*POST* your i7 setup specks

GJohn, I'm having case envy. :D
What are you prime temps with that OC? Voltages?
I get to about 75ºC under prime on all cores with 1.875v. I can actually get prime stable upto 167 BCLK @ that voltage but the stupid thing tells me my OC failed every time I wake it from sleep.

EDIT: This is why I shouldn't post at 2am I meant 1.1875v

While ago i bought 7900GTX from ebay and it went bad on me and i could not do anything about it. Spend the extra money and get it from a store, its not worth risking it.
Even if you buy it new from an e-tailer's ebay store (buy.com's ebay store for example)?

sorry, it's off topic but I was just wondering...

Also, GJohn, what are your BIOS settings for that OC if you don't mind. I was thinking along the same lines for my 920

Temps around 60c no load and 1.4v

For now i am gonna run at stock speeds until I get a better cooler.

I only changed the AI Tuner from "Auto" to "CPU Step up" for 965...lol

These part were some I had, and some new, the new ones were mostly chosen for their price and features.

I haven't done any overclocking yet, so far I haven't found anything that will even tax this thing

The card is still warrantied so who cares if I bought it new from Ebay. The card was never registered. I have no plans on using the step up anyway and I have never had any issues buying cards on Ebay.

CPU: Core i7 965
MoBo: Asus P6T Deluxe
HSF: Noctua U12P
Ram: Crucial 3x2GB 1333mhz DDR3
GPU: 2x Zotac GTX 260 (216 Core, OC'ed) SLI
PSU: Corsair 750TX
Case: HAF 932

965 Worth it? Maybe. Maybe not. I could have got a used Pinto instead of my newish Mustang as well, and skipped the leather seats, etc. I only live once though and I can afford it.

Go for it. If I could afford the 965 I'd have it too.

One good thing about that chip is if you move to cooling like a Vapochill you should be able to get far beyond what people would get with a 920.

Anywho enjoy, and I know you will.

I am up around NYC this weekend, man I miss my machine!! I loved playing WOW on it.

No proof of purchase = you cannot RMA the card. EVGA site clearly says, no ebay.

just ordered everything but I switched the Ram to OCZ Gold 6GB (3 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800)

The Corsair Dominators are OOS on the egg, shouldn't make much of a difference both are solid brands and same timings.

Looks like I got the last set of that ram because its OOS after placing my order lol.. Should get everything next week, but I will have to run the stock HS because everyone, everywhere is out of the Thermalright 1366 Bolt-thru kit. :(

Edit:
Just called Newegg, to verify Shipping address, (have had a lot of orders held up because shipping was different than billings etc). To my surprise the CSR told me it had just shipped out and I would receive my tracking numbers by the end of the day! :D

Probably won't get everything till Tuesday with the holiday weekend and all, but I might see it this Friday, had it shipped to work and whenever we order something from Newegg for work it always comes the next morning.

I love newegg.com, I ordered last night @ 6pm PST and I just got my order for all the stuff for my dad's new gaming computer ~ an hour ago 12:30PM PST.
It took them 18h to get it here with std shipping and non rush processing. Impressive.

Anyways the specs are:
Core i7 920
Gigabyte EX58-DS4
Crucial 3x2GB DDR3-1333
ATi Radeon 4870 1GB
2x 1TB WD Black
Lian Li v1010b

Just spent some time over at the eVGA forums, and it looks like as long as you can provide proof of purchase from an authorized store, you're good to go. So SOME ebay stores like TechTreasure are fine because they're really mwave.com anyway, and you receive an invoice with mwave.com on it. Hope this helps.

This is correct. Evga requires a retailer invoice or receipt for warranty repairs or the step up program.

EDIT:

I got 3.6GHz on the stock cooler with 1.28v. I could boot with 1.25v. The CPU test in 06 would freeze half way through though. 1.28v cured that.

I got idles in the high 40s and load for normal applications is in the mid 60s. No, I'm not going to bother dropping prime on my CPU with the stock cooler.

I am eager to get my Ultra Extreme installed again. I will be shooting for 3.9 and if it takes more than 1.375v to hold it, I probably won't bother.

That CMOS reset button is nice. It's saved me some trouble a few times.

So far I like this 920 and the Foxconn mobo a lot. I'll be able to test SLi as soon as I get a flexible SLi bridge.

