Mass Effect 2 - thoughts, opinions?

Me2 kinda reminds me of FMA.

your a dog of the military in ME1, now your a dog of a big bad corp. Your givin free reign to do what you want but you gotta play within the rules and do what your told.

still loving the game so far

Some of you must be playing a different game than me or need to lighten up because I don't know where all this KKK and racist stuff comes in at all.

I think they are referring to how Cerberus were in the bad guy group in the first game. It's mentioned more than a couple times. :p

But yea, I kinda get the "bad" feel, only because Shepard was revived from the dead. :D

In the first 30 minutes of the game you're subjected to multiple dialogs referring to your company as an anti-alien terrorist organization. (not to mention the first game)

Fair enough I guess but man I think these guys need to lighten up a little bit. ;)

What's funny is: I came into the game with a high paragon rating which is holding but I like how you get these paragon or renegade instances during certain dialogs with certain characters at certain times...hell, I've had a great laugh getting that renegade figure up a bit.

For example: On the Citadel you run into that reporter from the first one that really tried to smear you (not the one you did the quests for)...and before I knew it, I saw a Renegade option, I hit it...and I won't ruin it for anyone but I was kind of laughing in surprise when Shepherd did what he did.

You'll see. ;)

But that doesn't mean your character is and you can see that as the game goes along that pretty much becomes a non issue right quick. At least it has for me.

They kind of fudge over it with some of the dialogue with people like Miranda who explain how there's different layers, different branches, etc.

There's no question that Cerberus is a mixed bag at best and that's being generous but as I'm sure you've seen, Shepherd has ALL kinds of dialog options to seperate himself and denounce them left and right. :)

I didn't really laugh, but my jaw hit the floor. Very surprising.

I laughed in a manner of "Wow, that was over the top" and not because I thought it was "funny" if you know what I mean. A little excessive. ;)

I kind of felt bad that I was in a hurry and pressed that button in that instance. I didn't think I'd see something like that!

Maybe in part 3 they can give us a "degree of response" selection option on Paragon and Renegade choices. I would have liked that in this instance. :)

Hah, is it is a good as when he clocked her in the face in ME1? Ok, maybe you didn't do that, but I couldn't click on "This interview is over!" fast enough! Hahahahahaha

I was a bit disappointed with the way Morgan was modeled/animated in the first scene. Was that NECESSARY? Don't act like you didn't see it.

Edit: Correction, he hits her in the stomach in ME1.

Ah...see I was being Mr. Goodie Two Shoes most of the time in ME1 and I didn't do that. Heh, I should have known.

It's at least equal with that.

I hear ya.

Why would they consider drinking poison in a bar...passing out... talking to the guy about it a mission?

I feel cheated on that one.

My system, which is no longer brand new at all, completely OWNS this game. Of course, I played the first ME at 2560x1600 on an X2 4400+ and Crossfired X1950XTX plus X1900XTX, all maxed out with no performance issues whatsoever. Come to think of it, I'm prety sure even that system was much faster than the PS3 and XBox 360.

I only have about 6 hours played on this game, but so far it is better than ME1 for me. The characters are well fleshed out and the story is somewhere between Star wars and Bladerunner. Win.

I really wonder how does it runs with only one 1900? My new video card will take a while to ship.

Same here. I think it's better than ME1 in just about every category you could name.

Around 5 hours in. Loving the game with a few small gripes. I hate that the inventory has disappeared, I think, lol. Still undecided on that. Don't like the new "minigames" at all.
Hate how you travel to planets and having to buy fuel for the ship bites. The game feels " consolized" a bit to me, don't much care for it but these are very minor gripes.

Overall I'm liking it very much so far.

What does the advanced mineral scanner for the ship do exactly? What does it speed up? I've scanned a few planets and it seems you just have to move the cursor over every square to get mineral readings and then launch a probe. How is that improved?

It makes the cursor easier to move with your mouse.
It's essentially a health issue for your wrist. Do you want wrist cramps or not? Then buy the advanced scanner, damnit!

my feeling is me2 could of been better and more like the 1st. The problem is if the included and improved the stuff from the 1st that is missing in me2, the game could of easily broken the 360 2 disc limit. i would of preferred a 6th month wait to make a 3+ disc pc version than receive yet another shitty port that is limited by the 360. note to bioware you can fix the problems people are having with free dlc to finish the game properly and put back the stuff in the 1st , like an improved inventory system, mako missions with an upgradeable mako, and make the game no seam like it has been dumbed down to a halo ripoff. the story is the biggest bright point but even that can not cover for the extremely shitty changes.

