early June build: input please

Thanks for the advice. I think I would like to get a full tower in order to have more space to work with, though the Silverstone FT01 has gotten rave reviews and I haven't heard anyone complain due to lack of space.

Also I have not been able to hunt down reviews that say any full tower matches my criteria, which is quiet operation & good cooling.

What are my options?

The Sony optical drive is out of stock. (It may be easier for you to omit that for the time being.)

Parts-wise, there's really nothing that I see that needs to be critiqued further -- we've been down a few blocks already. But see if you can find a combo deal or two to lower the overall costs of everything.

I'm not the expert on power supplies -- I normally follow Danny's lead.

If you can find the Seasonic PSU for $160 (check to see that it's selling from the US... believe it or not, not all .com stores originate in the US), get it from that site.

It's not available anymore, that's why I cannot purchase it. At the price point on newegg it's a tad out of my reach.

Does anyone know of the NEXUS 850? It seems like a quality European manufacturer.

Got a good rating from 3dGameMan, whoever that is. Also 15dcb, that's inaudible!

I wouldn't trust that site for buying the PSU.

I know nothing about the NEXUS 850. Most of the PSUs that I've recommend have come from reviews made here at the [H] or from JonnyGURU.com. Maybe you could find a quiet PSU from SilentPCReview.com and double-check with one of the other two sites to see whether or not it's a good choice.

silentPCreview recommends it. I cannot find other sources of information about it, since it is a relatively small European company.

Argh... Should I buy the NEXUS or pay 100$ more for a few more % efficiency in the SeaSonic? help!

610 watts is fine for now but I plan on getting a SLI/CF when the GTX300 series comes around.

Its got an adjustable 5v rail so if you need more power you can get it. SLI wont be a problem.

While Nexus makes great and quiet fans, that doesn't neccessarily mean that they'll select/make quality PSUs. Looking at the specs, it only has 63A on the +12V rail. That's a bit low considering that the Corsair 850TX, Antec Signature 850W, Seasonic M12D 850W, Enermax Revolution 85+ 850W and other confirmed similar quality 850W PSUs all have 70A on the +12V rail. The Corsair 750TX and PC P&C Silencer 750W have 60A on the +12V rail.

Generally when a PSU has less amperage than other PSUs of equal wattage, they're usually not that good. There are exceptions of course when those PSUs are put under proper testing (like done by HardOCP.com or jonnyguru.com). When it comes to PSUs, stick to known quality PSUs as unknown quality PSUs might be of pretty damn low quality. Also, I didn't see a single recommendation for that Nexus PSU from SilentPCReview.com.

Ok I'm gonna lay it out for you: If you want quality, quiet, modular AND 650W+ of power, you're gonna have to spend the extra cash for either Seasonic M12D or the Antec Signature 850W PSUs. Modular + quality already increases the cost by at least $20 to $30. Quiet, quality, modular and more than 650W of power has a very very high price premium.

Do you honestly need a quiet AND modular PSU?

Its got an adjustable 5v rail so if you need more power you can get it. SLI wont be a problem.

The 5V rail does not matter that much considering that most PC parts draw power from the +12V rail. In addition, despite being called the "Silencer", many people have reported and from my own personal experience, that PSU is relatively "loud" compared to my Corsair 520HX.

Quiet is a given, modular is preferable.

OK so Nexus is out of the question. Seasonic M12 is my only remaining option then, yes?

I've also looked at ENERMAX MODU82+ but @ 625 watts it's a tad weaker than I would have liked.

Not sure if they'll increase power efficiency in the next gen GTX300 series, but I doubt it. So if I'd like to do the SLI later, looks like I'm stuck with the $250 price tag.

Or am I missing something here, Danny?

also, what do you think of the Cooler Master 840 vs the Silverstone FT01?

I know cases are mostly personal preference but I'm having extreme difficulty deciding...

No not missing anything. Yeah the Seasonic M12 is your only remaining option if you want enough power for GT300 SLI, quiet, modular and quality. More than likely the GT300 series (at least on the high end) will use up more power than many of the current GT200 series.

