Metro 2033 review

Holy crap.

Okay, so we really do need a GTX 480 to run this thing in DX11? Is this an Nvidia thing? Are ATI cards just not working well with this game maybe? Christ. A 5870 can't run this thing in DX 11 at 1080p - that's just... gahhhhh.

EDIT: And you have an overclocked Core i7, as well as fast RAM. Jesus.

Oh wait, hold on a second, you only have 6 GB of ram, when they're clearly recommending that you have 8 GB. Well obviously that's your problem right there. Get another 2 GB of ram bub. :)

EDIT AGAIN: Oh damn. Word on the street is that the game has been pirated already and is getting heavy traffic. :(
if you check review you ll see that actually ati cards work great look at difference between gtx 285 and 5850 normally they are very close but not in this game this is modified stalker engine so i expect better performance from ati not frm nvidia

I'm waiting for a demo. I love the book, and I don't want to see it being badly ported into machine, turning to some dumb shooter. If demo proves that this has something common with story and world portrayed in book, I'll buy it.

These guys worked on STALKER before forming 4A. I doubt it being simply a "dumb shooter" is a big worry.

360 version gets a good review here too: http://www.computerandvideogames.com/article.php?id=238823

Not even slightly surprised that the PC version feels unfinished given the history with STALKER, but I hope it won't matter. STALKER did get polished, I didn't have any serious problems with it and it's one of my favourite games of the last few years. Fingers crossed Metro 2033 gets the polish and more optimization within the next couple of months.

Wait a minute, say what? These guys developed STALKER? So a group of people who have worked exclusively on PC titles have produced a game that works well on the 360 but not on the PC - okay, that makes sense.

The only reason the 480 is recommended is that nvidia paid the developers to make this a "way it was meant to be played"......come on, the card isn't even out yet.
Any DX11 effects in the game were most likely tried on an ATI 5800 series card.

From what I read here, this is acting alot like the first STALKER game.....initially kind of wonky and poorly optimized, and after about a month, ran very smoothly and gradually all of the effects were useable.

I've read in other posts that disabling tessellation brings the DX 11 framerate back up to 40ish or so from the 14-26 that it runs at with it..

That would explain the recommendation of a GTX 480.. since those are reportedly beasts at tessellation.

I'll probably test this when I get back from work this evening.

This doesn't feel like it was meant to run at 60 fps, to be honest.. so anything above 30 should be adequate.. which I can get in DX 10 mode w/ very high settings at 1080p

Goes without saying.

And I bet it'll still sell well anyways as always. Unless the game is crap, which I doubt.

game that works well on the 360 but not on the PC - okay, that makes sense.
A console is a closed system, so it's easier to chase down bugs and optimise the speed, and console games cannot be released until they pass the quality control at Microsoft (or Sony, Nintendo) and it is the console manufacturer who controls the manufacture of the game discs. The 360 is not so hugely different from a PC either, so developers can adapt relatively easily.

It's no excuse to release very unfinished PC versions, the publisher and developer should man up and accept the increased costs / reduced revenue while they polish the PC release, but I can understand why PC games get released in much worse state. Having worked in console game development I've seen the QA time that can go into getting a console game finished, passed to manufacture then within a week of release dozens or hundreds of new bugs (usually minor) get identified - basically because even hundreds of full time QA staff can't test on the same scale as a few hundred thousand customers.

people complain when games arent demanding and complain even more when they are. I think its time for a console instead of sinking more and more money into my pc just to run three or four demanding games. lol

Ouch, those are some pretty harsh system requirements if that slide is true.

Then again, Fermi is rumored to be awesome at tessellation, and they do recommend a GTX 470+ for this game, so I'm guessing this might be sort of a "showcase" title for Nvidia's new card. I guess we'll see soon enough hopefully.

As far as complaining over demanding games... most of the time it's just sour grapes from people who can't afford the latest and greatest IMO. Then again, sometimes you have a game like Cryostasis or GTA IV that simply requires way too much hardware muscle for not enough on-screen sexiness and then it actually makes sense to be disappointed. I don't know what to think of this Metro 2033 one yet--gonna wait for some reviews.

It can be but there's also some truth to the "poorly coded and optimized" concept.

In the case of GTAIV, several patches made all the difference in the world for that game vs. when it first came out of the box. I couldn't believe the differences.

It was demanding but there was also a coding/optimization issue that the aforementioned patches went miles in making a huge difference.

Me, too.

To some degree there's some weight to the idea of "poorly coded/optimzed" and I'm betting that's true and a safe bet to a point with this game.

These games coming out of Eastern Europe and such, like the Stalker series, are well nigh notorious for at least coming out of the box in less than ideal shape.

Only the most recent STALKER game was the exception to that norm.

The numbers make sense that to get the game out the door they optimized the 360 version (which is more DX9/10ish then anything) and just had it ready to put in a box for the PC as they can patch it later but everybody wants their money now so they had to release. You'd think though that the get it 100% good console concept would of killed the string of patches for a PC release by now but I guess not.

