my box has a q9300 o/c 3.4ghz o/c been stable for year or so now.

2x pny 460gtx 1gb

it does if the cards are o/c or not. but when i go to bed at night gpu0 locks up at 100% it only locks up at 100% and when i go to bed. Its fine the rest of the day.

any idea what is causing gpu0 to lock the machine up at 100% requiring a hard reboot.

i thought the cards were getting hot so i put a fan on the side of the to keep the cards cool.
They sit around 60c on both cards.

since it is after you go to bed, maybe it is because of some power saving feature attempting to work. have you got your monitors turning off automatically?

There are so many other power saving things hidden in other devices that could be causing it. one of my favorite things to turn off is "USB selective suspend" in the power options, often fixes quirky behaviour

i turned that off and pci express one off. see if that works.

Machine isn't used except to fold. Its driving me nuts

Try going to bed at different time or stay awake all night and see if it still happens? :) Couldn't resist. Anyway, what Defex said. You might also look at any scheduled backup, defrag, or automatic updates that run after you go to bed. My money is on one of those power saving features. Luck!

the thing is its when gpu0 gets to 100% every time. i just don't see the timing of that happening every night.

Stop the client, delete and replace all the .dll files that are in the GPU Folding client's folder and try again.

when it gets to 100% and gets stuck, is it trying to upload the result? maybe there is power management on the LAN chip or something as well.

doing stuff on other machines and things during the day, the machine will be talking to others on the network, maybe if the rest of them are off, or not doing anything the LAN goes to sleep

Very good point there.... I never could get my head around why it only would do it at night, but that might be the very reason.

go into your power settings and make sure you dont have sleep on idle. turn off all power saving features. go into the advanced options and check in there as well. most likely you have sleep/standby/hibernate turned on some where. turn off you screen saver as well. just set the display to turn off after x minutes instead of having the screen saver on.

Also make sure to check the hard drive sleep settings, Windows7 likes to spin them down by default after so long. Even when I changed the power settings to performance mode on some recent fresh installs, I had to go into the specific advanced setting for the hard drive and change it to "Never".

after this smp unit drops im going to just run the 2 460's and see if it does it anymore.

oh hi filter! i have u in my sights, we should have a race :)

dont look at last weeks, look at the last few days :)

have to show up on my threat list first :D

i think you should hold off r-type

Yeah yeah yeah, especially since I just sold him my GTX 460. (Note to self, selling folding gear to rivals is not a good way to mow).

Filter, I think your problem is almost certainly work unit gnomes sneaking out and messing with your boxen at night.

Phase 1: Freeze Work Unit
Phase 2: ?
Phase 3: Profit!

Seems R-type help me fix this problem . I upped teh voltage to 1000mv.

cards have been stable now 24/7 for about 5 days now at 851mhz o/c on them and i have yet to get a reboot. seems they need more voltage and with that a big o/c o n them for me.

thanks again to R-type

Hey no problem, I'm always available to recommend putting more voltage through other people's hardware ;)

Well it seems to be doing it again when gpu 0 gets to a100% it locks up the machine again.

Damn, where did that Mad-Max-Esque supercharged drive come from? You borg a few workstations?

only 4 computers at home :) and one part timer. most of them will stop folding on may 1. (or whenever it gets warm enough i dont need house heating :)
I have an awesome 97% gas furnace with timed heating and cooling, It only costs $100 a month on the coldest times. Electricity without folding is almost nothing as well, with folding its quite a lot more! Im keeping it up for science and the [H] (and a bit of mower fun)

2 of the computers are in the same room as the thermostat, and sometimes furnace "forgets" to come on because the room is warm enough already. and its -10c outside lol. folding is making my morning shower a bit uncomfortable because the heat doesn't bother to come on!

electricity is costing a fair bit compared to gas, but at least the computers are actually doing good work before they make the heat rather than just burning gas for heat.

remember when you said that? :D now that do you think!

nice. Chuck hasnt been running much this last week.

and to my orignal question machine is still restarting itself when a gpu unit gets to 100%

can you tell if it restarts right when the cpu usage is released, or when it tries sending the results on the network?

no i cant it doesnt do it every work unit. so its hard to sit there and watch for it.

Is it only gpu0 doing it? Maybe swap the gpus around and see if gpu0 still does it. Then you will know if it's the cards fault or something else like the motherboard.

did it with both GPU"S in the box but now it only has 1 and still does it. its even done in once with a SMP unit when it got to 100%

I've heard reports as well as my early GTX460 would lock up, mostly under GPU load, sometimes randomly. try RMA'ing them.

If the cpu does it and the card does it, the only thing i can think of is maybe the power supply makes a voltage spike when the current suddenly drops after being under load for a while, can you try running something that eats a lot of power, then stops quickly, maybe intel burn test or furmark can duplicate the freeze without having to wait for ages for something that might not even happen.

im almost 100% sure its not the PSU because that PSU was in chuck and was powering 3gpu's and never had an issue at all.
