Upgrading season

So, yeah... I was lazy.... :p :D

... But I kind of knew the "answer" to my (rhetorical) question -- Will (the PTR-N881) fit? -- before I started "testing" things out.

For starters, here's the test bed:

The closeup shot of the PCI slots is to answer a question that was posted in the SFF forum thread for this board. The PCB is brown -- and yes, it's a Revision 1.1 board.

And here's the N881 with the 80x25mm fan attached:

As you can see, the heatsink is offset just enough to accommodate the fan. Space, however, is still an issue....

The long story short is that the size of both heatsinks (the HDT-SD964 and the PTR-N881) plus the lack of available space on the X58M makes for a generally bad fit. Regardless of how I position the heatsink portion of the N881, it ends up rubbing against something. Though I was eventually able to make things "fit" by positioning both heatsinks with the fans pointing upwards, it would be impossible to replicate inside the case with the PSU in place.

And to further emphasize the lack of overall space on the board:

... The heatsink portion of the N881 runs up against the retention bracket on the back of the GPU. Granted, I could remove the fan and just "flip" the heatsink, but the N881 would end up brushing against the SD964 in some way, shape, or form.

For comparison's sake, here's the HR-05 along with the video card and SD964:

I'll stick with the HDT-SD964 for now... but I may consider getting the Noctua NH-U9B later.

(Or, just to match, the Thermalright Ultima 90... if only enginurd could "find out" whether or not it's decent.... :p )

Damn, sorry to hear about the HSF problems.

Well at least we all know what HSF works with that particular setup.

I give up. I'm done playing with the damn thing.

Basically, the SD964 blocks my access to the hard drive... the same way that the S1283V did beforehand. I bought some mounting brackets so I could place the WD6401AALS up in the spare 5.25" bay and I ran into the same trouble that I had earlier trying to place it (with no brackets) into one of the upper two 3.5" bays (with the #@%&$! covers on them... #@%&$! Silverstone).

Right now, my choices are to either forget the whole thing and use the stock Intel HSF from this point onward -- apparently, I have no problems connecting things with the HR-05 IFX attached -- or run to the local B&M computer store, pay the "idiot tax," and get a hot-swap rack for the spare 5.25" bay. Considering the money that I've spent and the time that I wasted for essentially nothing, I'm pretty tempted to just stop the bleeding and move on.

Then again, the masochist in me is contemplating (if not outright planning) the next series of purchases, such as...

- More RAM, since I want to run multiple VMs (along with a couple of other resource-intensive tasks).
- Monitor and speakers... only now I'm waiting for the NEC MultiSync EA231WMi to be more widely available.
- Yes... I still want to switch out the fans....
- *sigh* ... And I'm still considering a second large-capacity HDD....
- ... Don't worry, I haven't forgotten about the miniITX firewall. (Someday... maybe....)
- You know, the Corsair H50 is starting to sound like a real good idea after all....

I guess I can put everything back together... first thing tomorrow....

Long story short: It looks like I'll be sticking with the SD964 after all.

Over the past few days, I've been having some start-up problems... to the point that I've disassembled and reassembled my system a few times this past weekend. And now, upon further inspection, I found out that one of the pins to the stock Intel HSF was broken... though I don't know when I broke it.

It looks like it's time to make another trip to Micro Center (unless I can find the parts that I need online for less -- and have them shipped to me a little quicker...).

Fuck.

Sorry to hear about the broken pin and the startup problems.

So you need a pushpin from a stock intel fan? I've got a few layin around.

So, uh... I was getting bored, and frustrated... so I went on a spur-of-the-moment drive to Fairfax, and....

... I ended up picking up a bunch of stuff from Micro Center.

