I'm upgrading the rig in my sig. I have an 8800gtx and 4gb of PC-1000 coming in the mail ( traded stuff ) so I obviously need to upgrade my motherboard and processor. I found what I think would work well for me while staying in my $200 budget. Here's what I have in my cart.

Motherboard: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813130231

Processor: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819116072

Hard Drive: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822136218

I have to get a hdd to finish my gf's computer. The hdd also has a 10% off promo code. The total price with free shipping is $196.97. I plan on using this for gaming mostly. I also plan on overclocking the cpu as far as possible without temps getting too high or voltage getting too high. I realize that on stock cooling I may not get far. Will the cpu bottleneck the GPU?

The internal cache of that CPU is a bit castrated, may not be a big deal, I haven't looked at benchmarks myself, just pointing out an observation.

Have you researched G41 chipset overclocking? Most people use the more high end chipsets, P35/P45, the boards for the larger boards often have more robust power regulators and such and thus may be better suited. You can often get one for not much more, $70-90 range.

Not sure how good of an OC that mobo will be, but that is a good processor, and wont be a bottleneck for an 8800GTX.

HDD looks good as well.

x2 240 should get to 3.5-3.8 GHz with good hsf.

Suggested is Coolermaster Hyper 212 plus.

at stock would the 240 hold back the 8800gtx? If not then I'll just use the stock cooler and get as far as I can with that.

okay now what about the second motherboard I posted? Is it decent and able to oc mildly at least?

if you order from newegg, and you go over $200, you can get $20 cashback if you use paypal.

also, you can add bing cashback to mix, its either at 6% or 10% right now... not going to explain how it works but visit www.bing.com/cashback

just trying to help you save some money :)

Sweet :) I'll look into that for sure. Thanks a million!

these are native dual core cpu, if you are looking at unlocking cores x2 545/550 are good bets.

Yeah Bing cashback is awesome. Just make an account and whenever you buy online just go through Bing first then to the store and you'll get a free rebate after 60 days. It's much easier than filling out manufacturer rebates.

Well it's a HiPro 400w PSU... I've had it for about a year and it's been really stable for me so far.

Upgrade your PSU. Its too low quality coupled with its low amperage will not allow that PSU to handle this upgrade for long. Bare minimum, I'd recommend this PSU for your planned system:
$80 - Antec TruePower New TP-550 550W PSU

I won't be able to purchase a power supply for about a week or two. I will get one ASAP though :) Thank you

Yeah don't get the other parts before you get the new PSU. Not worth risk to your hardware using that Hipro.

Well I ordered everything else yesterday and it's already been packed and shipped ( thanks newegg and your fast shipping ) so I can't change my order now. I will probably try to borrow one from a friend to power the rig until I buy one. Is it possible to not spend $80 on a powersupply but still get one that is decent? I was looking at the Xclio stablepower 500w on newegg. Is it any good?

The Xclio 500W StablePower isn't as good as either the Corsair or the Antec PSU.

Keep the gaming at a minimum until you can afford the Antec TP-550.

Maybe if there was a sale on a quality PSU or something but generally the answer is no. That 8800GTX requires good quality power, something that most sub $80 PSUs cannot provide.

The XClio Stablepower 500W isn't that good of choice any more since there are significantly better quality power supplies for the same price such as the Corsair 400CX or the Antec EA430 PSU. However none of the three aforementioned PSUs would be a good choice for a setup like yours.

So, again, I highly recommend spending the extra cash for a high quality and high power PSU like the Antec Truepower New 550W PSU. What PSU would you be borrowing from a friend?

Okay thank you for your help. It is much appreciated!

I don't know what PSU's my friend has. I'll see what he has and if the power rating isn't very high then I won't even bother posting here to see if it's good. Unless it's corsair or something like that.

It's not about the power rating, its about the total amperage available and the quality of PSU itself. There are 700W PSUs can be shittier than some quality 450W PSUs out there.
