TF2 - Next class update, Soldier?

Soldier is the easiest class to play! It requires the least amount of skill. Oh let me just shoot the floor in front of everyone while I run around like this is Quake.

I'd agree that it's the easiest class to play ok and get a kill here or there (Well engineer is stupid easy... all you have to do is play a round and see where other engineers place stuff), but it's also very easy to dodge a rocket spamming soldier. It's actually pretty damn hard to get good with the soldier and be able to air juggle enemies.

Soldiers rocket jumps are easy but he takes allot of skill to be *good* at. Timing rockets is tricky, being able to predict where someone is going to land is tricky. Pyro (with backburner)takes the least skill, however is one of my favorite classes.

The soldier is easy to play because the game is PACKED with newbs which when playing the stock maps have incedibly predictable movement patterns, largely to do with the incredibly linear map design.

With crits on rockets are doing insane amount of splash damage, playing the solider well simply isn't that hard at all, some of the mid air shots are impressive but the games hitboxes are huge and it's all really close/medium range areas so it's not that hard.

I find it interesting that people adhere to classes so ardently.

I play for the team and situation. No teleporters? I will switch to engineer. Lots of soliders? I am switching to a pyro with the standard flamethrow so that I can reflect and deflect rockets. Etc., etc.

I personally feel the game is very well balanced and that most people play how they want to play -- which is fine, more power to you -- instead of playing to counter what is on the field or playing for a tactical advantage.

Said like a pyro.

It's funny how many people hate on the pyro... it's a good class if played properly...

It's annoying when you play in a friendly fire server though because the flames don't affect teammates so pyros can spam all they want, but demo's / soldiers have to watch their fire a lot more because of it.

To play a Soldier well is an art.

Most players I see on pubs play it badly. Few rocket jump properly or even master the crouch, jump, fire technique. Very few use the rocket splash properly. All it should take is two rockets max to finish off nearly all classes, one to lead them and the second on the spot they land not four spammed rockets as is often the case.

I rarely see soldiers taking shortcuts with rocket jumps as they don't know how to use it as an advantage, same with normally inaccessable ambush points.

I have only ever seem one other player play like this. Perhaps because I have played as a Soldier a lot lately and am now very good at playing him and can dominate an area with ease that I see how badly on the whole it is played. (Modesty hat off ;))

So I would say in fact it is a very challenging class to play to its potential.

I can't wait for the update, the practice will pay off!

Is this affirmation that the Soldier is next in line for an update, or is it a fake?

http://gaming.icrontic.com/news/team-fortress-2-soldier-update-info-leaked

New Soldier unlockables
New Soldier achievements
Item Trading
Tweaks to random item drops
King of the Hill game mode
New maps
“Fairly major” engine tweaks that increase performance and “safety”

Edit

It appears this is a a fake blog, see here. http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/showthread.php?t=923774

I was taken in dammit

I would say the soldier is accessible, but hard to master. You have to have skill to be a solider and be an effective team player. Getting kills with the soldier is one thing, but rocket jumping up to the point and killing everyone on the platform on your way down is another thing. Rocket jumping up through that little square hole near the front of the base in two fort is another thing. The class does reward you for skill and practice.

Not related to an update, and I couldn't find the TF2 thread/relevant, but dang, does a quad help out with Source games. My FPS remains now at a constant 60 FPS no matter what level, as obviously my graphics card can definitely keep with the low-stress GPU tasks of TF2.

My old dual core E8400 would always be the limiting factor (even with OC'ed) at my resolution and with Source games... CPU hungry games :pP

I noticed this as well when I recently dropped a GTX275 into my Core2Duo Machine. There was improvement but I got the sense there was still CPU related slowdown.

The answer, I think, is that the Quad will probably help to the extent it is faster clock for clock. I am not sure if the mere presence of four cores is what makes the difference. On my Core2Duo @ 3.3GHz, I am at 100% CPU utilization in TF2 and even though frames are mostly at 60 there are still some drops in the situations that caused trouble with my 8800GTX. I tested the same game with the same graphics card on an i7 920 machine at stock and the difference was night and day in that there was zero slowdown.

People on these forums say that Core2Duo is enough but I honestly don't think they have done a subjective comparison of the two.

Soldier:
Click and hold primary fire, loads up and shoots out 4 rockets in a spread. However, maybe have this take up 8 rocket ammo or something. Or have them move slower, or maybe do less dmg per rocket.

I dunno.

It'll be interesting... they can't make the weapons more powerful, they have to change the role of the soldier.

Like the backburner with the pyro forces the pyro sneak/hide/ambush the other team... whereas with the normal flamethrower you can be offensive and airblast rockets/nades/arrow/jarate's back at the other team. The fire axe is kinda gimmicky... you gotta get your enemies on fire then hit them with the axe, I guess useful if you run out of ammo with your flamethrower but you just set them on fire.

Kritzkrieg makes the medic vulnerable but is devastating with a heavy/demo/soldier... but a regular uber pyro can be more effective in situations.

So that's the thing with this update for the soldier/engy/demo... it has to just change the role of the class a little bit, it can't just make their weapons more powerful.

It seems like every update makes the game slower and slower.