I'm getting the idea waiting for that first patch would be a really good idea with this game.

I just got STALKER:CoP,figure by the time I finish that there will be patches or mods that will take care of most bugs or rough spots in Metro to make it worth a try.

SKIDROW has had it out for 12 hours now, and Razor1911 wasn't far behind.

Again, pretty much goes without saying.

I seriously doubt the game's sales will be affected if it's a good game...as usual.

I think you hit the nail on the head.
This might be a little rough right out of the box, but I bet within a couple of weeks it will run much better.
I have it arriving in the retail box tomorrow, I'm anxious to see what it's like......but those numbers look pretty harsh, however...... the guy could probably use a little more GPU muscle.

There's a danger here that the DRM debate is going to start up again, which would probably cause Oldie to go ballistic, but it's difficult for me to sit back and see people post comments of this nature.

I think that for the purposes of this discussion we'd just better leave the piracy talk out of it. And yeah, I admit that I was the one who first brought it up. I shouldn't have done that. :(

I posted a fact. There's nothing to it.

In your case, across two threads, a good month's worth, getting banned from here for flaming a mod, getting banned off the Steam forums recently for more or less the same kind of thing...that's an excellent idea Wabe.

You're no moral crusader or morality police. Drop the subject. We're all tired of it.

Q-BZ you're asserting your OPINIONS as though they're facts, and it's extremely annoying. You're baiting me right now. (And by the way, I never 'flamed' a moderator. That's just completely false. The moderators at this forum are older people who are obviously intelligent, and I never would have done that. It's impossible for me to stand back and allow you to make a blatantly false statement like that.)

EDIT: Also, the Steam forums? Huh? THIS forum is the HardForum. What happens at another forum has no bearing whatsoever here. Enough. This thread is about Metro. Olide has made it clear he's fed up with DRM discussion. I'm sorry that I even mentioned that this game had been pirated. Yes, that was my fault. Just drop it Q-BZ.

wow, I really regret buying this without waiting for a demo or more extensive feedback. It feels like a really really lame console port. No quicksaving, poor performance all around and I can't even change individual graphics options! I don't really need anti-aliasing and SSAO and would love to just disable those features so I can try and squeeze some more frames out of this horridly optimized mess of a game.

Maybe in three months they will finish making the game but I really feel kind of ripped off now.

On that, I'm definitely waiting until this game is patched to consider a purchase.

Game runs/plays fine on PC. Stop smoking crack.

Need your specs, gaming resolution, and in-game graphics settings. I need more experiences before I decide to pull the trigger on this. That is if you're not talking about PCs in general,.

No Quicksaving makes it a console port? Dam people bitch about everything. As for performance. The game can take advantage of dx11 and current hardware isn't up to the task.. Not unless you SLI something. I'm running it on dx9 (winxp) normal settings + 1920x1080. And my framerate is very playable.50-70fps. (lowest i saw was 40) Playable game > pretty gfx.

There needs to be the ability to configure the video settings rather than what it is currently. SSAO is likely a huge resource hog and I could do without it.

No, Metro 2033 is developed by 4A Games. STALKER is developed by GSC Game World.

A couple guys who worked on STALKER went over to 4A, but most of the developers on Metro 2033 did not work on STALKER.

I was wondering about this. Some of the sound effects are from STALKER lol.

Often times a company will license out parts of their sound library. You have no idea how many games/movies have had the Doom elevator sounds in them or how many recent games use Seeker idle noises from Wizardry 8. Probably even easier to license these sounds from GSC due to the staff that worked there.

The infamous Wilhelm scream is another one you hear all the time in movies and games.

That U-tube video, in which the first ten minutes of the game were recorded, demonstrates some pretty horrific voice acting. Another guy came through here one time and said that the original Russian voice acting for the Stalker games makes the English versions almost unplayable. Maybe instead of hiring Russian voice actors, they should have hired English voice actors to do Russian voices - that might have worked better?

the game is set in Russia...Russian actors makes more sense...adds to the realism and setting of the game...having an American guy faking a Russian accent would have been terrible...they all would have sounded like the Russian boxer in Rocky 4

I hear the config files are easily accessible and this open the world for PC gamers from adjusting FOV on. I'm just waiting to see what a few more people say and such and I'll probably be getting this pretty soon.

This is the advice floating around:

Users\<USER NAME>\AppData\Local\4A Games\Metro 2033\user.cfg

FOV can be adjusted from the bizarre default of 45

you can also put in:

g_global_god on
g_god on
g_unlimitedammo on

and fix a bunch of other variables. Just set user.cfg to read only

For folks that have the game I hope that makes sense. :)

Whats wrong the the current FOV?

I enjoy my FPS games at a FOV of 80-90, not 45.

However, while the fix does eliminate the tunnel vision, it stretches out the players gun and arms depending how high the FOV is set. Still, for me, it beats playing with the vanilla FOV.

I'm guessing you're running a 16:10 monitor or res. I use 16:9 which is wider. So I guess I don't experience that.