Yeah, just flip a coin for this. I personally like the look of the Coolermaster 840 more than the Silverstone.

Okay thanks. I'm going to be placing my order in a few hours so if anyone out there would like to give me any last minute advice, I welcome it.

I dont know why you say that pc power and cooling is not the best manufacturer out there, they get the best reviews and are hands down the highest quality PSU's out there. If you take my advice and buy the silencer 610 you will be very happy, read the reviews on any of the websites out there and they will back me up. Its the only PSU that has been mentioned that recieved an 80+ certification.

While PC P&C do select and sell quality PSUs, they are by no means the highest quality PSUs out there. The Seasonic M12D and Antec Signature 850W PSU has far better DC output quality than the PC P&C Turbo-Cool 860. In addition, Seasonic makes many of PC P&C's PSUs.

However, your suggestion is a bit moot considering that the OP specifically requested a modular PSU. PC P&C do not make modular PSUs out of some FUD shit they spread.

No one is saying that PC P&C PSUs are crap. Far from it. It's just that it does not fit two of the OP's highest requirements for a PSU: Quiet and modular. PC P&C does not make modular PSUs nor are their PSUs quiet compared to other PSUs made by Antec, Seasonic, Enermax Pro/Modu 82+ series, and Corsair.

EDIT: Oh and most of the PSUs I've mentioned in my posts in this thread have received 80+ certification.

Uhm... The SeaSonic M12 has an 80+ SILVER designation so it is also very efficient.

I'm just about to put through this order.

Criticisms, concerns, comments, please.
Criticism: The GTX285 is not a good buy IMO since you can get the equally performing GTX280 for $65 less:
$280 - BFG Tech BFGEGTX2801024OCXE GeForce GTX 280 1GB PCI-E Video Card (probably should buy this today considering that it's a sales price IIRC)

Comment: Your build is about $1000 more than the price of the prelim setup I provided early on but isn't that much faster (20% at most due to the SSD) but is certainly more quieter due to the PSU. Then again, I didn't include a case or a secondary storage drive. Still roughly at least $800 more than the prelim setup.

Concern: Personally, don't like the color scheme on that DFI mobo. :)

The GTX285 is also on sale today, and it's factory overclocked as well as having EVGA's wonderful support.

RE: MOBO- Honestly, neither do I. But I like the company & the product is equivalent of the other high end X58 motherboards, so I think it's a good buy.

I'll take that into consideration. The PSU plays a big role seeing as it's $150 more than the one your provided. And peripherals (mouse, pad, keyboard)

I hope it's as good as they say. Or maybe I'll get the Enermax MODU+85 625W instead... argh but then I'd have to buy a new PSU later this year.

Decisions, decisions...

You could always sell the old one if you get a new one. Of course, you won't get the same amount of money you paid for it, but you'll get some of it back, which should help in the decision making. And, if you don't end up going to SLI, then you saved some cash. ;)

more quieter? :p

BTW, I finally got my 2x SSDs... here's some screenshots...

Wow. Well, I'm impressed... maybe when the price drops further I'll invest in a second 80GB intel x25m.

Heh, yah, those two Vertex drives cost me $100 each after $20 rebate per drive. Still less than a single X25M 80GB, hehe. I've been waiting for a hookup on those X25M's, but its taking too long, lol.

Okay well I've placed the order and should have it by Friday.

Got the Dell 2408WFP for $500 incl shipping + tax

And the Logitech Z5500 5.1 Surround Sound for a total of $300 w/ shipping/tax sure it's nothing amazing but with my M-Audio 1010 it'll sound good.
Or am I horribly wrong... I think I can still cancel the shipment from amazon. Maybe not. So if I'm wrong let me know ASAP.

What are your thoughts on the choices I made? Good/bad or no opinion?

http://secure.newegg.com/WishList/PublicWishDetail.aspx?WishListNumber=15665907

I got everything on that list except for the pioneer drive, replaced it with a BLU-RAY/HD burner from LG.

So that's that. Hope everything goes well, would hate it if something is not compatible, ew... The horror stories I've heard. Any warnings/advice for the actual building?