Noctua NH-U9B 92mm CPU cooler - $59.99 (no, I couldn't get them to price-match it this time  )
PPA Int'l DiscArmor PortaDriver Internal SATA HDD rack - $17.99
Two Yate Loon D12SM-12 120mm case fans (packaged under Danger Den) - $23.98 (at $11.99 each  )
Four 0.5m (~18in) straight-to-right angle SATA cables - $19.96 (at $4.99 each)
StarTech ATX case front bezel wire kit - $5.99
(plus $6.40 local sales tax)

Total spent at Micro Center (this time) - $134.31
Total spent on myself - $1718

I know, I know... I spent way too much on parts that I could have purchased for less online... and I probably didn't need half of that stuff to begin with... but what the hell.... :p

We'll see whether or not I destroy something else tonight....

I know, I know... I spent way too much on parts that I could have purchased for less online... and I probably didn't need half of that stuff to begin with... but what the hell.... :p

Yeah I get that feeling too sometimes

Good luck.

Stupid question, but does anyone know how to remove a couple of stuck screws?

Yes, the spring AND the screws are part of my "newer, better" CPU cooler.

No, I don't really have an explanation for that....
noql1.gif

Hm... how about bending the spring... as if you folding it in half? But see, if they got in there just by being tossed around in a box, then you should be able to "shake" them free.

Now I know why my application for "Are You Smarter than a 5th Grader?" was rejected.

I've spent the past hour struggling with the screws, only to realize that by pushing them in the upward direction of the spring, I could "thread" them to the top. Problem is, that once I got them to the top, I had to use pliers to help pull them apart. (Hope that doesn't affect the resale value....)

Now I'm going to celebrate with... bedtime! Hopefully, nothing else goes wrong when I (try to) finish this build this weekend.

I'm shelving the Core i7 build -- yes, again  -- for now. The long story short is that I need one of the new LGA 1366 mounting kits for the Noctua NH-U9B. Even though I was able to use the LGA 775 kit (my board has holes for both), the LGA 775 kit started to bend the board. Considering all of the other mishaps that have occurred since I started building the damn thing -- has it really been two months already? -- I'm not going to risk breaking my board.

While I wait over the next week for (even) more parts to arrive, let's talk Windows 7. The long story short is that I'm buying a full retail copy, and I'm considering Windows 7 Professional. (I'm getting it so that I can transfer the license whenever I want, so unless you have a promo code or something else to help lower the cost, zip it.) Stupid question, but is it going to kill me to spend the $20 extra to get Ultimate instead? (I know that the features of Windows 7 Ultimate aren't worth the $320 price tag, but it's only $20 more than Professional.)

Also, does anyone have an ETA on the NEC EA231WMI-BK?

While I'm waiting, should I also start gathering parts for the mini ITX firewall? (Rhetorical question, I know....)

LOL! Yup, definitely. Might as well.

What features of Pro do you need?

Apparently this:

The long story short is that I want to play with Windows 7's XP Mode, which is only available with the Professional and Ultimate versions. Though I have an available copy of XP (Pro) and I could "replicate" XP Mode via VM with Windows 7 Home Premium, I actually want to compare the two versions. I've decided that one of the primary roles of this system would be to run and compare multiple VMs. (Impractical, I know... let's just say that I really, really want it, and go from there.... :p )

While I'm waiting, should I also start gathering parts for the mini ITX firewall? (Rhetorical question, I know....)
LOL! Yup, definitely. Might as well.

Based on our earlier "conversation," here's the tentative plan for the firewall box:

Case: M350 Universal Mini-ITX enclosure
PSU: picoPSU-120 120W DC-DC PSU
Motherboard: MSI Industrial CX700 or MSI Industrial IM-945GC

I'll probably conduct some more research on mini ITX parts this weekend.

I was able to order a few things from NewEgg earlier today....

