I finally got my new XFX 5870, this one comes clocked at 875 on the core.

Welcome to the cycle my friend. Be prepared to sell the 280s and then begin the search for a 5970 in about a week. Its just the nature of the beast, I loved my 5870 but I adore my 5970!

i wouldnt buy nothing until these REDICULAS prices drop on DX11 cards. lol 600+ dollars fora 5970 to me that is rediculas. even the 310 dollar 5850's are crazy.

I would think 2 GTX 280s in SLI would beat a single 5870.

Not if I got another 5870 for Corssfire.;) Besides, GTX 280's can't do DX11. From what I have experienced so far with the 5870, it seems about equal, and the frames that this one card can put out give or take a few, seems to be along what my SLI setup was giving me.

Nice card, but also, nice game collection.

Surprised you didn't opt for the 5970 considering you ran gtx280 sli previously - but less heat, less power, eyeinfinity....etc. but I would definitely think you are taking a performance hit.

There is some comparison of the gtx 295 and 285 sli versus the 5850 and 5879 here:

Is it just me or does CFX seem to be scaling a bit better than SLI in those test? In any event, I maybe getting a second 5870 for Crossfire. I wanted something that supports DX11 seeing that there are a few DX11 titles I want. Who knows, maybe nVidia's DX11 offering will be better.

Nice card, but also, nice game collection.

Thanks. I have more in Steam. :)

Nice, glad to hear that!

I find the RRP on the 5970 a very good price, $600 works out to be a realistic price of £430-450 in the UK which is pretty reasonable for what is essentially 2 5870s in crossfire (overvolt this card and it clocks to 5870 speeds easily)

I've paid a lot more for cards on launch day before in fact most of my top end cards have been at least that expensive ever since I started buying them back with the Ti4600 which if memory serves was about £450 as well. We get this every generation people complain the price is so high but it's the latest and greatest, it's very complicated hardware, it costs lots to design and make!

It doesn't help that stores are hiking prices in the UK due to supply shortage, £430-450 cards are actually going for £530+ which is a rip off, lucky I managed to pre order mine on day 0 on a store which didn't change from RRP quickly enough and snagged mine for £443 :)

But $600 is the RRP, that's pretty much average for high end cards now a days...

congrats proxy.. you'll love these cards especially power draw wise w3570 @4614mhz at 1.44v H20 HT enabled with 3x hd5870 @985/1263 1.225v only 730 watts total system power draw hehe

guess you haven't seen Australian prices

5870 = AUD$650-799
5970 = AUD$1150-1250

AUD$1 = US$0.925 or £0.56

Thanks for all of the replies. I have to say, this is my 3rd ATi card (9800Pro, then 4870, now 5870) and in ANY source based game I noticed a big difference in image quality. More specifically, that annoying fog bug dose not appear with ATi cards. I can't wait to get me second card, but I must first get a bigger case as these cards are just long enough that they touch the HDD cage.

wow, your pictures sure bring out the OCD in some users! :D BTW - lucky bastard! (on getting a 5870)

Holy buttrape, Batman! They are taking you guys to the cleaners. Are the cards actually selling at those abominable prices?

Yeah they're still in demand but virtually no stock or a handfull off them so hard to say if folks are willing to pay such prices. HD5850 coming in at AUD$499 too.

Some retailers here in OZ have dozens of back orders with no stock insight so started refunding customers on request !

I ordered a 5870 today as well. Last ATI card I have had was a 9800 Pro lol.

serious? if you had a sucky card like a 8500 GT then getting a 5870 makes sense. There will be zero games where dx 11 will make it look better for at least 12 months. heck have you heard of modern warfare 2.....100% DX 9..not even 10. but you had 2 280s which steam roll a single 5870. there are many good reasons to get a 5870...dx 11 support is not among them.

i sold 3 9800 GX2 to australians when they first came out on ebay and made $1000. id do it now except all my cards are maxed

Ditching 2 280s and sli problems is #1.

I think I should also mention I am on a 22 inch monitor, this means that my max resolution is 1680x1050.

I have been running FRAPS since I got my 5870, and my FPS are matching my old SLi steup. I don't give a damn what canned benchmarks tell you. Oh yeah, and crossfire seems to be scaling better than SLi for a lot of games. I'm not a benchmark monkey. I actually PLAY the games. 3DMark is not a game. I also said I will be getting a second one for crossfire soon in my other posts if you missed that part. This is to tide me over until I see what nVidia is gonna do.

Pros:
No SLi = Less hear/power.
No worries about always having the latest SLi profiles.
EyeFinity support.
DX11 (How do you know what difference will be like until all of those titles her here? Have you heard of a game called Dirt2?)
Better image quality.
Alt+tabbing is faster with a single card.

Cons:
I am getting 3 less PFS in some of my games at best.

lol @ only 3 fps difference.

and

lol talking about dirt 2....dx 11 path looks a *bit* better by choice(to sell dx 11 cards) not because it could not look the exact same in dx9. The character faces in dx9 MW2 look 10x better than the character faces in dx11 dirt2....does that mean dx9 is better? Of course not. And dont you wonder why there is no dx 10 pathway...there would be zero justifiable difference in image quality. people sure are gullible.

My 5870 is doing 1000 core and 1300 ram. They are easy to overclock and will add another 10 FPS in most games, about 6 in Crysis.

I sold my GTX 280 SLI, but I didn't go with one 5870 since that is a sizeable downgrade in FPS. I have CF 5870s and that was a worthy upgrade.

What voltage are you using?

Im putting a waterblock on my card tomorrow..I am stable on air at 950/1310 @ 1.174...I want to try to hit 1000 on the core ..It craps out now at [email protected] , but I don't know how high I can go with the volts....

I''ve run a 5870 at 1ghz/1300 at 1.212v. But your experience may vary. It's very much dependant on luck of the gpu that you get. Some gpus need more voltages to run at those speeds.

OK, thanks..........I wonder what the safe limit is...I don't mind feeding it the juice, just don't want to blow it up too soon ..:)

You want some screen shots with fraps? In source based games, yes there is a difference in IQ, fog/lighting bug is gone. And LOL at you seem to be missing that fact that I WILL BE GETTING A SECOND 5870 SOON.

Really dude, if your opinion is that important to you, go make your own thread about how the new 5xxx cards suck, and how MW2 is the best thing ever. Don't bring it to my thread.

Same. In fact I still have it in my Win98 machine (for all my DOS based games).

Ordered a 5870 yesterday as well. It will be replacing my current 285GTX SSC. Should be here, with dongle, next Thursday... along with my new mobo and ram since my C2D setup will bottleneck it at 7680x1600. The things gaming does to my wallet. Yikes.
