Video card - ATI HD 4870

Sound Card - Creative X-Fi Xtreme Music

I have the HDMI audio working on my monitor ASUS MK241H. So the question is that can i still apply the effects to the audio through my sound card control panel ? Or is my sound card even working ?

last I checked...and its been a while...ATi used passthrough audio. It takes the systems audio and routes it through the PCI bus and out of the HDMI. I am not aware of any active audio processing on the ATI cards. this may be old info though.

I have the asus rampage II gene and the 5850... How does this apply to me and what are these effects exactly?

this is for people that are running HDMI from their ATI HD series cards to their tv's/monitors with speakers or audio systems.. the ATI HD series cards coming with a built in realtek HD audio chip.. when enabled it allows for the DVI/HDMI to do 7.1 LPCM audio either from the DVI port with a DVI to HDMI adapter or the HDMI port.. this means you no longer need a secondary sound card for lossless surround sound.. it can all go directly through the card..

so if you use your HD5850 to play movies/games on your tv then this applies to you.. if you dont.. then this doesnt apply to you..

So the 5770 can output up to 7.1 LPCM over HDMI?

well the 4000 cards will only do LPCM, the 5000 cards will also bitstream the HD codecs like TrueHD and DTS HD. but im not sure which software can take advantage of the bitstreaming yet.

I'm interested in LPCM only, can the 5000 cards still do lpcm?
Also, is there like a configuration menu in CCC to set up output settings?

yes they will still do lpcm and the setup is just like any other sound card. set the audio to hdmi and the speaker setup to whatever you have

Aye, in a way, ATI has been ahead of nVidia in the home-theatre game for a while. What with really cheap multi-media centered cards with Dobly TrueHD audio decoding, etc. If you have a PC already, you can buy an ATI cards + blu-ray read-only drive for cheaper than a PS3 and hook it up almost as easily for the same price.
