Eizo Foris FS2331

More like 3000:1, some are talking about 4000:1 but I think 3100:1 is the max he can do.

Here, from the manual

"Contrast ratio 3000:1 (when ContrastEnhancer setting is “On” 10000:1)"

Hope this helps.

I get that's from the manual but PRAD managed to get 7,000:1 with calibration, I'm just wondering if anybody managed to get that number.

Who cares about numbers, it what it looks like that counts :)

As mentioned, the Benq V2400W has better number than my G520 CRT but it looks terrible next to it.

Troll.

He likes to post stuff from the original F2380 which has black crush out of the box and troll any VA related thread which he received a vacation for last year. None of the newer C-PVA models have this.

Translate this review or read any other reivew of the Eizo models to find this information.

Look at his earlier attempt to troll in the IPS glow thead:

cpvaglow.jpg

As you can see below this result is now where near reality. Obviously some one was having fun cranking the monitors settings, cameras exposure and playing with photoshop.

Reality:

Samsung F2380MX @120cdm/2

Extra Hardware CZ Eizo EV2333 and F2380M @ 120cdm/2

PRAD EV2333 backlight

Check PRAD's review of the EV2333 or FlatPanelsHD EV2333/Foris FS2331

Sailor Moon from PRAD actually confired that it's wrong here

Contrast ratio is still 3,000:1 across the board on most of the C-PVA panels at any given luminance.

Extra Hardware gets 3,000:1 @120cdm/2 on both the EV2333 and F2380M.

I also got 3,000:1 @120cdm/2 on the F2380MX and the F2380 was 0.05cdm/2

Rather than trolling I used evidence.

Sailor Moon from PRAD actually confired that it's wrong here

Ah. I thought he was trolling when he said I was wrong. My mistake...

Seeing as how the contrast is truly similar with these monitors. This might be my choice for my new monitor, the non-detectable input-lag is a definite plus for me (from what I've read.)

I'll wait a month or two before making my decision. I'm tempted by high refresh rates but I feel like contrast is the most important thing there is to a monitor.

No he lives in his own little fantasy world.

Contrast doesn't matter....3,000:1 left 900:1 right.

Is that the same monitor (VW2420H) at the different Contrast Ratios?

Which image appears the most natural? My immediate impression was the one on the right but it appears the one on the left has a little more detail.

CRT's have excellent dynamic range, so when displaying a dark screen it will dim. It's the static contrast (as in measure the black value in the center of the screen that is poor), when viewing every day content and LCD will look better.

The V2400W has a poor black value accordint to DV, compare it here with the Samsung F2380M (same panel as the EV2333 but no overdrive)
http://www.digitalversus.com/duels.php?ty=6&ma1=48&mo1=365&p1=3386&ma2=36&mo2=571&p2=6293&ph=13

In the [H] Review I believe he is talking aobut minimum luminance. No TN panel can do 0.09cdm/2 black when calibrated to 140cdm/2. He later says the native contrast ratio is 900:1@135cdm/2 luminance=0.15 black which can also be seen here with the BasiCColor Validation Results.

The [H] reviewer did an excellent job, it is very rare that any site beats DV in terms of getting good calibration results

hmm but My old Mitsub DiamondPro 900u had much deeper blacks than any LCD i've ever had, really dark scenes in a dark room looked better but in a bright room or in brighter scenes the LCDs have a lot more pop

Thanks Guys...

I've ended up looking at the EIZO Foris FX2431 looks fantastic and a steal at £912 with free delivery in the UK, I want one!

it's not bad at all i wonder if the NEC PA241 isnt maybe a touch better though

FX2431 is essentially Dell 2408.
24" 1920x1200 PVA with colorshift and wide gamut issues.
Dell 2408 is worth ~$550. Add $100 for the style and $50 for the brand.
$700 is a max acceptable price for such a monitor.

don't forget it has an insanely better color engine than the 2408 and a proper sRGB emulation mode (that is better than basically any sRGB only monitor)

a few HDTV do seem to get to 4000-6000:1 CR now

There is no indication that FX2431 "better color engine" produces better colors, and no evidence of "proper" sRGB emulation.

