Many of these comments relate to game mechanics, not game content. The underlying game mechanics won't change with the game mode or the additional of more vehicles, 64 players, etc.

This game has been marketed for some time as a hybrid between the two games, not some ground up re-imagining of BF2. Hence my point regarding the engine itself. It's BF2 layered over BC2. How is it not going to feel more like the latter? My gut tells me that once we see some of those features from BF2 start to shine through on other maps / modes, it'll be a little easier to swallow.

Look, I would love to see a true evolution of BF2, but it's a 4 year old game. DICE would have to be brain dead to completely alienate an existing user-base for BC2 just to appease people who loved BF2.

And I think it's important that BF2 fans know what is going on and what to expect as we learn more about BF3. Expected or not, we need to know to what degree factors x, y, and z affect the game feel and experience.

Personally, I think it's stupid to cater to the BC2 crowd seeing as how BC isn't a BF proper game, but rather a spin off of the proper series. IMO, they should be developed separate and for different crowds. Factoring in business sense, sure, it makes more sense cater to both as you'll have more customers. I'm a BF fan though, not a market strategist or business development manager.

P.S. BF2 is actually a bit over 6 years old now (released June of 2005). ;)

OK..who is going to start the "I told you so" thread. BF3 is going to be the Obama of video games- all that promised hope but it is going to end up giving in to the Tea Party (I mean console) nuts. LOL

lol M60, not even close anymore. The CG is still better than every other explosive weapon at killing infantry but it's come a long way from where it was at release. I fondly remember triple kill sniping people on the other side of the map with it.

I played BC2 for a few weeks after launch before I got completely pissed off at the hit detection for slug shotties and knives (fucking broke doesn't even begin to describe how garbage the hit detection is in BC2).

For shits and giggles I had a clanmate go on the otherside of Panama from me and I killed him on my second CG round (first one missed high by a few feet)

Yeah, I was that guy. CG + 870 with magnum+slug. Hot Carl-ing 4 lyfe, yo

I never had a problem with hit detection in BC2.

You couldn't have played much then, seriously the hit detection sucks. It's a bit better now than at launch but still it's shit. I have over 200 hours in BC2 and I can see it easily. I'm sure there are people here that have way way more hours logged then I and they can chime in.

I'm expecting more of the same, but bring it on anyway. "Let's Get On With The Killing"

i play a lot of cqc sniper in bc2 and there is nothing that makes me more mad than hitting someone in the head, seeing blood shoot out, but the hit didnt register and he is still running around shooting at me...

back to alpha -
I'm actually surprised at how much fun I had with it considering I hate rush mode with a passion. I've probably played a total of 3 rounds of rush in bc2. I really like the movement in bf3. All the other BF games have felt kind of clunky to me, but bf3 felt really fluid.

The thing that will make or break the game for me is flight characteristics of helecopters mostly. Flying in bf2 was one of my favorite things to do and in bc2 ive probably flown a total of 6 times. It feels like trying to fly an elephant and joystick mapping is so broken.

Rush mode made it's appearance in BF2142 if I remember correctly..

the only reason we got version 2 of the alpha was because of a few things that my pbbans partner and I found that had to be removed and they wanted to encrypt the ini file that we had edited, funny tho they left our edits in it, which was nice..

more people got to play that way..

Now that the Alpha trial is over, is there any reason to keep BF3 installed?

Not sure if I'm even going to keep Origin installed now that the trial is over.

I honestly don't even know why this is a problem for some people. Have you played infantry in BF2 lately? It's almost a nightmare going from modern games back to it. One of the biggest improvements made to the series is actually making infantry fun to play, but apparently this isn't a good thing.

I want to know what exactly you want back from BF2 that would improve upon BC2. Stuff that would make BF3 a game that is more fun to play, not realism arguments (irrelevant in a game that isn't trying to be authentic) or "it was harder back then!".

Yes, I have played BF2 recently and there are definitely some problems with it, but overall I enjoy the feel more than I enjoy the feel of these modern shooters.

