Want to choose from one of these modular power supplies:

1) OCZ ModXStream Pro OCZ500MXSP 500W ($49.99 AR)
2) OCZ ModXStream Pro OCZ600MXSP 600W ($54.99 AR)
3) OCZ ModXStream Pro OCZ700MXSP 700W ($69.99 AR)

Seems like the 600W is a better value as its $more than the 500 BUT $15 less than the 700. All of them have a lot of reviews BUT the only reason im reluctant to get one is because:

(a) the Cables are short and almost everyone has complained about that
(b) OCZ are terrible with rebates, and most of the time the rebates is stolen?

Any feedback from peeps here?

They're all the same platform from Sirfa, not terrible but not particularly great or anything.

One thing that user reviews are good for is telling you how likely a company is to honor rebates... And all evidence I've heard is that you have about a one in ten chance of actually getting back a rebate from OCZ. So disregard it from your price considerations.

If you're dead set on these units, consider what you plan to run on it. If it's just a standard gaming system with a quad core and a single mid-to-high-end graphics card, the 500W will probably do. A 600W or 700W would only be needed for SLI/CFX.

If you're willing to spend the money on the MXS 700W then it might be worth it to consider, perhaps, the SeaSonic M12II 520W instead if you aren't planning on using dual GPUs; and the M12II is a lot closer in +12V capacity to the MXS 600W than it is to the 500W-- 2A short in fact.

No gaming on this PC, BUT i plan to overclock my i5 2500K to about 4.5 Ghz, and occasionally do photo shop and some basic video editing (once in a while)....

Assuming that i wont get a rebate should i go for the 500W or 600W? The only other thing i am worried about is that everyone is saying that the modular cables are SHORT! I have a Lian-Li ATX case...

Go for the 600W in that case.

If you're really worried about the short cables, then up your budget for a better modular PSU. Simple as that. Something like this will be fine:
$90 - Seasonic M12II 620 Bronze 620W PSU

My last 2 Power supplies were ANTEC and both of them died within 2 years. The Seasonic looks super clean BUT i had the TR2 RX 750W Modular Power Supply in mind for $89.99 (AR) from Microcenter,

It has a 5 year warranty and is cheaper then what NEWEGG have it listed for....

Do u think its a good deal?

Newer Antec units are much better than their older products. The failures you've had in the past really don't mean anything since their current product line is entirely different from what it used to be.

The Seasonic is a much better power supply than that Thermaltake. In fact, I wouldn't consider using the Thermaltake at all, since it's a fairly low-quality unit.

If you really want something modular, I recommend the lower-power version of the PSU Danny suggested: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817151093
Here are some alternative options:

Sorry for your bad luck.

No. It's not that good of a PSU. It's based on a very low quality HEC PSU design IIRC. Hell I'd recommend that OCZ 600W over a TR2 or non-Cougar HEC PSU anyday.

Well i want a Modular PSU. Secondly i'm trying to stay below $100 and comparing it to the OCZ i think its a better PSU because it has a 5 year warranty, chances of getting the $20 are more likely than from OCZ and there is no short cable issue thing.
Even if it does go bad within 5 years i can awlays RAM it.

[H] did a review of the OCZ ModXStream 700W and did not recommend it!

Yeah but the 600W did ok:

I still wouldn't get one but I would still rather have that than the TR2 RX.

Dude, if a PSU goes bad, there's a good chance that it can damage parts of the PC. As such, it does not matter if the warranty is long if it's gonna end up killing your PC anyway. The lower the quality of the PSU, the higher the chance of it killing PC parts when it dies. That TR2 PSU is a low quality PSU.

No matter how long the cables are, no matter how cheap it is, and no matter how long the warranty is, it still doesn't make sense to buy an infinitely crappy PSU when there's a significantly better alternative. I.e the Seasonic 620W PSU I mentioned earlier. It has a 5 year warranty, costs under $100, and is of infinitely better quality than the Thermaltake. Considering that the likelihood of that TR2 RX PSU actually reaching its rated wattage under real world conditions without going over ATX specs is pretty low, the higher wattage of the TR2 RX does not matter.

So I highly recommend the Seasonic.

The ModXStream and the TR2 RX are both pretty mediocre PSUs. Get the Seasonic I linked to earlier. You don't need more than 520W anyway.

I Have two 500w Modxstreams in systems and i have never had an issue, I have had them for about a year and a half. Some of the Cables are short, but they reach everything I have just fine. A Full tower case could run into some issues though.

BTW, I got both my rebates, about 3 months after i sent in everything.

I'm using the ModXstream Pro 700w and have done for over 2 years. running overclocked i7 920, 9Gb Ram, overclocked GTX470, it's solid.
So long as you don't live in a desert, i'd recommend it.

With the load that you're putting on that PSU, you might actually be killing your components (or put it this way, your CPU, memory, graphics card and possibly motherboard and hard drives might die a much-earlier-than-expected death). (Remember, the OCZ ModXStream Pro 700W flunked [H] testing above 550W to 600W.)

Yes i know what the review said, but that was at 40c ambient, which is ridiculously high and also doesn't give 230v results (I'm in the UK). My case is cool and the PSU is getting warm but not hot in the slightest when running about 525W (full load). Also the whole system is fully stable when under full load (CPU + GPU) for an hour and a half.
The PSU is fine and so are the components, however the fact everything is overclocked means it's going to degrade over time anywho, but i'd put a nice round £100 on it surviving another 2 years, which is pointless as i'm upgrading when LGA2011 is out.

XFX are great with rebates, and they also send you checks, not the debt card crap.
So far I've gotten both my XFX rebates, as well as 1/1 OCZ rebate(while we're counting).

Good choice on the XFX 650w. I have the same one. It's excellent for that price.

Ive ordered stuff worth $500+ for my new build and am expecting about $85 in rebates...

I hope i get the rebate :)