On a side note, my Evga vanilla GTX 260 can do the same clocks as my XFX, or that is 730 with a 1532 shader clock. Can't wait to test 'em in SLi.

Old post-

This is what I am building. I put prices by new purchases-

CPU: 920 (299usd)
MB: Foxconn Renaissance (277usd)
RAM: Mushkin 998681 XP3-12800 (3x2GB) (270usd)

Other system details-

Graphics Cards: GTX 260 SLi (220usd ea.)
HD: WD Raptor 74GB HD (x2) in RAID, Single WD Cavier 500Gb in regular SATA.
Monitor: DoubleSight DS-263N (1920x1200)
PSU: SILVERSTONE OP1000-E
OS: Vista HP x64 SP1

-----------------
Haven't overclocked yet. I need to get the 1366 adapter kit for my Thermalright Ultra Extreme. I'll likely do 3.3GHz with the stock cooler until I get that done. Hopefully I'll have solid OC results by next week.

-----------------
I chose the CPU, mobo, ram and graphics cards all based on price vs performance. Heck same thing with the monitor. One using the same panel from NEC would be over 1k. From DS it was 720.

Another reason I got the 920 is I air OC. More costly CPUs aren't going to get much beyond the 920's max on air.

I game 1920x with AA. GTX 260 SLi has a good amount of ram and with a decent overclock is plenty for that res. I wanted to stay away from 512Mb cards. I am also looking forward to growing PhysX support in games.

I got the PSU because it's a standard size and kicks out 1k watt on a single rail.

Putting mine together as of today.
CPU I7 965 H20 cooled Aqua Cuplex DI
ASUS RE2
12GB Corsair Dominator 1600
2 WD VR 300 Raid 0
2 WD Black 1TB Raid 1, I think
Silverstone ZM 1200 PSU
LG Blu-Ray HD Burner
2 EVGA 280 GTX H20 cooled AquagraFX 280
Case Silverstone TJ07B
Samsung 305T

The H20 is dual loop with the CPU on a Aquaduct 360 external and the 280's on an internal 360 actively cooled with three 120mm Aqustifans. The case has an additional two Pabst 120mm exhaust fans up top, two 80mm AF's rear, 1 120mm in a Silverstone HDD enclosure up front and one 120mm exhaust on the side. The Aquaduct has three 120mm fans and all my fans, and pump settings are software controlled vis Aquasuite.
This will all be running tomorrow afternoon and OC'ing will begin after a good burn in.

Case Cooler Master 690 nVidia Edition

HDD: 2 x 500GB Seagates
PSU: Antec Truepower Quattro 850
ODD: 4 x Samsung DVD+-RW Drives
Monitors: LG L246WP & ASUS PW201

I was looking to upgrade to a new system and I was going to buy a 780i and QX9650, but saw the reviews about these, so I jumped.

I haven't gotten my Thermalright Ultra 120 Extreme in yet, so I have it clocked at 3.2 right now. I have it set at 1.05V

CPU: i7 920
MB: Gigabyte X58 Extreme
RAM: 3x2gb Corsair DHX DDR3 1600 9-9-9-24 1.8v (but running at 1.65v)

Total spent on these components: ~$600 (after live.com cashback)

Your OC settings: 3.6ghz and going up
cooling: lapped TRUE 120 w/ LGA1366 mounting kit
temps: idle = 38-41*C; load = ??? just built system last night & haven't tested yet (will edit later)

-----------------
Why you chose the setup you did (why you liked your mb and etc):

This upgrade was a no brainer since after some shopping around, the live.com cashback promo and selling off my Q6600/Asus M2F/8GB Corsair Dominators - I pretty much break even. At stock speeds, the 920 already benched better than my Q6600 at 3.6GHz. Going up to 3.2 then 3.6ghz on the 920 just increased that margin even further.

Went with the 920 because it's a great value and overclocks so easily to 3.6-3.8GHz.

I got the 6GB Corsair DHX DDR3 for $100 - so even though it's 1.8v RAM, it'll work for now. 1.65v Dominators are on the way.

I got the Gigabyte Extreme board because . . . I really liked the way it looked (everything else being relatively equal with other high end boards, it just boils down to which board looks better to you). I do like the board so far since the BIOS is really easy to work with and it overclocks very well.

