Stop front LED from blinking in "sleep" mode?

I figure it had something to do with mobo settings but I've looked at all I can find and still nothing. My computer is in my bedroom and the blinking drives me crazy when I'm trying to sleep.

I recently changed mobo's from a Gigabyte GA-P35-DS3L to an ASUS P5N-D to support 2 video cards and thats when the power LED started blinking in sleep mode. I don't want to just unplug the LED cause I turn my monitors off and use it to make sure the computer is off too. Any suggestions? Would it be a Windows 7 setting? (Although I didn't have this problem before which leads me to believe its a mobo problem).

Case is a CM-690, and since its a case problem I wasn't sure whether to post it here or in the mobo forum...

i wish they would set it like the monitors....coloured one way for on and another for sleep. as far as i know u cant change the blinking light without disconnecting it.

some blink, some pulse, some oem boards swap colors. its a motherboard setting that you cant control, its set that way somewhere at a low level either via a control circuit or bios (control circuit being more likely)

i had an annoyingly bring blue LED on a set of speakers that would light up my whole room, popped the button apart dug the led out, placed a piece of masking tape over it, now its a dim blue led and dose not bother me at all, but i can still look at a glance in the brightest of light and see that it is on

That's funny since I have the CM690 II advanced and I never noticed the power led blinking at night.
However, my mobo had a bunch of very bright blue leds indicating the number of power phases being used and they would change constantly. took me a good bit of searching to find the option in the bios to turn them off. guess that's why the power led wasn't a problem for me.

Thanks for the responses. That right there is enough to make me not like this ASUS board. However petty it may be, how hard can it be to include that option in the BIOS? They'll let me change the voltage and just about anything else, but a simple "Sleep mode LED state=blinking/off" is out of the question. damn ASUS!

Done ranting, on a side note their monitors look really nice on my desk :)

I have an EVGA X58 mATX board, and the power light doesn't blink in sleep mode.

For a neat case mod, get one of those auto color changing LEDs, and add 33 or 50 ohm resistor on it. Replace your power LED with the new one. Changes color when computer is on, but only blinks red when on standby. Should work in theory. If you search around the net for help, this should be pretty cool.

its the same power source for LED power when sleeping and awake... that mod will be a little more tricky than that.

I was basing my assumption that multi-color LEDs lower in resistance as they warm up (constantly on), and therefore should get brighter as they stay on. Am I right?

Sounds good, but I have not herd that. Also, I have not ever noticed a multi-color led be any less bright that a regular.

On the topic, in my wife's Dell I just added a large resistor inline to the power LED, so its so dim I don't notice the flashing when asleep, but no too dim, if I look at it I can tell its on.

hmmm my MSI 980 mobo has an option in BIOS to kill the blinking light in sleep mode.

I think there is no computer yet that does not blink. Try obscuring your computer from where you sleep. i think this would help a little lol.

I originally taped a small piece of paper over the blue power LED on my silverstone cases. However, all of my silverstone cases seem to use super juiced up LED, or something...

I just didn't plug in the power LED. It's too annoying to bother contending with, for me. I will know if my PC is on via the front fans spinning.

You can't stop the blinking LED, all Asus have it, Gigabyte mobos don't blink in S3 suspend, that was your best choice.

Cover it up or remove it? You don't really need a light to tell you your computer is on.

Yep. I first covered, then later removed mine.

Silverstone makes all of their lights (on at least their lanboxes) very annoyingly bright.

A small bit of electric tape will solve that problem lol. I do that for my power case light it's like a flashlight at nite.

Black Gorilla tape cut to a small enough size that it will not catch on the sides over the button and zzzzzzzzz.....
I agree it is very annoying after spending 1,800 to have a custom computer built I found myself with no sleep
I guess Duck tape dose fix everything!!!!

I have an Asrock H87 Fatal1ty and the power led is steady blue while on and flashing the same blue when asleep. I have to cover it with something at night cause its BRIGHT! Like JoAnn said, after spending two grand on a build, its ridiculous to be unable to stop a blinking light.

Look for an option for dual-color power LED in the power management or ACPI settings. If you have it, that should disable the blinking LED. If not, then you'll have to unplug it.

I was wondering when did I reply to this thread, since I did not recall posting in this subforum for a while.

Nowadays, I do run with the electrical tape (since my fans are far quieter than they used to be - my desktop is nearly 100% silent at idle).

not all monitors do that, one of my Samsungs would blink blue when asleep, my HP and Viewsonic would be blue while on and amber when asleep.

My Silverstone HTPC case had a really bright blue led and I just put a piece of cellophane tape and used a black marker to make it dimmer, it was behind a door so it didn't look bad.

Oh, I wish I had taken a picture of the scrap of color paper that I had used to plug up one of my Silverstones' power LED (this one needed the power LED, so I couldn't just unplug it). It was initially pink, but ended up being completely white after 2 years (with some pink at the edges, it was really a neat patterning effect). I eventually just used electrical tape, as suggested in this thread, 6 years ago!