I'm not going to go in depth in what I personally wanted. I will say that your attempt to preempt my argument is kinda funny. I've made very large posts that go well beyond the generic arguments for the feel of the game that I like, but I'm not going to do that again here. Overall, regardless of whether realism supports my argument or not, I think guns should be harder to shoot accurately when using a mouse/keyboard. I think a game that feels kinda like pointing a laser beam at someone removes several aspects of a shooter that were fun, challenging and rewarding to master.

That's just a summary of what I think about one thing, so don't take it as my complete argument.

I think thats a fantastic point, and one of the reasons I have fell in love with World of Tanks. Your shots don't always land perfectly as there is room for error, based on your crew's skill, and many other factors. It makes playing much more challenging IMO.

Quick question about Origin, is it like Steam in the sense that you get nearly unlimited installs? My brothers PC isnt good enough to play BF3 but if he was to buy BF3, make a Origin account and sign into it on my second PC, he could. Then when he got a good enough PC, he could put Origin on it, and DL & install BF3 on it and play it just fine? I cant find a good FAQ on the Origin account that answers my questions.

It depends on the game. Some games have limited amount of installs before you have to deactivate a machine in order to re-activate the game on another machine. BC2 is one of those games so I think it is safe to assume that BF3 will be as well.

Even at the alpha stage, the game is mostly complete, hence why I'm rather pessimistic about the game drastically changing. Tweaked? Sure. Overhauled to make it more like BF2 than BC2? Very unlikely this late in development.

Regardless of the teamwork aspects, the game engine mechanics are implemented and that is what I'm judging from. I'm certainly not saying "Hey the game is missing helicopters from the alpha therefore it sucks" (replace helicopters with $something-else).

Maybe a year or so ago, yes. When IO gameplay was released, I almost exclusively switched to that mode of gameplay, with some breaks to play Sharqi for helicopter awesomeness. It wasn't much of a problem back then, but in my last experience with BF2, IO in Karkand had devolved into a nade-fest. Granted, if the game were still current (in EA's eyes), I'm sure something could be done about this.

A few things I'd like to see carried over into BF3:

  • Commander!!!
  • Higher (perceived maybe at this point?) damage from weapons. I didn't play the alpha enough to really try to make an estimate on weapon damage models so this may just be my mind playing tricks on me.
  • Knifing required work as opposed to being an insta-kill.
  • Lack of earned accessories (medics have the med pack at start for crying out loud). This isn't Call of Duty so stop trying to copy it.
  • No 3d spotting!!!
  • Lack of arcade mode, I mean, not-hardcore mode.
  • You can only spawn on only your squad leader and the squad leader must respawn at a captured point (or the team base). I believe the squad leader can spawn on anybody in the squad and members only on the squad leader in BF3? Squads were broken/not-fully-implemented in the alpha, but I'm 100% confident I'm going to take issue with this in release.
  • Old school scoring system and no pop up on screen. Seeing "+100 enemy down" pop up totally kills immersion for me. And why +100 instead of +1?! Minor gripe, I know, but still...

There are definitely things I liked about the alpha more than BF2, though I do have plenty of criticisms to match them.

To everyone else who keeps crying page in and page out of this thread:
I will buy BF3 because I love the series and love having fun playing them no matter what has changed. I don't care if people think BF3 is BC3... all I care is that it is true to what BF is at it's core and if you really need an explanation on what that is you are either delusional, oblivious, or just plain ignorant. I have faith in DICE. So please, shut up, buy the game, have fun, and if you're still mad... go outside.

That logic makes sense. Doesn't seem to be a problem though, not only would i need just 2 installs (my second PC then my brothers new PC) but even if i did do it too many times, you can just de-authorize and re-authorize. Its a extra step but you get the same result. Thanks good to know.

If you pre-order on Origin i presume your getting the Limited Edition that comes with the "Back to Karkand" expansion pack right?

