I am putting together a machine for a friend and I was going to use some extra parts I had lying around as he is somewhat strapped for crash.

He has the following parts:

GA-MA790X-UD4P
Antec 300 case
Western Digital Caviar SE16 640GB
G.SKILL 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR2 - PC2 8500
AMD Athlon X2 7850 Black Edition Kuma

I have an older video card he is going to use for now and a DVD rom drive and then an older power supply.

Well as I am putting it together I now notice that the power supply is one of the older 20 pin power supplies. Yea forgot to check on that before I ordered all the other parts and so now he needs a power supply.

So what would be a good suggesting for him to get for around 60 bucks? I know eventually he will be upgrading the video card (I think I am giving him a 7900 GS - but don't remember off-hand) but he won;t be going all out on the video card for now.

Your help would be appreciated.

Thank you.

I don't recommend that at all.
They're generic power supplies, and they will absolutely not do the rated 650w / 30a@12v.

In fact, I don't recommend a single power supply from geeks.com. None.

Indeed. Might as well have gotten a decent 550-600W PSU, instead of two crappy "650" watts.

while crappy they might be and cheap, it has suited my budget and needs back then.. he did say he is strapped for cash. I was once in his position and used two PSU from there to power two desktops w/ 8800 gts 320 each. since they are so cheap. he can always get a better one down the road. whether it's the right or wrong option, its still an option to think about.

A bad option. He risks killing his components. Keep in mind that the PSU is one of the most important parts of the computer. Buying a low quality PSU puts all of the other components at risk, and I doubt that's something the OP wants to do. Also, he only needs one power supply and not 2, so the two that I mentioned (Corsair 400CX & BFG LS-550) are the best choices under $60.

No, it isn't an option to think about. Even on a budget, a poor-quality PSU should not even be considered since there is a good chance that it will cause issues with any moderately-powerful PC.

BFG LS-550 - $58

Definitely this choice if you don't care for rebates and don't mind buying from a different site.

Oh and I concur with Zero82z and PC_User: It is not worth considering, unless you're A) horribly misinformed or B) ultra life or death desperate, buying those Geeks.com PSUs. Just because those PSUs are running PCs with GTS 320MB now doesn't mean that they'll power the PC for long or have not caused long term damage to the PC.

i never said he needed two. i mentioned two is because I got two and they worked very well for me. I'm just speaking from experience when i was on a very tight budget.

yes, doing what I did is very risky & I should of never mentioned it. I take it back. You're right PSU is very important part of your PC and you shouldn't gamble on it. I did and it has worked for me is all im saying. Plus, i used the PSU on older PCs.

Thanks for all your help guys/gals/its, I appreciate it and I did go with the corsair and bought it from Newegg as they also had a 20% coupon going with the rebate.

Now they just need to get off their butts and ship it to me.
