30" IPS off-angle glow... head-on

I recently acquired a pair of DS-305W monitors (long story; I'll share, but another time). From what I've read, they're likely either newer S-IPS, or H-IPS panels but I'm not sure how to determine which. The vendor says S-IPS, so I guess we can go with that. On to the problem...

With a black background, I see the dreaded IPS glow everywhere but in the center and top most portions of the screen. After a bit of searching, I see that this can be related to the lack of an A-TW polarizer. Coming from the DS-265W (which, according to these forums, DOES have the polarizer), this was a big change.

So, my questions to you are these:

Is this normal ("this" being purely subjective at this point -- I'll upload a picture or two later)? It seems like quite a bit of "glow" to see while looking directly at the screen. I don't notice any sort of discoloration on- or off-angle, though. Also, while playing a game (starcraft II) I didn't really notice the glow, but when editing code in multiple black windows with bits of grey text, I do...

Also, if it is normal, do you get used to it? I love the bonus pixels and bigger screen size. The colors are beautiful, and mine had absolutely no dead pixels. I'd hate to send them back and can definitely give it time, but I wanted to judge from the discord in the hive whether I should even try.

This is LCD glow you would see (to some degree) on any monitor without A-TW, especially on the larger ones.
Unlike other technologies, *PS does not distort colors.
That's why you have your "The colors are beautiful".
This is normal. Relax and enjoy.

there are many users who never get used to it
maybe keep it a few days if you still have enough time to return it

If any screen should have had A-TW, it is 30" IPS, but AFAIK, none has had it.

I think 30" is too big for an IPS monitor (for many people). I had for a while and glow is quite obvious. It doesn't help that pitch is small so you want to sit close. The closer you sit, the stronger the angle and the glow.

When I was using one I switched to a lighter wallpaper so the glow would be less noticeable.

Thanks for the input so far. I might be understanding the problem -- here are some pics to illustrate what I'm talking about.

First, the lagom.nl viewing angle test on the 30":

Next, a black screen, taken head-on (white specs added post-imgur procesing):

Finally, a comparison viewing angle test from my DS-265W (oops -- forgot to move the cursor):

Make sure you're not confusing "IPS Glow" with normal backlight bleed.

I should have taken a few more. The black screen is taken head-on. When looking from an angle, the light areas move as seen on the various youtube videos of the glow phenomena. That specific pic was to address my curiosity as to whether there should be that much "glow" from about 2.5 feet.

I've owned both the Dell 3007WFP-HC(IPS) and the Samsung 305T(PVA) and put them to the test side by side for two months.

Yes the IPS "Glow" is normal, but trust me when I say IMO that the glow is MUCH better then the colour shifting I saw even straight on with the PVA screen. The PVA screen has BEAUTIFUL BLACKS and the external build quality was higher than that of the Dell(IMO), but the colour shifting and input lagleft much to be desired. Suffice it to say I kept the Dell and sold the Samsung at 2/3 the price I paid.

If it bothers you, return it, but otherwise don't worry, it's not a defect. Its unfortunate that no one uses an A-TW in any 30" IPS monitor

ohh.h...... there are. Just not at an acceptable price. Start looking at 3x the price of the U3011h.

Could someone (or multiple someone's) with 30" panels upload / link pics from the same tests? (that is, a completely black screen, taken head-on, and a viewing-angle test from lagom.nl) I'd love to compare results here.

I will do so when I get the time to. I don't have localized bright regions of backlight, although I do have the glow in a more uniform distribution. Seems like it's just the backlight bleed through is different with different manufacturers.

It looks to me like the gamma may be off on your monitors, among other things. Have you calibrated?

IPS glow is when the panel permits light to filter though when viewed from an angle. When you move your head around in front of the screen, the angle will change -- the area in front of your face should always have higher contrast than that seen through your peripheral vision. Does this happen with those panels? If not, it may be backlight bleed, which is a build quality problem more than inherent to the technology.

...OK, I may have stolen that picture, but my LP3065 looks exactly the same.

Definitely not backlight bleed either. Line your head up with a corner and it's as black as the center. From 3m away, the light patches are completely gone.

Haha. Yeah, looks somewhat familiar. ;)

Exactly -- but at a distance of 3m I find it difficult to you know... read what's on the screen at that size.

Regarding the head-on contrast vs side, yes, this does happen. It mirrors the IPS glow effect that I've seen on youtube and describe here.

However... regarding the calibration... no, I've not calibrated it. Not exactly sure how to, TBH. The only built-in adjustment is backlight control. I twiddled the gamma controls in the catalyst control center by a few points (up), ++'d the contrast by 2 and decreased the brightness by 1 and the viewing angle test from lagom.nl seems much better!

There does seem to be a "bright" spot towards the top center of the monitor, regardless of setting, which I'm guessing is more related to the build of the monitor.

I guess I'll just try it for a while and see if I can get used to the off-angle glow. Thanks again for the input! (And if anyone decides to upload pics of their 30" IPS monitors showing normal glow phenomena, I'd still be very interested to check it out.)
