With COD4 being quite aged (i never got it for PC) and COD:WaW getting really lukewarm to shitty reviews.. what's the FPS to get till Battlefield:BC2/1943 seeing as how that's not coming for a while?

Or rather, what FPS are people playing these days?

COD4 is still very popular and I foresee it being around for quite a while.

Is the population still pretty high? Pity its still $50 despite being out for a year+.

I do also have TF2/CS 1.6/CSS/L4D/QuakeLive covered already ;)

Just curious what else people were playing.

Population is huge in Cod4. Xfire numbers to prove it. Its only being beat regularly by WoW. I would HIGHLY recommend trying CoD4 if you have yet to. Its probably the best FPS to come to PCs IMO. I've played tons of FPSs too...

So your skipping out on cod5, because of reviews? sucks for you :(

Cod5 is an awesome game, single is decent, but if your purchasing a cod game, you will realize that the games main fun is in multi. It might be just a cod4 with a ww2 skin, but i can say the same about it from cod2, its just a cod2 with a modern skin. I guess it sucks too? :p

Anyways, have you tried cod:uo? I still rank uo higher than 4/5 and i have the most fun on it. Another shooter i always play is bf2/2142 and l4d, i can keep playing those games for years to come.

Counter Strike: Source

I had my fling with L4D and TF2 but I always come back to CSS.

Just the whole weapon feel and aiming is perfect. Also I hate deathmatch. I love the way in CSS each spawn feels important and every kill feels like you earned it.

COD5 isn't made by Infinity Ward, and you can tell. COD1, 2, and 4 are the only true CODs to me.

So just because its not made by infinity ward its not a real cod to you?

I do agree that cod5 single was a bit too linear, but then again what cod aint? Cod5 is fine, i enjoy its multi as much as i enjoy cod4's.

So what will happen if modern warfare 2 becomes the same story as cod5? Not that it will happen, but im a be cracking up if it does and users have no excuse since it was made by infinity ward.

Anyways, to the op, i say try cod5, if you enjoy ww2 based shooters, you will like it, most users have gotten bored of it, which is why it does not appeal to them anymore, that or just people ignorance that the game was not made by infinity ward. You can find the game on here for $25-35 at most.

Like i also said, Try Bf2/2142/L4D/TF2/Cod:Uo which are the ones i play on a regular basis.

I have to agree with the man

Cod1, 2 and 4 are the best they ever made. and It was all done by IW.

I have cod5, but the population sucks for MP :/.....and so does the gameplay.

The gameplay is the same imo, Run around shoot people, use your abilities when you get killing streaks, get killed by dogs, repeat lol

I do agree that cod1, 2, 4 are indeed better, but cod5 is not far behind, as far as multi, i rate cod4/5 the same, just goes on what sort of gamestyle you like more, in the meaning of modern/old school.

I actually wouldn't mind playing either COD4 or COD5.. but what appeals most to me is whether there's a lively online populace for either. I was curious whether COD4 > COD5 in that aspect. Personally, i haven't played much of either, so I can't say I would prefer COD4 to COD5 based on the fact that IW makes it. I have heard more people praising COD4 than COD5 and critiquing it more. Great to hear feedback though.

I have played BF2/2142, but figured the online community to be rather sparse now or full of bots. I did also have QuakeWars, and actually enjoyed that but same problem.. seems to be full of bots on servers. Or really insane pros.

For some reason, I just can't get too into TF2.. it's a good game and I enjoy it from time to time but I can't play that competitively. (even though many others can.)

I love L4D too, but that doesn't satisfy this gaming need.

I'm personally looking for a tactical, "realistic" (real guns, military etc) shooter.. preferably urban warfare.. so I guess CoD/BF series lol.

TF2 and L4D are addicting. I'd wait on purchasing L4D because they have yet released new content. Four months into the game and we're all still playing the same two maps over and over. It's also a pain in the ass with no way to control rage quits during a match. During this past week, for example, I have only been able to enjoy 1 out of about 20 games because the other team will rage out. I suppose it is still satisfying to rage them.

