Hi, there.

Quick question.

Do you know if the Coolermaster extreme 650 W can connect a HD4890 or A 275 Nvidia GTX ?

I know this cards require 2x connectors
  • one 8-pin
  • one 6-pin

I believe my PSU has only 1x 6-pin connector. I don't see any 8 (I am not to good with the HW) It

Thanks

The Extreme power 650W is really a barely decent Seventeem 450W. So it is not suitable for a HD4890 or GTX 275. If you want to use those video cards, you need to get a new QUALITY 650W PSU (Corsair, Seasonic, PC P&C, etc) not some barely decent 450W PSU.

Yes, There is an error that I noticed in my signature, my PSU is the extreme 650

I run 4770's in Xfire with a CM 550W. Goto antec's site and use the psu calculator.

Probably the HD 4670. You don't need any other power connectors for the HD 4670. That's the highest video card I'd go with such a low quality PSU.

I wanted an upgrade, the 8800 GTS is working very good, h owever, some games are not fast enough. ...

It looks like I will have to sell this PC (I think I won't get much)
How much would you think this RIG will go trough EBAY?
System specs
Asus P5B-E, Core 2 Duo E6400, 2GB Patriot Extreme memory, 8800 GTS, DVD+RW, 650 W PSU (Coolermaster Extreme) and Sound Blaster x-gamer...

And buy a new one...

Price checks aren't allowed here in this part of the forum. It is only allowed in the subscription only General Mayhem part of the forum.

You don't have to sell the PC. Just upgrade the PSU and you'll be set for a GPU upgrade.

For the 19" monitor you have, the HD4850 is more than enough:
$105 - XFX HD-485X-YDFC Radeon HD 4850 512MB PCi-E Video Card

And for that, all you need PSU wise is this:
$50 - Corsair 400CX 400W PSU

You were about to spend $200 for a HD4890/GTX 275 so the $155 is within your budget.

There's a lot of people here saying you need too much for too little. The extreme unit has 2x6-pin plugs. It outputs 36A over dual 12V rails. It's not a bad unit, nor is it stellar or efficient. I've got one of these units in one of my rigs and it has powered 2x8800gt's, 2x9800gt's, and 1x2900XT.

It can handle either of those cards and will be just fine. No reason to upgrade if you don't need to. And you don't. The 600w version is a SevenTeam unit with a capable output of ~500 watts, which should handle what you want to do fine. Not sure what 'upgrades' were added to the 650w version to give it the 650w branding versus the 600w unit.

I understand you guys woud like to push him into getting the best quality product, but there's not anything wrong with what he's got, it's not a unit known for failing or any otherwise defects (save for the fan failing on some units), so there's really no reason for him to go out and waste money. And that 400W Corsair unit referenced above is going to give him very little headroom for the future if he were to upgrade, not to mention only 1xPCI-E connector. If you're going to upgrade, grab something like a Corsair HX620, or something that will otherwise grant you an "improvement" over your current unit, allowing you to run high-end dual gpus, otherwise stick with what you've get -- you'd be throwing away your money. I don't know why you would suggest him only getting a 4850 and even then upgrading his current PSU. It's fine for two 4850's let alone one.