"2-disc limit"?
Time to release the Xbox 720. Seriously, this game is 11 GB installed (English) on the PC. Time to up the ante folks, let's go for some 20+ GB games. I'm ready. Let's do it.

More important than the sheer volume of game data, is the amount of memory available for textures. As in, your video card's memory. I want to see more 2GiB video cards out. I am not talking about the 2GiB cards that is split across two chips like x2/SLI on a card. A whole 2GiB dedicated to the chip. I hope there will be Fermi cards at launch with 2GiB.

I can't remember, but was it this easy in Mass Effect to swap out different party members while on a mission - I seem to recall that in the first game you actually had to re-enter The Normandy. Here all you have to do is go up to the door.

I'm playing ME1 now, and yes you had to enter the Normandy.
I suppose it's similar to ME2, but ME2 just saves you a few minutes (and a load screen).

I was told u can buy fish for the tanks in Shepards personal space, but where ?

Beat the game recently, unbelievable. BioWare is becoming one of my fav goto RPG game developers.

i'm 12 hours into my first play through. i love the game. i will say, though, that the game has stopped being an rpg and is now mostly just an adventure/shooter game.

This is true, it really is just a third person shooter type game.. with just a lot of dialogue and barely any "customization" of stats :p. Still an awesome game though.

Which level are you guys playing on - normal is too easy, isn't it?

Also, here's a thing I didn't know about the morality system. At the character creation screen you choose your personal background from two lists with three options each.

Spacer
Colonist
Earthborn

... and

Sole Survivor
War Hero
Ruthless

What I didn't realize is that if you choose to be and Earthborn War Hero, then when you perform Paragon actions (basically good actions) then you'll receive more morality points than you would if your were a Ruthless Spacer, choosing the exact same option. The same holds true for the Ruthless Spacer character - that character will receive more Renegade points for choosing evil options.

So essentially, if you want to be a Paragon, then at character creation make sure to select Earthborn War Hero, whereas if you want to be a Renegade then make sure you select Ruthless Spacer.

EDIT: So the question now is, what did I select at character creation? I simply can't remember - I didn't think it was important. How do you find out what your background is?

Well it doesn't really matter, as I played a Ruthless Colonist and still maxed out Paragon easily.

Also, the interrupts (or the so-called quick time events) will have quite a large impact on your morality rating.

Maybe you're trying to build up Paragon points, say - but then, at some point during the game an interrupt will occur, which, if you take it, will make your life a whole lot easier. The problem, of course, is that by taking the easy way out you might end up accruing a whole bunch of Renegade points.

I hadn't realize that selecting an interrupt will actually shape your character, one way or the other. I thought they were just quick-time events with no real consequences other than how they played out.

They have Renegade and Paragon icons on them... Of course they impact your character. :p

That may be true, but in playing the game you would have arrived at that state much earlier if you had chosen to be an Earthborn War Hero.

And if you had arrived there earlier then other options might have been available to you.

I guess their logic is, the kind of qualities that belong to "Earthborn" and "War Hero" are similar to the qualities of Paragons. I think it's bullshit, but I can't decide if BioWare is rewarding Paragons for choosing Paragon backgrounds, or if you're just supposed to know that Earthborn War Heroes are naturally Paragons (based on the descriptions).

I realize that. But I thought the appearance of either the Paragon or Renegade interrupt was the result of how much of a Paragon or a Renegade I was at the time. In other words, I thought, in seeing the Renegade interrupt appear, that this was my reward for having chosen Renegade actions in the dialogue trees.

Speaking of installing the game, did it take a long time for anyone else to install this game? I'm thinking my DVD drive needs replacing since it took a good 30 minutes or more to finish the install.

Only a couple hours in, but I can think of a few....

1). Bring back the RPG-ish inventory. Maybe I'm the only one, but I enjoyed all the different armors, weapons, accessories, ammo, etc.

2). Bring back the health points. The COD style "cover to regain health" is annoying.

3). Where are the huge environments? I rather enjoyed getting into the Mako and exploring various planets.

Please, PLEASE don't post spoilers, but if it gets better, then let me know. I'm setting aside a huge chunk of time this weekend to play more.

People keep on saying that they miss exploring the planets - say what? There was nothing on those planets! They were also the same planet, so what was there to explore?

This game is fantastic. Much better than the first: graphics, dialog, story, characters, music, locations, SHOOTER, and most of the boring RPG elements are gone. Well done Bioware, looking forward to part 3.