Pushing the cart or capturing a point calls for Uber as you WILL need invulnerable to take out sentry nests. Kritzkrieg is king of defense though. Nothing like taking out a 6man rush on the cart with a kritz'd heavy or demo.

As for my rig. I have Q6600, 4gb ram, 8800GTS 640. Debating about buying a new GPU or going SSD. I see a few minor stutters here and there, probably need to upgrade the 8800GTS

that's how it is with source, the brute force of faster / more efficient clocks will get you smoother frames since most of it is unthreaded. use rivatuner or something that can keep track of usage per core and you will see no matter what kind of proc, your first core is pinned while the rest of them sit idle. they managed to offload some of the particle effects recently but it isn't really enough to make a difference, a small amount of work just spills onto the 2nd core for little gain. so for tf2, yes it's true in the sense that it can't use more than 2 cores, and it doesn't rely on your gpu as much as it should.

I'm on an e6600 @ 3.2 myself, and it's working pretty good for me. I got it capped at 60 for my lcd and it stays there most of the time, but it hurts in the huge firefights, where your i7 would be able to keep it afloat I sometimes dip into the upper 20's. switching to gtx260 from 8800 helped smooth it out as well, but most of that power is wasted on cpu load.

Sweet Jesus. How the hell is that possible. Are they playing on a CRT monitor cause I haven't found an LCD that can handle that type of twitch shooting.

This guy is even more amazing http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ccck4JZ165A.

I had lost interest in TF2 but these videos make me wanna play again.

you should check out wonderwall's work too, his runs of rj_rocketeer are pretty amazing, good training maps that might interest you. this kind of accuracy is inhuman, I don't even have the patience to finish it let alone a 2 minute run.

its actually pretty simple to be that good at TF2... its sooo damn slow....

especially if you were a RA3/Tribes player.... then TF2 seems like bullet time :)

surely both Fragga and Frozenshift have LCDs

I use a 32" HDTV and it is perfect

Edit, I'd love to know how many days Frozenshift spent in tr_airshot/tr_rocket_shooting, I'm sure being an ex Quake player doesn't hurt either....He has 565 hours as a Soldier

Yeah, Vanilla is damn slow. That's why I play faster modded servers.

Lol, yeah cause spamming nades is sooooo hard.

Only bad Demos spam nades

Again it goes back to playing the class to its potential. Grenade jumps, stickies hidden - very powerful offensive and defensive class played well.

Oh, and I cannot mention TF2 without saying this: Fuck Pyros.

What?! No love for pyros? I've logged waaaaay too many hours as a pyro. They're not that tough -- I routinely lose to the likes of Heavies and especially Scouts with force-a-nature.

<matrix>If you seen an ag.. err... scout... you do what we do. RUN</matrix>

I think the afterburn is absolutely ridiculous and needs the length to be cut by like.. half. I don't really have a problem with him most of the times; I wipe the floor with them when playing as a Demo.

The real reason I hate them is because I used to play Spy non-stop.

Oh, I just suck then :). I never fully adjusted to playing on LCDs and still can't stand playing FPS games on anything less than a CRT @ 100hz refresh rate. Might have to splurge for a gaming LCD monitor once something good comes out.

Although I don't own a CRT, I have to admit, I played on a 85Hz monitor once, and it was almost literally night and day compared to my normal 60Hz monitor.

After I splurge on everything else I want, I'll try and save up for one of those 120Hz monitors, provided they finally come out at 1920x1200... not at the small 1680x1050 atm :(...

somewhat true but tf2 is based on team play, and not speed mechanics so that really has nothing to do with anything. even though soldiers here are much slower than the old school rocketeers, he is just as much if not more maneuverable.

some nice pro-comp play

I've done all of those shots before, you can't tell if he's been recording demo's for 3 months and playing 20-30 hours a week or not. It's impressive if you did that all in the same game, not so much if it's been 200 hours of footage to go through, which is what most of these frag videos consist of.

But I've definitely seen Quake 3 (like that video above) and Tribes / Tribes 2 players much more impressive... used to play competively in T2 when it was popular... shit was way more ridiculous/complex than TF2 has ever been.

TF2 is not really competitive, and anyone thinking they're "pro" at any class would get dominated in any other game... competitively that is... I play TF2 cause it isn't competitive, It turns into a job trying to play in a clan / competitively.

TF2 breaks demos... so you're really at mercy of when TF2 gets updated.

I guess you could record the demos then export the video out, but that's a lot of raw/uncompressed video/audio that needs to be stored if you want to make an HD frag video.

Also, I wish I had time for competition play. I bet the people who do comp play are either 1) really really easy load (insert X major) students, unemployed, or something. I mean, right now as a full time intern I barely can get time to play TF2 for an hour or two a day. Even as a student, I barely got time outside of homework, classes, and on-campus organizations. In TF2 you have to be a good Scout, Demo, Soldier, or Sniper. In Quake3 you have to be a good Scout, Demo, Soldier, AND Sniper at the same time :)

TF2 you need to be good at playing the Spy, it's a class played well that can make a massive difference particularly when clearing nests of sentries. In fact you need to be good at all classes depending on the situation.