Hmmm, still waiting for my Eizo Foris, but according to tracking information, it arrived at my country a few days ago, so I should get it on Monday/Tuesday this week.

Lucky I did order it when I did, since the price is back up to 450 Euros on that German website :)

Anyway my Sony G520 Trinitron CRT still works from time to time, it sorta flickers a bit and goes blank, but if i turn it back off and on, sometimes it wakes up and stays good for hours. All very random, I suspect a solder point has cracked. Still I can get it to work once in a while so I can compare it to the Eizo Foris. And I do have my 17 inch Sony E200, a lower quality Trinitron display, not as bight and sharp, but it's fine for movies, just a bit small.

I also scored a very cheap Lacie Electron Blue IV 22 inch aperture grill monitor! Like under $50
This uses Mitsubishi's version of the Trinitron tech, high end CRT and they cost a fortune back in the day. Comes with a hood, and will be here in the next few days as well. I've always wondered how these high end NEC, Mitsubishi and Lacie monitors looked versus the Sony's, so now is my chance to compare.

I will save this for PC/PS2 gaming and keep the Eizo Foris for the PS3, desktop, surfing and 3D graphics work etc. My mistake before with the G520, was to use it for everything and for long hours around the clock. I should have bought an LCD for web surfing and everyday mundane use, to minimise wear and tear on it... Well it did only cost me under $100 so I guess I can't complain, but I could have extended it's useful life for a few more years this way.

It has dual inputs, like my G520 so I'll be able to do some side by side comparisons, once calibrated.
It was used for colour-matching videos and artwork by the previous owner.

The case is actually black, instead of blue
Might be made in 2005

I guess now would be a good time to order in a 570GTX to replace my borrowed ATI 4670 to allow my i7 930 @ 4GHZ system to breath properly :)

CoolColJ I'm looking forward to read you impressions about the Eizo...

I'm stuck with a CRT at the moment: 21 inch Hitachi CM813ET plus (shadow mask, not flat nothing special) I got... well... for free (the price of a coffee, actually, that is 1 euro)! The owner was so happy to get rid of it I thought he was gonna pay me!
And to be honest I am really enjoying it, great blacks, good contrast, fast, resposive... it can do 1920x1440 @ 76 hz but I cannot make that resolution appear in games...

Looks a bit curved :)

Get yourself an aperture grill CRT monitor and you'll be smiling!
So much easier on the eyes, and much better colours.

Still no sign of the Eizo Foris FS2331....

I just picked up the Lacie Electron Blue IV, and it's in great shape as far as the image goes. Geometry is decent too.

And with my Sony G520 deciding to work straight away for some reason, I am able to calibrate both together, 9K, 2.2 Gama. I don't like using 6500 like everyone does, to me it makes white look brown.....
With the Sony set to "Professional" on the brightness/contrast setting, both monitors look about the same. They both have the smooth, grainless, and organic look of a high end aperture grill display

Lacie has dual VGA ports, while I'm using a BNC connection with the Sony G520, but I see no major difference.

The text is a bit sharper on the Lacie though. So I am able to use 1 screen res higher if I wanted too. I usually use 1280x960@85-100 hertz, but 1360x1024@85 hertz is usuable on the Lacie without everything feeling to small and blurred, even 1600x1200@85hertz is not bad as well. Which is something I wouldn't like on the G520.
Corner focus is a little softer on the lacie.

When the G520 is set to Standard mode, it's a little bighter and more saturated, but setting the Superbright mode on the Lacie to "mode 1 picture" makes it brighter still, and Dynamic on the G520 is even brighter again, which the Movie mode on the Lacie matches :)

Both monitors have the nice semi-gloss coating where you can barely see your reflection, unlike the Dell Trinitrons which are highly reflective!

JAG1I.jpg

The brightness differences between the G520 and Lacie Electron Blue 4 have really bothered me.