I also have COD:WAW and love it, especially the hardcore tactical realism mode of play. I haven't read many of the reviews but I'd guess the negative reviews have to do with how similar it is to COD4. Sure, the setting is different, but the weapons, perks and game modes are virtually the same. There seems to be essentially no difference between the two games other than the time period of modern vs. WWII. Perhaps then not having played COD4 is why I am enjoying COD5 right now.

Conclusion, try all three of those games if you can. If I had to choose one, I'd pick TF2.

EDIT for the post above mine asking about COD server population: COD5 has thousands of servers running. Seems to have more people on compared to TF2

I'm just replaying Ultimate DooM nowadays. I just can't get enough of that game. I guess it's like going back to an old friend. And kicking him in the nuts.

Yup, same here.

BTW XFire stats aren't the best to go off of, but COD4's population is still decent according to many sources. However, the most played FPS on PC is still CS 1.6.

That being said, I'll say L4D as well.

Good to see so much love for TF2. I loved Team Fortress back in the day, and I've been thinking about picking up The Orange Box. I may do that seeing how recommended TF2 is now.

as someone who loved cod4, and has put several hundred hours into the MP ( :( ), I finally bit the bullet and got codwaw...so far - I'm liking it much more than I ever have cod4. The SP was definitely lacking in contrast to codwaw, but the MP is much more tactical and the maps so much better...

I say give it a shot :)

Another plug for COD4 (fantastic FPS) and L4D.

If you want to try your hand with a 3rd person shooter, Dead Space is the game to get.

I still play BF2 the most. It's the most satisfying semi-realistic online shooter, imo. I also play a fair amount of TF2. L4D was fun while it lasted but I got tired of the campaigns and never really got into VS mode.

CoD4 is fun but the maps are mostly small console trash and grenade/artillery/helicopter spam can be infuriating. I did not buy CoD:WaW because of the complete and utter lack of realism. The weapon attachments are totally far-fetched and I hate how any nation can use the weapons of any other nation. When would the Russians be using American weapons? When would the Japanese use German weapons? They had virtually no contact even though they were allied.

WW2 games need to be class-based and at least grounded in realism for me. CoD:UO is my all-time favorite multiplayer game followed by the HL1 version of Day of Defeat.

My favorite shooter, thusfar, has been Day of Defeat: Source; although, I'm tiring of it. CoD 4 is too arcade-like for me, but it may grow on me. I'm considering shelling out the dough for CoD 5 to see what it's like. I like playing non-automatic, unscoped rifles in FPS games, so the M1 Garand and K98 from WW2 are a couple of my favorites.

What shooter doesn't follow a formula similar to this?

+1 for L4D

...if you have at least 3 other friends to play with, nothing beats it IMO. If you have 7 other friends, nothing even comes close.

COD:WaW will be releasing a new patch soon that will add a recording function and fix the spawns. After that the game will be perfect for me. Oh yeah they announced 4 new maps coming in early March. One of them a zombie map.

My advice was L4D before the 50% off sale this weekend. Now it's even better.

I'm surprised more people don't advise Day of Defeat:Source. You can always find a game and it is a solid FPS. Like I alluded to before, CoD 4 seems like an arcade game by comparison. Also, it's $10. DoD:S is a great game to practice on for other FPS, particularly with using the rifles helps FPS play across the board, IMO. It is an old game, but does that necessarily mean bad? The stats systems of other games are an improvement, but the gameplay of DoD:S is pretty darn nice for $10. I think it is a must try.

Anything from Valve god damn it.

They are one of the only companies in a handful who always remember what video games are about: fun comes first.

I hated Portal talks and videos, and then I decided to actually try it cause I was bored and fell it love with it. Valve has a tendency to do that <_<. Gonna try TF2 next, as wack as it sounds. I'll probably end up becoming addicted to it.

DOD:S is fun, but I've noticed almost all the server admins are total dicks. Mostly retired military guys with chips on their shoulders.
