27" NEC MultiSync PA271W 6ms

These can be used for gaming (not the fastest but you barely notice lag) and ofcourse very good for work.
If however quality isn't your main concern, you might want to look in the direction of bigger screens like 30" wich is quite a diffirence compared to 27".
Just give us some more information on your requirements (and the CPU-GPU you allready own) to give us an idea what monitors suits you best.

The best monitor you can get for 1500usd is likely the Dell U3011. I'm an U2711 user myself, mostly work, rarely gaming (if so, it would be Starcraft 2).

Not entirely correct although I see your point.
You call a monitor around 1500$ the best monitor he can get for that price and quality wise this is true.
But keep in mind that he uses it both for work AND gaming so it might be better if he picked a cheaper, faster responsive monitor for all around work.

The Dell's are good for slower games such as starcraft but not for heavy duty FPS or advanced RPG like dragonage 2 in wich he'd notice some ghosting.

If he uses it for both I suggest that he waits a little longer since around 3 monitors will be released this month wich might suit his needs.

But let us wait on what he has to say about which VGA card & processor he owns + what he's gona use it for, to give us an idea on what monitor he realy requires.

ah, true, however, it should be noted a 30ms input latency, at 60FPS, would be equivilent to two frames, I mean, consoles and large TVs have much more input latency than that... As for SC2... depends on which league one is in :D many pro scbw/SC2 leauges in Korea still use CRT monitors  and it's purely due to input latency, lol...

as for ghosting, I'm not noticing much in Portal 2 (admittedly, I only played 19mins of it so far, so says Steam), vs my U2311h. Like... I can feel something is different, but I cannot pinpoint it. I'm blaming it on my GPU, but your input latency and ghosting points are making me rethink that :(

Input latency and ghosting are hardly noticable on my U3011 playing Rift. I did say "hardly" because yes, it is slightly noticeable over my previous monitor. Would I get this monitor for gaming based on it, heck yes. The 30 inch display is amazing for gaming. The colors and extra screen size really allow for increased immersion.

One of the other misconceptions people toss around on this board is that you will need more than one graphics card to run this beast. Not even remotely true. Due to the consolitus of most games these days, my GTX 580 runs most recent games at 40 to 60 frames per second with all options on. (Crysis 2, Dragon Age 2, Rift, and Dead Space 2,Portal 2) are games I am playing now at max resolution. Heck Dead space 2 doesn't even cause the graphics card to get above 60 degress C.

In my experience, if the monitor will be used mostly for work, the U3011 will be a significantly better display than the U2711. The extra vertical resolution (along with the 16:10 aspect ratio) is very useful. Avoid 16:9 monitors for work if you can, they're less than optimal since you will often find yourself having to adjust your workflow and window/panel arrangement to compensate. Also, fast response times are simply not necessary for work.

I use both in a triple monitor setup, with the U3011 as the center monitor. If you have any questions about either model, feel free to ask.

The Dell's are good for slower games such as starcraft but not for heavy duty FPS or advanced RPG like dragonage 2 in wich he'd notice some ghosting.

Have you actually used the U2711 or U3011? For what it's worth, my experience is similar to txfeinbergs', it is hardly noticeable on either my U2711 or U3011.

I'd go for the NEC PA271W, or if you can swing it, the NECPA301W. Keep in mind these are wide-gamut monitors.

I must admit my findings are based on professional testing bureau's (like CNET for example) and not my own experience since I am still looking for a replacement myself (affordable).

Gambler, can you answer this question?

Percentagewise, how would you use your monitor the most? (example 30% for gaming 30% for work 60% for movies)
If you answer this then maybe we could give more examples wich might save you some money without the cost of quality.
I see no point for you to buy an expensive monitor that might not fully suit your needs when you might find a better alternative for less money wich to me is a big success.
So answer this question and we might help you further until you are persuaded/convinced/satisfied.

professional testing bureau's (like CNET for example)

That is you first mistake. CNET is a professional, but not enthusiast. There is a huge difference. I trust a good Amazon user review over any CNET review any day, i'm saying that's just to illustrate my point. CNET is more of a casual consumer. Here you have to look at sites like TFTCentral, Behardware, Anandtech, [H]ardOCP (naturally), even Tom's works.

I have found that some recent Amazon reviewers have gotten to enthusiast levels, i dont know if people share that point of view?

But back to OP. I have no direct experience with sizes that big, but one thing that was already pointed out is if you want wide-gamut displays or not. From what I have read, you might want to just go for RGB color, and not wide-gamut. If you do any DSLR photography, then this holds especially true since wide-gamut distorts photographs.

The issue with wide-gamut color can be addressed to some point with calibration, though going with a standard gamut monitor makes it easier.

Personally I don't consider CNET a "professional testing bureau", rather they're a consumer level review site. I would much rather go with a review from Flat Panels HD or TFTcentral

He MIGHT notice some ghosting. I've played on slow LCDs since their inception and still don't notice ghosting.

thank you guys for examples , some ppls ask which PC i have so here we go :
i5 760 2.800ghz 4x
4gb
GTX470 1280mb

Another vote for the U3011 - though you're going to have a heck of a time pushing those pixels with just a 470. I bought a 3011 on sale for about $1000 with tax and the lot. I'd say snag a deal on one of those, sell your 470 and buy a 6990 or similar and you'll be happy

There's no need to start another silly debate in another mans topic. So you know more details then me, good for you. And I would appreciate it even more if you turn that into making it good for the person that needs our help right now :)

Wouldn't that make him go over his budget? I mean.. a HD6990 is VERY expensive and it might cause him to be unable to buy a descent monitor that actualy supports this card to it's full capacity.

Can someone clarify wether his CPU will bottleneck his GPU or not since I myself am not up to date on how you can tell.
Wouldn't want him paying much for something that wouldn't be used for at least 80%.

I'm being optimistic and saying he can get the 3011 for a grand and spend the rest of the budget on a GPU upgrade. Regardless of how you look at it any monitor upgrade is going to make his overall gaming experience worse given the frame-rates that he'll get. I'm not so current on the prices but all I'm saying is make sure not to overlook the gpu!

The HP ZR30w is a better gaming monitor than the Dell U3011 due to having less input lag. I have one myself and it is fantastic. I highly recommend this monitor if you can do without the OSD and internal scaler.