G520 on standard = 114 cd/m2 with brightness at 55 and contrast at max.
EB4 = 88cd/m2 with brightness at 20, contrast at max

But I finally figured how to make it match the Sony!
Use the no. 5 colour preset and set it to 9000k custom white balance, and that sets red to 80.5, green and blue relative to that. Now bump red to 90.5 and bump up the green and blue as they should be with the calibrator to guide.

Problem solved - the Lacie can now do 115-120 cd/m2 :)
In fact the white looks a lot cleaner and brighter, better purity, even better than the G520's worn out tube.
I don't think this Lacie has been used a lot, even though it was made in 2003

Very happy now. I didn't think the Lacie was bigger than the G520, since I didn't measure that much more diagonal size, but the overall image is larger, probably why text looks sharper :D

Hi Col,

Has the new monitor arrived yet?

Thanks,

No

according to the delivery tracking

13.01.11 16:13 The instruction data for this shipment have been provided by the sender to DHL electronically
14.01.11 16:56 The international shipment has been processed in the export parcel center
29.01.11 02:23 The shipment is being transported to the destination country

:(
I misread it the first time, I thought it was already in my country.
I must have chose the slowest shipping option, but at 100 Euros, I expected air mail, it looks like snail pace shipping,,,,,,

Gees it spent 2 weeks at DHL, before it even started moving

It finally arrived, last week, I better get it this week....

The monitor finally came in an hour ago!

Anyway I have it setup beside my Lacie Electron blue IV 22 inch CRT.
It's much wider off course, but smaller vertical size wise... I wish it was a tad larger.

Booting up with the BIOS screen the black levels and contrast match my Lacie!
Infact black levels are a little better....Black is really black

The Eizo stretches the Bios screen though. None of the settings allowed me to view it 1:1.
The Windows 7 boot screen was scaled up and looked a bit horrible
Now there is a bit of hard edge grainey look I have to get used to, which CRT don't have, but the Lacie also looks a lot blurrier with text as a result, softer appearance.

My Lacie is calibrated off course, to 2.2 gamma and 115 cd/m2 brightness with a colour balance of 8500k.
The Eizo looks just about the same when set to brightness of 48, so 50 must be 120 cd/m2 and colour balance to 8500k. Colours match very closely when viewing pics.
And everything else left stock, so no need for me to calibrate it just yet - nice :)

Now there is ghosting when I move and scroll things around but actually a bit better than the so called 2ms Benq V2400W I had before. Mouse movement looks the same as on the Lacie.

When I move my head around I can see some gamma shifting, but not as bad as TN monitors. The screen is pretty much matte, so no annoying reflections.

I'll write some more and snap some pics when I get some more hours in and try some games and movies etc.
No dead pixels, backlight bleed or other issues - nice

I was going to post last time saying I could already feel your rage if after a month of waiting, your Eizo had dead pixels or backlight bleed, but I decided not to as I didn't want to jinx you :p

I wish I could afford an Eizo, looking forward to seeing your impressions/photos.

Sometimes you do get what you pay for :)

I could have got a Dell and just forget about it, but I'm pretty fussy. And contrast/black levels are really important to me and I'm satisfed in this regard.
Now in a pitch black room the Eizo is not as black as my Lacie, during the day it is.
When viewing a small pic, with the rest of the screen as black there appears to be lighter shade in the bottom corners. I don't think it's light bleed but a gamma shift.
If there is decent area of white in there, then they look about the same contrast and black levels wise.

This is with everything stock and brightness at 50. I haven't tried bumping contrast to maximum and adjusting other stuff. There is black level setting, default at 50/100, but it doesn't appear to make the screen any darker as far as zero black level goes.

You need the remote to access all the settings and adjustments, which is a bit of pain. Don't loose the remote!

The speakers are pretty crap, sounds like a telephone.

Each input can have it's own colour mode.
I tried my PS3 vida HDMI and it looks gorgeous! I used User2 setting slot (User1 for the PC)
It didn't look as saturated as my G520 with my PS3, so I bumped saturation up to 15 from zero. After that it looks superb using full RGB setting on the PS3.
Game mode has too much sharpen artifacts so I won't be using it.

