Any 5XXX owners SERIOUSLY secretly contemplating selling their cards for Fermi?

Nope. If anything, I'll get another 5870 for Crossfire if Fermi drives down prices.

The answer is no because if anyone says that he is going to do that, it won't be secretly anymore. ;)

Nope, not contemplating it anymore. Sold my two 5870s last week. Can't wait for my 480s to get here.

No, I'm not thinking about it either anymore. Sold my 5870 last week as well, and now have a 470 on pre-order from Frys.com now (I decided since I could switch for free that way, I would save the extra $150). Can't wait for it to get here... let's just say a 9800GT 512 is not fun for 2560x1600 gaming in the meantime :p. +/-5% of the 5870 like some of the reviews are showing, in my own personal system, and I'll be happy.

2x 5850s, fermi isn't even remotely interesting to me.

yeah, moving to WC and EVGA HydroCopper FTW's GTX480 SLi'd, getting rid of my 60hz eyefinity monitors for single 27" 120hz(when released), then a couple more later for surround gaming. Sorry I like PhysX and 3d, otherwise I would stick with what I have.

There is no way I'm giving up eyefinity for minimum SLI 470's for triple monitor gaming ... which doesn't even work yet. The only thing I'd contemplate is a 2nd 5870, a 2GB 5870 or a 5970. Somehow I doubt I'd like two Fermis cooking my room.

Not really. The 480 isn't a huge upgrade from my 5870 and it would be an expensive one, plus the run a tad warm and seem a bit on the loud side. I like being able to keep my GPU fan down low enough that I barely hear it and it stays cool. I am, however, interested in how well they do PhysX considering Nvidia is claiming 2.5x the performance.

He thinks a 470 is as good as a 5870 and better than a 5850. :p

Lets not get into a huge pointless argument or something here, but lookie here...

When we said that Metro 2033 was a BEAST on your graphics cards, we meant it! At 1920x1200 the GTX 480 has a small lead in performance over the HD 5970 and a BIG lead over the HD 5870; even the GTX 470 is doing better than AMD's best single GPU option here. However, at 2560x1600, only the GTX 480 has a chance of making this a playable experience and you would definitely have to turn down the IQ settings with any other card. We were told that the state of drivers for Metro 2033 from AMD were still early and that we could expect big performance jumps up there soon - and we believe that AMD will at least be able to get this title in line with what we saw in all of our previous games.

For SixtyWattMan. Not as good as a 5870, better.

Aww come on pcperspec has been around for ages. They're pretty honest. :D Honestly, the hefty power requirements on this card may be nvidia's ticket imo. The fact that you pretty much have to buy or already have a beastly psu for one card means you will be set to get SLI in the future, then when you get SLI, you get a real good scaling setup and triple monitor support. Actually seems to work imo.

I can't do Fermi, Eyefinity is too amazing and Nvidia Surround a) still doesn't exist and b) would cost $700 since I don't want to drop DX11.

The only problem is that SLIing the 480 is $1000 and the 470 isn't terribly far behind. If I had that kind of cash to spend on my computer I'd be ditching my three monitors and investing in either a very nice IPS paneled 24" or a nice 30" monitor.

GTX 480 is DX11.

[Edit] - Well, true. But Xfired 5870's is at least $800 and Xfired 5970's has to take you back at least $1200.

from what I read fermi does physx the same ie takes the same magnitude of performance degradation from video performance as the 200 series
AnandTech as my source

GTX 480 is DX11.

He means if he went with the gtx 200 series (since he doesn't want to shell out $700 min) for nvidia's triple monitor solution since it requires SLI and is backwards compatible with the gtx 200 series.

AMD did not get a look at the final game code.....TWIWMTBP making for a better overall PC gaming experience. I am sure AMD is tweaking drivers for Metro now. Cool game. Was just playing it on 480 SLI.
I think the fact that they recommended a gtx 400 card before fermi was released might have been some indicator.

Gimme a break, you can't base things off one game or one review site, especially the less-reputable ones.

[H], Anandtech, techpowerup, and many others found GTX 480 to be 10-15% faster than HD 5870, and found that GTX 470 is somewhere between HD 5870 and HD 5850 at stock clocks. [H] basically called the GTX 470 irrelevant because it does not allow you to use higher settings than HD 5850s, which are cheaper, run cooler, draw less power, and are quieter than GTX 470s: "not once did the GeForce GTX 470 provide a superior gameplay experience compared to the Radeon HD 5850, even in Metro 2033. In fact, performance was very close between both video cards, and in some cases the Radeon HD 5850 proved to provide faster framerates. Looking strictly at performance, these video cards are equal."

Also, HD 58xx series can probably overclock more than the already-high-volted/high-heat GTX 4xx parts, so an overclocked 5850 is on probably par with--or faster than--an overclocked GTX 470. We won't know for sure until store-bought cards are tested; the review cards are sent by NVIDIA and may not be representative of cards you can actually buy online or in stores, which is why reputable sites like [H]ard|OCP do NOT measure overclocked performance on company-supplied cards.

Since when do the results of one game constitute the overall picture? I guess I should post a benchmark from Crysis or some other title where the 5870 is faster than GTX480 and proclaim it as the superior performer when I know it really isn't

PCper is pretty old a site, it's been around a VERY long time, and isn't alone in their conclusions.
All I'll say in this thread, I agree we have enough comparing the two :p...

Cool cool. I'm just saying, he said the 470 cannot match the 5870. I proved that in at least one scenerio, for now, it has.

some calls fanboys, some calls nVidiots, some calls fanATIc...

its funny how those people exist to do their "brain" loyalty on something that is different than reality, they will try to pull out every single sand or dust they can grab in order to prove you are wrong, or to trolls...

we been seeing this a lot for the last few month til now and they still exist no matter what the truth is...

because of their existence, our entertainment will never ends... :p

This is sorta on topic but I wonder if any Eyefinity users will drop their cards and go Nvidia once they get nFinity support added to their drivers.

What an incredibly silly question - the two cards are of the same generation?

This would be akin to going back in time and saying to somebody who had just bought a GTX 280 - are you considering selling your card and buying a 4870?

Obviously nobody's going to do that.

Yeah, but at least this thread serves one purpose: It's unwittingly revealed all the ATI fanboys! LOL!

Ehhh... 6 months, same generation?

Someone could have bought a 5870 on release and be completely legitimate in selling it for the gtx 480.

I'm actually personally pondering picking up a used 5870 from one of those people. The only thing stopping me is a comprehensive overview of how far ATI has gone with xfire and eyefinity (Kyle... ;))

Yup, the GTX 480 and the 5870 are of the same generation.

I've done something like that before. Went from a FX 5800 (or 5900, can't remember which ever was around $300 in 2003) Ultra to a 9800SE. A few years later I went from a 3870 to a 9800GTX, though that was solely because I wanted to SLI them.
