In my roving through ebay listings for some 6 core loving I found this
http://cgi.ebay.com/INTEL-XEON-6-CO...BZJ-/220686946360?pt=CPUs&hash=item3361f79038

A 6 core xeon for $495. It's an Intel L5639 but it doesn't exist on intel's website and googling doesn't lead to anything. These are still too rich for me as Christmas is coming and I need to hold impulse buying to a minimum. If people are still looking for a semi cheap xeon six core chip this might be it.

They might do ok in a SR-2, but I bet these would shine in a single socket rig.

STOP! Don't tell me these things.

I have two. That is enough. I will not click. I will not click.

This forum is like the opposite of AA. Mutual enablers...

damn right.. some ones gotta save the economy.. might as well be us while doing science..

Just queried for a qty 1 of the "INTEL XEON 6 CORE PROCESSOR L5639 2.13GHZ SLBZJ" for testing in three brands (Asus, eVGA, and Gigabyte). Waiting for response.

After jumping on the L5640 ES wagon it's difficult to pay the price listed. But if one can be had for testing...

That's unusual - looks like a production part, yet no references on Intel's site.
I'd be very wary of this one, though - notice it does not list hyperthreading as one of the supported features, so it may be a 6-core-physical-6-core-logical part.

That's an L5630 Quad. :p

I didn't even notice that. There is really nothing out there on this processor. I have a question in to the seller now. I'll post anything i find out.

i think it's a seller thing. he doesn't hyperthreading on any listing. It could still be true but with the l5638 and the l5640 both supporting hyperthreading my head would explode if the l5639 did not.

Good point. On the other hand, the only Xeon I can see on Intel's site that ends in a 9 (5609) is the only Xeon that does not support HT.

It will be interesting to see what the seller has to say. Either way, I hope your head won't explode!

Yeah, I'm a little skeptical about that myself. If this is an 'Extended Specs' processor it would explain the lack of information on Intel's site, but the seller should state what the item he is selling really is if that's the case. Interested in what his response will be.

It's not. ES CPUs are clearly marked as such on the packaging.
I have some that aren't from older generations but are revealed to be through Identification apps. Mind you, this is all in the assumption that the picture is representative of the actual item. We're taking everything to be true at face value here including the item's description.

Assuming someone actually ready the sSpec off one of the chips and the auction is accurate, these are not ES chips.

I am convinced these are not.

Guys, don't incite unnecessary arguments were there aren't any. When I stated *if* I meant it merely as an expression to begin my statement. Can we post something here without need to look over our shoulders for someone to launch a hypercritical remark at us?

My point was simply that there's no point worrying about what might be the case if these are ES CPUs. I wasn't inciting anything.

Who is inciting an argument? I am just saying that based on what we know at this point, these do not appear to be ES chips. I'll post confirmation and additional specs if/when I get them from the seller. I just like the idea of sub-$500 hex cores for anyone who wants them. Should we be skeptical? Sure. But if these are the real thing, they may be a great deal. This would be especially true if they have a 2x turbo. The L5638s have 1x and the non-ES L5640s have 2x, so who knows...

I aint worrying for myself, Zero. There's no way I'm purchasing these or other processors through eBay. I have used eBay since the late 90s. Can't tell you how many times I got ripped off one way or another. That entails one reason (not the only one) I purchase locally and occasionally through etailers.

Just want to mention.... I was just looking at the listing and noticed that these L5639 processors might be better than the L5640 ES for power consumption and overclockability. The TDP on the L5639 is 20W lower than the L5640 ES (Q3NC).

I love that Googling for "L5639" has this thread as the first result.

Seriously doubt these are engineering samples (ES). Both HP and IBM have ordered custom cpu's (Intel and AMD) before to fit defined vendor specs. This Intel L5639 Xeon looks like another one of those cases. Especially given the seller is also selling a lot of other HP gear as well. Guessing this was a bulk buy from either HP or a higher tier seller now being dumped for what they can get. Notice the price as already dropped from the previous listing of $595.00 to the level of $495.00 for the current listing.

If they come down another $100 I will buy one just to satisfy my curiosity on how well they will perform in EVGA, Asus, and Gigabyte motherboards.

Looks like 10 (or more) are offered capped at 20 total for the current listing.

Hmm. If I had not just bought a pair of L5640's from a fellow folder, I would bite.

If these come down another $100 I'm in for two, and looking to sell some of my rapidly increasing random collection of E5640, L5640, and X5650s

I'm trying to get my hands on two matched hex cores, but that is proving relatively difficult to do on a tight budget

I'd be interested in some hexa core lovin.

Also I had a chat with them, this was discouraging. I asked about a price drop.
aimguest190905: I suppose, if this auctions ends are guys going to drop the price by $100 again?
Customer Support went online at 8:29:15 PM.
Customer Support: To be honest, I wouldn't be able to predict that, I would think that the selling price would go higher

Also this
Customer Support: No they're not a specialty part for HP, just a regular Intel chip...

Who did you talk to? I am still trying to get some specifics and testing on them to verify what they are. Gal Lis replied to my question on ebay.

lol i used their aol instant chat on the ebay page. I'm hoping they'll go a little lower still though.

I'm tempted to built a "gaming" rig with one of these if they go lower.

Maybe Kyle could ask one of his Intel contacts what an L5639 is.

Of course they said it would go higher. Lol. That's what I would say too.

update

Just bit the bullet and ordered one. I'm going to test in two lga 1366 boards, one asrock and one asus (with the most up to date BIOSes). I might have results this weekend if it gets here!

cool. we'll be interested to know results

Can you also quickly buy another one and an SR2, and give us a full overclocking report by the weekend?

Thanks. Appreciate it. ;)

Ugh I'll start collecting the pennies in my couch. Give me 1 or 2 years to save up. Once I got one though I can bust out a lab report in 2 days max doing shots of 4 hour energy. You never crash if you never stop drinking it.

You are a brave man osrk.

Foolish if I fail

A hero if I succeed (more cheap hex cores for all!) =P
