Anyone still playing eq 1? Steam's eq starter pack is going for $2.50 including free 30days for a new account. any [H} advice for 7years absent returning player?

I've gone back to the game on an off since retiring around 2003. Once in 04-05, again in 06, then again in 08, until recently when I'm waiting for old accounts to be reactivated to play again on my old account.

Now, from what your saying, your interested in starting over, rather than just using your old account, right?

For beginners, the game has gotten a lot easier. Leveling speed has significantly increased since 2003 (even 2003's rate was noticeably faster than release EXP gain rate). There are a lot of new low level quest givers for noobies so that you can get full sets of armor. You can also solo at lower levels. While never doing it, the Serpent Spine expansion I heard was very noobie friendly, offering quest from 1-50 for solo players.

AA's have also been redone. The lower amount of AA you have, the faster they are gained. Some abilities have also been moved over to the AA window, like SK Harm Touch and Paladin LoH. You gain them at the normal time, but they are in this ability window now, rather than having their own. This makes it easier in a way to apply AA's to them, at last from a players standpoint.

They also have 'Mercenaries' which you can hire, that act as NPC group members. They cost money but it's worth it to have a pocket Cleric.

Overall, the game has become much more solo friendly overall but has retained it's core grouping concept.

I recently saw the original EQ + expansions listed in Steam too! I spent a considerable amount of my time from '99 to '03 playing that bloody game, but vowed never to even contemplate returning again ;)

So now it's solo friendly, hirable guards, even AA's are available to all levels eh? Sounds likes it's a different beast now. But still a BEAST!!

no no ... just moved those abilities into AA window for better integration with AA's that advance them. The AA progression has been modified significantly (much faster) but you still need to be 51 to get them.

Another thing they changed a while go is that after you are sitting for 30 seconds you go into an accelerated mana/hp regeneration. It still takes a while to heal/med up (slower than WoW) but it's still way, way faster than it used to be. It's pretty well balanced for what EQ is and playability.

At first I misread your thread title as "Crack cocaine: worth returning?"

Don't do it, man. That game eats your soul like no other.

Consider EQ mac. The last expansion released for it is Velious, so you'll be getting more of that nostalgic feeling.

$2.50 and a month free? Even if you didn't like it, that is pretty much win-win.

Keep in mind, the upper crust is max level, 3,000+ AA's, in gear that couldn't really even be imagined back in '03. There are still family guilds and your average grouper, but the main portion of EQ players have been around for years.

If you have a couple friends, it would be fun. But if you're all alone, good luck! The game is still the most hardcore difficult MMO out there, even with the more recent changes that make it much easier than it was years ago.

I loved playing EQ1, and still have my old toons there..BUT went back for the free week or so they gave a while back and couldn't take the graphics...lol
Even turned all the way up to max it's painful to play imho. If they upgraded the graphics to the 1900x1200 levels then i think EQ1 could give WoW and the other mmo's more of a run for the money.
But maybe it's just me...(STILL hope they someday put beastlords in EQ2 lol)

Are you fucking kidding me. Wtf is this shit.

I woke up after spending some time with the new relatives. I got on their computer and went here and saw an EQ thread. I knew I would come on later and buy it through steam when I got home. I was really looking forward to it, I thought it would be fun. I would actually try eq 1 for the first time. I was a huge supporter of EQ 2. I bought it and played it the very morning it came out. When EQ 1 was still new, I was busy playing Asheron's Call beta and retail.

So, what the ++++ licking die in a fire bull shit is with my timing.

Hardocp blocks swear words? Since when? It came up as, "plus plus plus plus..."

We have been blocking certain words for about 8 years now and we also have a rule about excessive use of profanity. ;)

(7) No CUSSING in the thread title. It is permitted in the thread body, but please refrain from using excessive profanity dammit.

Since when? This forum beyond any other has always been open to profanity to any degree. I thought maybe this was a forum where thought is just formed. I have to assume that the rule pertains to the poster. As long as the profanity is not negative towards another person, then it is allowed.

No, as Major stated, certain words have been filtered here for a long time.

Must not be tempted, spent way to much of my life playing EQ from 99-05.

Aside from old-school stuff like ROTT, Doom, Wolfenstein, etc my fondest memories of gaming will always be logging into EQ for the first time back in '99.

aye the original EQ was the best played from release untill end of planes of power era.

Your right but it's fun as hell for someone to take a more powerful character and solo area's and gain XP in places where you used to have to group. The last few years when I went back I didn't do any of the new content, just played around in my old favorites.

I went back recently (October - December 09) and picked up to max level and about 500AA to hit around 1020AA before I just stopped again when the newest expansion came out. I mean really the game just demands too much time. I found myself using a PTO day to play on patch day for the first time in 7 years. Can't do that shit anymore.

It was fun leveling because with the bot cleric (I am/was a magician) my pet could take nearly anything! I solo'd Veeshan's Peak as a mage for gods sake - I remember when that stuff was so hardcore we had a guildie log out and never return in there. I went and solo'd King Tormax and was gonna try the AoW but he wasn't up. Planes of Power gods are soloable now...WTF lol. That expansion was the best ever but man mudflation over the past several years has just totally eroded the old stuff. But once you are at max level it just gets boring again as raiding is the same as it ever was.

see that sounds horrible to me those were huge raid targets at one time.. obviously alot became doable with 2 groupso r 3 but to solo that stuff is not right. I liked my EQ hard and rough lol. Wiping on the plane of fear break racing against time to get corpses. ahh the good days.

A decision was made around Luclin or PoP that the game was going to focus on 'the latest 5 levels', even if it means completely screwing up the previous levels, and that's it. It's too bad really.

Loved it and hated it. Man did it sap the life from me. :D I got it for $2.50 from Steam. It's cool to go back and revisit everything. And with Mayong, it's much easier to just jump in the game and play.

It's back up to $19.99 now. I'm sure the Underfoot pack will be out soon enough for $5 or so.

happend later then planes of power the game was still hard during those times to a degree. The graveyard function had just been played with when i quit.

Luclin times were some of the best imo course Paladins had finally started getting some love also.