HOWEVER, if I had to do it over again, I would get the NON-EXTREME version because the extra NB heatsink basically renders the top two PCI slots totally useless. And it's questionable how effective this NB heatsink really is. So, if you're trying to decide between the two models: GO FOR THE NON-EXTREME VERSION (unless you plan on water cooling) and save yourself the $40-$50!!!

Last note: using the Gigabyte X58 boards with a TRUE 120 in push/pull configuration WILL interfere with 12GB of Corsair Dominator or DHX RAM because the RAM heatsinks are very tall and the RAM in the slot nearest the CPU socket will probably not fit since it'll be blocked by the front TRUE 120mm fan!!!

what volts are you using for 3.6ghz??

I've got the BIOS set to 1.275v but seems like there's some serious Vdroop on the Gigabyte X58 boards as someone else mentioned elsewhere - since in Windows I'm showing 1.2v under load:

Sorry for the LARGE images - I had too many things open and couldn't make these any smaller and keep them legible:

i7screenie2.jpg

i7screenie1.jpg

I have to say that I'm really pleased with the overclocking abilities of this board and CPU. I've literally spent less than 30 minutes tweaking the BIOS last night and have it Prime stable at 3.60GHz with very reasonable temps (much better than I'd expected and seen elsewhere)!!!

When I have some more time late tonight, I'll see if I can mess around with 4.0GHz!!!

Isn't that a bit hot? You are near 70c o_O..

Below 70*C under 100% load is pretty respectable for the i7's . . . have you seen all the other reports of load temps in the 80's and 90's *C for these things??? I'm pretty happy being in the 60's on air. That's not much hotter than my Q6600 was.

1.2v and 3.6Ghz? Damn.Very nice.

I'm not truly at 1.200v. BIOS is set at 1.275v but Windows is reporting only 1.200v - lots of Vdroop on these Gigabyte boards I guess.

EDIT: just bumped it up to 1.3v and am running smoothly at 3.8GHz now. Will try the 4.0GHz mark and edit in the results...

CASE: Antec 1200
CPU: i7 920
Heatsink: Stock (Until TRUE 120 is in stock somewhere)
MB: Gigabyte GA-EX58-UD5P
RAM: Patriot 6gb (2gbx3) 1333mhz
GPU: 2 x Visiontek 4850
HDD: WD 1Tb
PSU: Antec Truepower Quattro 850

ODD: 3 x Pioneer DVR-212 (Beige (Anyone know where I can get replacement faceplates?))
Monitors: Dell 2407WFP-HC & Soyo Topaz S 24" (MVA Panel)

Still waiting on the CPU, MB, and RAM to get here from MWave. I bought it from there ebay fronts (Techtreasure and multiwavevideo), anyone know if they ever send the Tracking numbers? I got it with 2 day air so I'm hopeful it gets here around Wednesday.

They're also available locally in the Bay Area at Central Computers for any NorCal [H]'ers . . . yes, THAT Central Computers that sold the first i7 965EE a week before the NDA was lifted and caused all that fuss :)

Good to know! thanks for the info... I ended up getting a cooler master v8 though. I will water cool my i7 eventually but I want to keep my wc system intact while I build this new machine. :)

looks like a li-li PC-A05.
it has the PSU up front, pretty easy way to tell.

My XPS finally sold, the P6T and 4GB of ram is on the way ($99 for 2 sticks, $195 for 3. Fuck that. Ill grab another pair of sticks in the future for 4x2GB, or two kits for 6x2GB [and setup 6-8GB for a ramdisk for temp directories. ;)])

Went with this ram http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231190.
Hoping for 166x20 on the CPU and 1333/7 on the ram with the stock cooling. H2O may not happen, but a TRUE might get me 4Ghz...

Could you post your other BIOS voltages as well?

Thanks

I dont know if anyone has run into this problem, but for some reason it takes me 1.4vcore to run 4.0ghz stable @ 20X200. However, if i run 19X211, I run completely stable at 1.3vcore (50 loops of intelburnin).

Specs in sig.

Did you bump the uncore/QPI voltage at all? Its supposed to be pretty effective.
Otherwise, it doesn't sound that off, voltage can be pretty chip specific.