Noctua NM-i3 mounting kit - $9.99
Noctua NF-B9-1600 92mm case fan - $19.99
(2x) MASSCOOL (Shin-Etsu G751) TIM - $5.98 (@ $2.99 each syringe)
(plus $9.48 shipping)

Granted, I could have bought a cheaper 92mm fan, and picked up a Socket 1366 mounting kit for free, but I wanted something to match what I have (the fan), and I wanted things to arrive a bit sooner (the mounting kit). I have no excuses for the TIM, except that NewEgg should've restocked on the MX-2/MX-3 when I made my order. :p

I also changed my NewEgg preorder... instead of getting the upgrade version of Windows 7 Home Premium (for my laptop), I'm getting the full OEM version at the same price. I also ordered the full retail version of... Windows 7 Ultimate. The long story short is that I could justify (to myself) paying the full price as this is the only time I plan on buying a full retail version (of Windows 7, for myself), and the cost of Ultimate is only $20 more than Professional.

(But don't you still have that full retail copy of Vista Ultimate? Uh, yeah... but this is Windows SEVEN we're talking about... and, uh, I don't know what I'm going to do with that....)

I'll still think about it a bit more... fortunately, I have until the 20th to cancel the pre-order. That said, however, I still plan on picking up one copy of Windows 7 on the 22nd.

mmmm... G751....

The 7 upgrade to your full retail vista should still give you the freedom to move it from system to system.

Where the heck is the 7 family pack?! :p

In this latest bout of early morning insomnia, I've just had this random, painful thought...

... but with all of the money that I've spent on just improving the internal cooling -- so far, I've bought three CPU coolers, three syringes of TIM, two chipset coolers, two mounting kits, and four fans -- I could have picked up the Corsair H50 when I first thought about it and would have been done with this mess by now.

I say that now, having seen the H50 in stock at a few Best Buy stores for MSRP ($80) as well as finding it at ZZF for $75 shipped.

The only thing that really stopped me from buying it was the fear of positioning the front-mounted case fan as an exhaust... and the possibility that I may have to mod my case to support a side-mounted fan or two....

Am I crazy to be thinking "Screw this" and running to Best Buy when it opens to pick up the H50? All of the reviews on it say that it performs better than stock cooling, and it would probably allow me to perform a little bit of overclocking (to, say, 3.2GHz).

So, my NewEgg package arrived earlier today, and....

H50box-1.jpg

Fuck it.

I'll play with everything this weekend, but for now, I'll hold onto the Noctua NH-U9B as Plan B.

The long story short is that I finally put my system back together, and I'm now reinstalling the Windows 7 RC (seeing that I've never activated it since I first started using it). As for the H50... it wouldn't fit....

Actually, I went for the two-fans-and-the-radiator option, as I felt that it was the best way to use cool the processor without having to switch the front-mounted fan to an exhaust fan or cut open the side of the case to accommodate addtional case fans. Guess what blocked everything? The HR-05 -- the one thing that I "needed" to have for this system.

So, rather than recreate my experiences with the S1283V, I decided to go with Plan B: the NH-U9B. And to make sure that nothing would short out the system, I decided to leave the motherboard on the tray (and placed paper spacers in between the board and the stands) but kept the tray outside of the case, for the time being. I attached the "portable" power and reset switches (from the front panel kit that I bought at MC a few weeks ago) to the front panel headers, and pressed the power switch. And now, the Windows 7 RC installation has just finished....

For the next round of purchases: The monitor that I'm considering is in stock at Provantage, so the Windows 7 pre-order has been cancelled. I'll simply buy a retail copy of Windows 7 when it reaches B&M stores on Thursday. I'm still leaning towards Ultimate due to the price... $320 plus tax is a bit easier for me to swallow than the $400+ price tag of Vista Ultimate when it first arrived. And I'm holding off on buying an OEM copy for my laptop, for now; Vista Home Premium has given me no problems thus far, especially now that I have the 64-bit version.

I'm still planning on buying new speakers, but they're now at the bottom of my priority list. With the holiday season coming up, however, I may postpone the mini ITX firewall project until next year.

I'm going to hold off on pictures for now. I really need to clean up the mess that I made this weekend....