Can't say I notice any latency with overdrive set to max.
Watched Avatar and it looks just as good as my lacie. Both monitors looked very close.
The Lacie is a touch smoother perhaps with motion, hard to say.

Black crush? Can't say I notice any compared to my Lacie CRT, and it hasn't been calibrated at all.

I really wish this screen was 25-27 inch with the same resolution, it would be perfect for me. Writing is a bit small at native resolution.
Overscan can be turned on/off, in any of the size modes. Normal has black borders and is displayed 1:1, full screen stretches to fit (overscan on/off) and Enlarge keeps pixel aspect ratio and maxmises size to fit (overscan on/off).
Games and pics look fine with Enlarge screen mode, but text ends a bit funny looking. I have no issues with the image running games at smaller 4:3 resolutions and Enlarging it up, looks no worse than the Lacie
There is a smoothing setting for Enlarge mode, I set it to minimum and everything looks ok.

PS3 out through component into my Blackmagic Intensity Shuttle capture device, back out through HDMi into the Eizo, at 720p with Enlarge mode on looks great. I can't see any artifacts or blurring even though it's scaled up to 1080p
I did this with a VGA output feeding myLacie at the same time, and I can't discern any lag or much ghosting at all with overdrive on. If overdrive is off I can see ghosting.

edit - turning on clear type and increasing the the screen DPI to 115% and all is well again. Pretty pleased now, but software still runs pretty small

quick snap - Lacie CRT left, Eizo FS2331 right

Lacie CRT left, Eizo FS2331 right. I see the exact same things

The only thing I don't tike about this monitor is the gama shift you see on plain grey backgrounds. Gives a 3D effect to a flat colour. Not noticeable most of the time though in pics, games and movies etc. White is fine.

Pitch black room, - black holds up to the CRT :)

Calibration results

I have the monitor set at 2.2 gamma, 8000k, had to decrease the brightness from 48 to 46 to hit 120 cd/m2, and increase red by 1 unit from the 8000k value set in the Eizo's menus. LOL it hit a black level of zero, black is indeed black
The dark areas are a little darker now

great monitor but I prefer the S-PVA for the faster response, anyway great monitor.

Responce is fast enough for me as far as games and movies go

kinda tempted after reading your review
can you test if it can display a 72hz signal at its native res?

As we talked in another thread, thank you for honest attepts to bring more info about this monitor, but the colorimeter you use is not suitable for measurements.:(

Colorshift on Eizo Foris.

As I said sure, but even if it's out by 0.1 cd/cm2 it's still accurate enough to be in the ball park. My Lacie CRT only get as black level of 0.33+ cd/cm2 with the same sensor

You see the various reviews of the FS2331 say the black levels are under 0.1 cd/cm2 anyway

There is colour shift, I can see it, but for my uses it is not noticable most of the time. I only see it with a plain mid grey background. Shows as a sorta 3D effect. Some of it is also due the slight glow/muted matte reflection from the screen. White is fine, blacks is ok, just the mid greys.

kinda tempted after reading your review

It won't display a 72 hz signal from DVI, only from a VGA signal and only at 1024x768.
60 hz is the highest from memory

Analog Scanning Frequency (H, V) PC: 31 – 81 kHz, 55 – 76 Hz
Digital Scanning Frequency (H, V) PC: 31 – 68 kHz, 59 – 61 Hz (VGA Text: 69 – 71 Hz)

I am finding I can't stand looking at my CRT for desktop and web browsing anymore :)
My Lacie CRT only gets used pics and games now, it looks too blurry against the Eizo.
Although I find pics look smoother and more pleasing on the CRT, more organic, not as detailed, but the hard edge sharpness of LCD is not always desirable on flesh and faces

What about gaming on the Eizo? Is it good? Does scrolling webpages cause a lot of blurriness? The only VA panel I ever tried was the Benq EW2420 and it was a nightmare.
