I am still running on Q6600 and was looking forward to these new CPUs, but given how they compare to the 2008 cpus (namely the i7 920), I feel I'd be throwing money away...

Q: Are you skipping this one?
A: The poll we conducted concludes that:

87% of i7 enthusiasts are skipping
75% of i5 enthusiasts are skipping
45% of C2Q enthusiasts are skipping
15% of C2D enthusiasts are skipping
63% of AMD enthusiasts are skipping

59% of [H]ard|Forum members are skipping the 1155 platform
58% of current the people currently using an Intel CPU are skipping the 1155 platform

If I had a quad I just might hold out for the socket 2011 Sandy Bridge CPUs, but my dualie needs to be put to pasture.

I don't see how you can still have a Q6600 and not see the huge jump that would be had by upgrading to even a 2500K.

I say this also because I have a Q6600 and will be upgrading to a 2500k due to the great reviews.

I like how he states that he has a Q6600 and then says that compared to an i7 920, he feels it would be waste. The 2600K is probably about twice as fast as a Q6600 (2500K, a little less)

Really looking forward to building my PC. Definitely upgrading my current C2D.

May be this way: Say you are limited by your video card when playing Eyefinity enough that your CPU makes only a slight differece?

Then why were you "looking forward to these CPUS"? Did you think they were going to help your videocard somehow?

I am skipping it, as I am hoping that by the next Retail Edge deal Socket 2011 is out.

I like to upgrade only rarely, so I would like to invest in a platform that could last me a while. I just don't want to be paying for yesterday's platform... But that's just me.

You have to take one for a test drive and then go back. Then you'll really feel the differences.

A q6600 to a new overclocked Sandy will be like going from a stock Ford Mustang GT, to a Z06 Corvette.

I've had this old first rev i7 920 since they were released. It does 3.96GHz without a hitch. Currently, it looks like I'll be holding onto it.

I just went to i7 950 with great deals over the holidays from my q6600.

It was a huge jump. And my plan is a hex core then a 2011 or whatevers around in 2 to 3 yrs.

Unfortunately I have to skip. I would love to upgrade but the pc in my sig is going to have to hold me over about three more years due to financial reasons (unless I literally win money in the lottery). As long as I can play the upcoming Elder Scrolls with pretty good settings I will be happy.

My rig gonna have to hold me out to maybe socket 2011. Still does everything I throw at it no problems. Still rocking a Core2Duo at 4.3ghz.

Still on Q6600, waiting till Q3 at least then I might upgrade. :)

SB looks pretty damn fast though. Blows mine away. lol.

My C2D 6420 is about to go from average performing gaming / work PC to an overpowered HTPC. Definitely going to upgrade.

Still waiting to decide. VERY happy with my current 920. I cant think of a single thing I do with it where its maxxed out.

I am going to hold off until all the bugs are worked out if any come up. Plus I am financially strapped right now as well. I did read the article over at Maximum PC regarding the Sandy Bridge CPUs and they have a little 3 line paragraph under the "socket section" that states Intel is rethinking the LGA2011 socket and may stick with only the 1155 socket.

I did that with my previous pc but since it was sitting there, I kept loading it with tasks so now I think it definitely needs more than 2 cores..

"Currently on C2D and upgrading"

I have $400 from Christmas saved up and by the time my birthday swings around in March I should be in good shape to upgrade to 2600k.

My C2D is so old and crappy it's still branded a Pentium. Definitely upgrading to SB.

I have two i7 boxes, one that does 3.8GHz and is used for mostly file server duty, media streaming and a 2nd box for gaming, and another at 4.4GHz that is my primary machine.

Going to hold off for LGA-2011 Sandy Bridges or maybe Ivy Bridge. There isn't enough of a tangible performance upgrade yet and I want to stick with the high-end parts.

I have an i7 right now, and it's serving everything I do admirably. If I come across a heap of money that I have nothing better to spend it on, I might look to upgrade, but it's a VERY slim chance that I would.

Waiting to see how retail mobo prices pan out. 2500k, mobo, and 4GB for some moderate overclocking planned. If I can put that together for at or under $350 I might jump.
Otherwise used q9550 swap for a net ~$100 and wait a few months.

Probably going to upgrade my C2D E6600. I commend you on your thorough breakdown of options in the poll -- much better than just "skipping" and "upgrading"!

If I wasn't on a i7 920 @ 4.2 I would upgrade. but I don't see it to be even remotely worth it.

Yes unless I can find a P67 mobo for under $100. If I needed bells and whistles I wouldn't have been on P35 for years.

I actually searched around the web for a poll like than, and when I didn't find one, I decided to create one here. I thought the guys at [H]ard|Forum would be more knowledgeable :D

Going from a q6600 @3ghz to a 2600k ASAP!

and a laptop in the near future (slipped on some ice, twice).

i think i'll have to skip, gonna wait on 2011 and see what that brings to the table. I don't think SB would bring me much improvement since i run my 920 @ 3.8 anyway

Currently on i7 950 and waiting for LGA 2011/Ivy Bridge. I have no plans for LGA 1155, but if I found a Fry's combo style good deal on one, I wouldn't pass up a hot deal on a 2600k + board.

(BD ain't coming in Q2 :p)

If you're still perfectly fine with your old cpu, then there's no point upgrading. It doesn't matter if your CPU is 3-4 years old already. The important question is if it still works great for you or not.