This Core i7 build has become a series of lessons on how not to do things. Here's one more lesson -- this time, on Windows 7.

I went to Best Buy after visiting a few other places earlier this morning. (Contrary to what I originally believed, there was no "midnight launch" of Windows 7, let alone any full, retail copies of Windows 7 Professional or Ultimate available at most stores. But I digress....) I found two "sales people," one of them was a manager, and asked them, point blank, whether or not they had full version, retail copies of Windows 7 Professional or Windows 7 Ultimate available. The sales person said that she would check; the manager said that they "should have them." (That "should have them" becomes important a bit later....)

I walk over to the sales person, who was going through her OEM copies of Windows 7 Home Premium. I asked her again whether or not she had Windows 7 Professional or Ultimate and she thought that I was asking for a copy of Office 2007. I explained to her that I was looking for, yet again, a full version retail copy of either Windows 7 Professional or Ultimate and she shot me a look as if I was retarded while replying that all they had available was Windows 7 Home Premium.

(Yeah, I know... I should have kept the pre-order....

)

And now, having just returned from Best Buy, I just remembered reading an article a couple of months ago on how Windows 7 Ultimate won't be widely available at most B&M stores.

Oh, well... I can wait another week for it.

While we're on the subject -- enginurd, here's your family pack.

A quick update... I'm having sporadic internet issues (revealed to be caused by my ISP, which won't be fixed until they send a technician over next weekend), so I will be taking a "vacation" from the [H] this week. Which is just as well, since I purchased a few items over this past weekend:

Microsoft Windows 7 Ultimate Full Version - $319.99 (Microsoft Store)
G.Skill 3x2GB DDR3 1600 tri-channel kit - $134.99 (NewEgg)
Seagate Barracuda 7200.12 1TB HDD - $89.99 (NewEgg)
(plus $5.99 shipping charges)

Total spent this weekend - $550.96
Total spent on myself - $2399

(Yeah, I've nearly spent $2500 so far... on two computers, plus a few extras. Then again, I haven't "counted" the money that I've made so far from selling some of my old parts. And as soon as I can get some time to maintain a consistent internet connection, I'll start selling even more stuff.)

Don't worry, the next update should include some pictures... I figure it's going to be a while before I get a consistent enough connection to post more pictures. Absent a couple of fan grills -- maybe, for the fans on the NH-U9B -- I'll be finished tinkering with the mATX X58 system.

One more thing: I need some good recommendations on a 23-26 inch widescreen LCD capable of gaming, Photoshop, and movie watching. I'm starting to waffle on my monitor choices -- all of my choices seem to have major flaws in one or more areas -- but my old 19 inch LCD is starting to show signs of giving up the ghost soon. Oh, I'm not spending more than $500 on the monitor.

$320... OUCH! I typically just buy the retail upgrade. It could transfer from system to system, as long as the system its transferring to already has an existing OS license and the previous installation was deleted/removed.

Anyhow, have fun with those new parts... I finally have my test bench setup the way I like, so I'll probably start having some fun of my own soon, too. :D

Oh, and thanks for the link to the fampack... I got it from Costco instead ($125+tax... $138 total... slightly cheaper).

As I've already explained earlier, I'm only going to do this once... and the moment that I "reinstall" it onto another system, it would have practically paid for itself (assuming that the OEM price remains at around $170 two or three years from now).

Plus, $320 is a bit easier to swallow than $400 -- and I won't have to wait for a bunch of "extras." ;)

So what did you end up doing with that full retail copy of Vista Ultimate?

The copy of Vista Ultimate is going to my mom -- she "needed a new OS" ....

I haven't forgotten about this thread, but personal issues have derailed things a bit. For now, I have to scrap the mini ITX firewall and focus my efforts on "upgrading" my laptop again. Namely, I'm considering a new wireless card -- one with dual-band Wireless N capability -- a mini PCI Bluetooth adapter, a new, larger, HDD... and (possibly) an OEM copy of Windows 7 Home Premium.

