So I am on Chapter 3 of Dead Space and to my surprise it's a blast! Without reading through a 15+ page thread, I didn't find any threads like this so here goes. What items do you recommend purchasing? What about upgrading? So far I have saved all of my nodes except one for a door in chapter dos, and another for upgrading the damage on the plasma cutter. I have purchased the flame thrower to deal with those super tiny critters but it doesn't seem to do much against the bigger enemies. Just wondering what weapon combinations to invest in before I'm balls deep and have wasted lots of nodes and/or credits. Thanks

I saved my game in front of a shop and tried all the guns with all the upgrades. By far the best and most fun gun for me was the Pulse Rifle. I could run around pretending to be Bill Paxton yelling 'game over man!' every time aliens popped out at me. Tangent here but I thought fear1 was a really crappy non-scary game; I don't know what the fuss was about. I shit my pants 2 and a half times playing this game.

How do you shit your pants a half time? Your pants are either shit in or not, right?

The gun that uses sawblades is by far the best... but you'll find it totally useless around the end of chapter six. I never got past there, so I couldn't tell you if it becomes useful again. I put most of my credits into buying ammo and/or upgrading my suit (air capacity, armour, etc).

Don't buy air, health, or ammo.

Don't use nodes to upgrade stasis, kinesis, air, or HP.

Also, the ripper is good in the beginning, but sucks later on. I forget what the big gun is called, but it isn't good for much. I used it against the bosses with yellow pustules. I wouldn't bother upgrading it.

As far as using nodes for doors, it's your call. I can tell you I never found anything really awesome behind one of those doors. Mostly it was just ammo. Then again, I felt I wasn't getting much out the nodes themselves either. Woohoo, I can reload 0.1 second faster!

I recommend the upgrading your health to the max. As for weapons, I liked the Pulse Rifle and the Ripper.

I basically upgraded my armor, hp and main weapon, then when those were all maxed I bought more air duration. I never bought another weapon the whole game. You end the game having a few hundred thousand credits and probably 10-15 nodes if you don't get anything extra.

LMFAO!!!!

I cant comment about your questions...but I must say, after reading your post, It has sparked an interest in this game for me that other threads about the game have not. Thanks :)

I spend nodes to upgrade my suit to max health. As for weapons, the plasma cutter and the line gun are pretty good. The ripper was good mainly because I got a shit ton of ammo for it, and I ended up using that one a lot. However, it doesn't knock back the enemies as much as the other guns, and the range is kinda limited. I found the flame thrower completely useless. Like you, I purchased that to deal with the tiny monsters, but in the end, I found the ripper or plasma cutter do a better job dealing with those. Also of note: the flame thrower doesn't work in a vacuum. took me a little while to realize this. :p

I think I finished the game with the plasma cutter, the line gun, the ripper and the contact beam. The contact beam takes a while to charge, so it is not useful in a lot of situations. But it does a LOT of damage, and if you can hit something with it, it is usually a one shot kill. I used it on the bosses, and for long range 'sniping' when possible.

I didn't spend any nodes on stasis, kinesis, or air. I never used stasis or kinesis except where required by the game, and there always seemed to be air refills when I was in vacuum.

I played on medium difficulty, it is probably different on other difficulty levels.

I maxed the force gun and my rig. I felt invincible towards the end.

That's considered a shart... :p

Also, just wanted to comment that I'm on Chapter 4 currently... and I'm facing the same questions. I really don't seem to have a clear direction about how/what to upgrade. Even reading this thread I'm still kinda like "eh.. no one seems to know!" Should I just keep upgrading my main plasma cutter then I guess?

Deadspace is a *great* game, for anyone reading this thread that wants an opinion. It's just a well done, polished, and fun game. I'm playing it on my xbox and generally I can't stand FPS games on consoles (didn't like Halo.) Deadspace is an exception.

Fully upgraded plasma cutter is the way to go. I'm about halfway through my second playthrough (this time on insane or w/e it's called?) and the plasma cutter is the gun to use. You can also use the ammo you pick up for other weapons your carrying to sell at the store for more medkits/ammo for the plasma cutter (on higher difficulty, lower difficulties you don't really run out of ammo)

yep

Plasma cutter is the only real gun you need, though I found it going through more ammo then I liked when it got really intense in CQB.
I played through using the plasma cutter and ripper only.
I only used the ripper because its better when you get swarmed or CQB attacked by multiple enemies.
Or when u get attacked by the little spider swarms. Its not worth using a dozen plasma shots when u can kill them all with a single sweep from the ripper. Ripper is also good for taking down heavy targets when u hit them with stasis. Deals excellent damage over a good duration using little ammo.

Gotta remember, you find ammo according to the weapons you carry. You will still find the odd random ammo, but if you carry the plasma cutter and ripper, you will find mostly plasma and ripper ammo. Same if you use another weapon.

Personally the line gun was my preferred weapon. With the plasma cutter being a close second. The ripper I only ever used for that dude that regenerates constantly so I didn't waste tons of ammo. In the end I had my suit, plasma cutter and line gun all fully maxed out. As Peter Griffin would say..."Friggin Sweet".

I used plasma cutter (starter gun), ripper, and line gun. The ripper is what I used most of the time, unless I needed distance. The line gun is great if you have a couple enemies that are running at you; you can kneecap them in one shot. The ripper was good because if you have good aim, you can finish off 1-2 enemies with a single blade, and have ammo overflowing that you can sell to buy more upgrades.

Like people above me have said, the only gun you really need is the Plasma Cutter. Once you max that gun out, limbs will be flying off very easily. :D

Line Gun + Flamey is all you need. Of course, I've played through it my second time and have enough money to max out all the guns.

max your health.
line gun is cool
saw blade ones is awesome, i LOVED running around with it and cutting anything into pieces
the first gun u get, i upgraded the dmg on it and it was awesome, the added dmg helped a lot....
i found the game better b.c u coulnt just kill something REALLY fast with shootin anywhere.....

I upgraded the shit out of my stock gun, since ammo was the most plentiful for that, plus it really ends up being a shitkicker fully powered.

I also enjoyed using the pulse rifle. Creepy mutant babies love the pulse rifle. So do those little bug thingy's that you run into.

Yeap finally finished the game yesterday. I just knew about the chick. 8) Gotta start again and buy the Military Suit soon.

I loved Dead Space. It's as well-polished as Call of Duty 4.

I'm with those who recommend the Pulse Rifle. Great call to the guy who said it reminded him of Hudson in Aliens. I thought the exact same thing!

Max out your suit and the Pulse Rifle... then kick some alien ass!!!

I did health and standard plasma cutter thing... Works great.

I dare anyone to use the Ripper on a surround sound system with the volume up. Your ears will eventually explode, I'm on my second pair.

What's up with EA anyway? This and Mirror's Edge, 2 great games in succession. Shocking