I assume this is at least partially directed at me, even though I kinda got dragged into discussing what I think are negatives.

You have to expect threads like these to contain both people excited about what the game is, and people who are disappointed in what the game is (and excited about what the game could have been, or else they just wouldnt care). If you're excited about a game, then don't let the disappointed people affect you. They just wanted something different, and if you didn't, it doesn't matter. Either way, I don't think advising us to shut up and go outside is very constructive or helpful.

I agree, but I think it's wrong to assume that just because it differs from traditional BF2 standards, it is therefore a "negative" aspect of the new game.

It's always about catering to the largest audience possible. In the end it's a trade off: You lose some of your favorite features (on both sides of the fence) but in return you're treated to a larger user base, and therefore better support and likely more expansion down the line. I agree that it's unfortunate that the game is a hybrid, but I feel like it's unnecessary to paint the game in a poor light because if it.

Man, I can't believe it's that old already.

Nope, there was no pure Rush mode in 20142. There were Conquest maps where all flags were taken by one team from the begining. It kind of Rush mode BUT the ability to take back conquested flags was a great fun. In BC2 Rush mode once objective is destroyed it is destroyed forewer.

im prob one of the biggest BF2 fanboys youll find, and i love BF3 so far. only thing that is lame atm was the 3d spotting really ruins it.

Not true. Knife up close from the side or front has your soldier punch your target in the face and then knife them.

then it's a bug, knives aren't supposed to kill in 1 shot from the front. it's dev confirmed and i've had knife fights before, you take multiple hits to the front.

you don't get dog tags if you kill someone from the front. have to creep up.

@DK0390 Can't block it but it's not instant death either. Knife fights are quite fun in bf3.

@SantaC2 No you can't block a stab but you can only get 1 shot knifed from behind.

Dfic Jeremias

What about you and everyone else's dialogue in your same boat is constructive? All you guys do is whine about how upset you are that you had explicit expectations that were suddenly crushed? I don't know but if you ask me expectations like that are foolish. Also, I expect a certain amount of discomfort amongst the people in regards to games like this. With enough of the human element and the perfect anonymous confessional soapbox to stand upon, anyone will cry foul. After pages and pages of people hating and (not even loving but, sadly) defending the game I just had to say something cause it just continues on like a broken record.

erm, not really.

Agreed. I can see how it's like S&D but Rush is more like a bigger playground with linear progression.

Conquest is the shit because it's known for it's massive maps and freedom of choice in where you want to attack.

How is praising the game constructive? I don't think the purpose of this forum is to get changes made to any of the games we're discussing. The only way that's going to happen if the internets as a whole rises up for or against a particular feature. We're both just here to give our opinions on the game. I understand that some of the complaints get repetitive, but the main reason for that is people who like the game feel the need to defend it, and then it turns into a debate about which opinion is right, and that rarely ends in both sides agreeing. It's a hard cycle to break and that's why when I post something negative I try and make it clear that it's just my opinion.

YOU ARE NOT ALLOWED TO HAVE OPINIONS. MY OPINION IS ALL THAT MATTERS. I WILL TELL YOU HOW TO THINK. YOU ARE MINDLESS AUTOMATONS. OBEY. OBEY.

Fixed.

Battlefield 3 gets stealthy with brutal knife kills and upgraded dog tag system | PC Gamer

:bang:
Each tag can be customised with a selection of designs, and engraved with a stat of the player’s choice.

Your dog tag is your personal business card in Battlefield 3 – it’s what you dangle in front of an enemy you’ve taken down, and you can also collect the dog tags from your enemies as trophies, adding an extra bit of bragging rights to the festivities.

This was also news on the official BF blog.

http://blogs.battlefield.ea.com/bat...07/28/battleblog-4-up-close-and-personal.aspx

Couple new posts since then too.

Not installing their crappy software unless I absolutely have to. Beta or not.

Origin is new and isn't entirely that bad compared to what EA had before but for posterity I'd rather use Steam. I can deal though.