It goes without saying that I've installed the new HDD and added the additional 6GB RAM kit onto the microATX SFF box. Pictures of the now-completed build will come this weekend.

As promised -- I know, eons ago  -- pictures:

I also decided to clean up the rat's nest of cables this time -- that's the real reason for the delay.

The long story short was that I used standard and releasable zip ties to bundle things together. I also picked up some adhesive-backed zip tie mounts for the inside of the case, but I ended up using a couple of openings inside the case to keep things (relatively) stationary. The good thing is that nothing is blocking the air flow throughout the case.

The hot-swap HDD bay was the solution to most of my problems from the start...

And no, you aren't seeing things...

... I picked up a new monitor this past weekend. The long story short was that my impatience started to take over yet again and I picked up a display model of the Samsung 2233SW from Micro Center. It was on clearance for $170 plus tax (its original price was $200).

Corsair needs to come out with fully modular PSUs, and custom cable harnesses for popular cases. :p

I'm sorry, was there text in that post above? :p (ie. thanks for the pics)

Good thread. Shame on the H50, not fitting; I like that cooler, it feels very steam punk.

Does Corsair H50 ship with AM3 bracket yet?

Mine came with the AM3 bracket.

Good thread. Shame on the H50, not fitting; I like that cooler, it feels very steam punk.

My problem came from my attempts to add a second fan onto it. It was able to fit just fine with one fan, but not with two. Given the size of my microATX mini-tower case, I decided that it wasn't worth the effort.

I bought more machine screws to mount a second fan onto the H50, but in my initial rush to put everything together, I attached the double-sided tape to the Socket 1156/1366 backplate, and it won't come off. Since I'm no longer going to use the H50, PM me if you're interested in taking it off my hands.

As a brief aside, my mom asked me to come up with a list of parts so she could build herself a small VM box. She didn't give me any requirements other than it being as inexpensive as possible. Here's my idea, as it stands now:

$100 - Antec NSK3480 microATX case with Earthwatts EA380 380W PSU (free shipping)
$99 - AMD Athlon II X4 620 (free shipping)
$80 - MSI 785GM-E51 microATX motherboard
$90 - Patriot G Series "Sector 5" Edition 2x2GB DDR3 1333 kit (free shipping)
$55 - Samsung Spinpoint F3 HD502HJ 500GB HDD (free shipping)
$28 - LG GH24NS50 DVD burner (free shipping)
=====
$452 - Subtotal (not including shipping, taxes, or rebates)

Despite what she didn't tell me, I believe that it's safe to assume that my mom will probably double the RAM amount and increase the HDD capacity, but she doesn't care about overclocking nor does she plan on using this machine for any sort of gaming. (She already have an OS in mind... no, not Vista Ultimate -- thanks for asking. :p )

While I'm well aware of the fact that virtually every component has some sort of combo deal available, I didn't find them suitable enough for the purposes of cutting costs. Hell, I've probably saved a bunch of cash simply by going with the NSK3480/EA380 "bundle."

Switching gears, a few FS/FT threads here are making me want to resume the mini ITX firewall project. I'll think about that project a bit more over the next day or so.

Funny story, but I decided to test my 19" monitor to see exactly what the problem was. Just for laughs, I swapped the old AC cable I used for the one that my new monitor was using... and it appears that it works just fine now. (I guess I now have a reason to buy a new DVI-D cable....)

The mini ITX firewall project has been "postponed" yet again. Shifting priorities -- and a possible move -- makes another laptop upgrade the more immediate "project." Stupid question time:

- Should I get the WD Scorpio Blue 640GB or the Hitachi Travelstar 500GB? (Or, where can I find head-to-head performance benchmarks on both of them?)
- Are there any internal (mini PCI or mini PCI-E) dual band 802.11n cards available?
- Does anyone have a cheap (64-bit OEM) copy of Windows 7 Home Premium for sale? :p
