIx16 slot) but it would not boot. I'm afraid that that particular motherboard has gone bad...
Thanks - I think that you are correct, that there are basically no video cards that can max the x16 lanes anywaysLooking good, from what i remember reading you can put any card in an x8 aside from the dual gpu cards and won't see any performance degradation. But i could be wrong
Interesting... I would like to do ~something~ with the board and dual cpu's, so I'll have to look into that. Thanks for the idea!things are moving along. understand wanting to get out in the warm months.
regarding the 'cactus' MB, if all else fails, bake it!
there was a thread here on [H] on cooking dead PCB's to revive them. think is was in the 'video card' sub forum.
give it a try, if it works, great. if it doesn't, who gives a shit, it was a borked freebie anyway.
lol, thanks mannymanKeep on going and you will prevail. Also pet your kittens for me lol.
Hehe, thanks for the tip haunter(Zargon!), I'll keep that in mind!if the fan vibration is too much, o-rings will help and are really cheap, or buy some rubber gasket from the plumbing section of the hardware store
(I am zargon on anandtech btw )
Thanks NicaDeli!Nice work.
Thanks!Looking good!
Thanks!!its coming together nicely and looks amazing! I love the stain color.
With the sata cables, you might be able to make one long continuous one. On my cables, the 'back' of the connector pops off, then you can pull the wires out and reposition them. There are small metal barbs that cut into the insulation to connect to the copper inside. Or I have a feeling you can get make-your-own kits. I had no idea you could do this until I saw the PC in xbox case mod a guy did a few months back where he does that. Thanks!
Thanks!!
Wow, with all those SATA cables there, it sure messes things up, no?
I went ahead and threw in my current video card (Radeon HD5770, which kicks some pretty decent butt still). I'm sure I'll see an improvement from my P4 3.2!!!
And here's the magical moment. It looks like it's already been tweaked around a bit. Running at 3.2Ghz instead of 2.8Ghz, RAM speed up to 1600Mhz... Hey - nice temps! That's only a few degrees over ambient! (It's chilly in the basement)
Only one major problem with this setup... Can you see what it might be? (Well, ok, there's more than one thing not "ideal")
That might cause an issue. I also don't like the way the heatsink exhausts all of its hot air directly onto the back of the video card, so off to the local computer shop!
This should do the trick:
Much better. Fits almost like it was meant to be.
Looks real good there actually. I think the wide fin spacing will be an advantage as well, since there is going to be a lot of general air flow throughout the cabinet.
Wow - thanks a lot for that post, that kind of cabling detail I think is phenomenal. I will most likely try to get as much big stuff done with this project (ie. get both systems up and running) and will then go back and look at making the cabling situation much more customized. Thanks for the link again.Regarding the cable clutter, I seem to remember a worklog here a few years ago (was it one of mashie's?, Ah, no it was PS-RagE) with a pile of hard drives. For the power connectors, he just ran the red/yellow/black wires straight vertically from one drive to the next, through the right-angle power connectors, rather than sleeving each one and having it loop behind the drive, as you have it. It looked really nice and clean. Just a thought, since you already have the right-angle connectors. The post with pics is here.
Close - the heatsink is actually venting outwards, not pushing inwards, so it needs an exhaust holeLooking good so far, are you going to cut a vent on that sidepanel over the heatsink so it can receive fresh air?
Thanks - yes, the Rasetsu has me impressed so far. It works as well as the Coolermaster Hyper 212 did with 2 fans, so far (I think the air flow in the case + wide fin spacing is giving the Rasetsu a big help)very nice work so far.
i bought a Rasetsu as well, because my sidepanel won't fit on again with a tower cooler.
Thanks rorymitch - like the link above from ballistic - I will certainly consider doing some custom cabling in the near future.
Beautiful job with the desk. Might knock up a desk of my own, but will be nowhere near this attention to detail. Top effort
Good ideas, thanks. I'd like to get some black or brass coloured wire mesh some timecould try covering with speaker cloth or mosquito net or some thing,
Thanks - if you check the original sketches, plenty of thought went into it, but yes, there were certainly some things that were missed. Mainly, how large some of the connectors are, and how easily things would be installed and removed (ie. HDD's)Nice desk but doesn't seem alot of thought went into the actual layout of it in regards to the PC before building.
