I currently have an 8800GTX with a Q6600 running at 3.4ghz... I play games on a 30" dell (2560x1600 res)..

I was thinking about getting the ATI HD4870x2.... Is now a good time to buy I haven't been keeping up on what's on the horizon and whatnot..

Thanks :)

If you feel the GTX is not giving you all you need than yes a 4870x2 is going to be a decent step up for you. You're potential problem is the possibility that the next wave of cards might have DX11 compatibility. You could pull the trigger now and in three or four months sell the 4870x2 for a decent recovery of $. No one is certain about anything though.

Depends on whether you feel you want/need it now or if you can wait. There will always be newer better faster cards on the horizon. If you bought a 4870x2 or GTX 280 now you wouldn't necessarily be making a mistake.

I'd wait off. GTX still has plenty of power.

Not for 2560 gaming in new games really...

I know things are always coming out.. I'm merely wondering if there's anything new at all close to coming out.. Since it sounds like there isn't I think I'm going to make the leap to the 4870x2 :)

The card will work alright in an nvidia 680 mobo right?

thanks :)

If your GTX is struggling, then you can upgrade.

You need to decide whether or not you need to upgrade.

Yeah you can run a single just not crossfire of course

currently the 4870X2 is king of the hill, esp on a 30" monitor. it would be a NICE upgrade for you. However as for whats coming the next thing is the GTX280 die shrink, probably in November. Not expecting too much, hopefully a nice jump in clock speed. I don't think its going match the 4870X2 though, they would need more then a die shrink. for 450 AR I would do it, esp on a 30" monitor.

another option for you is a couple of GTX260 for about the same price. trades blows but might be better depending on the games you play. Also the price has come down on the GTX280, I expect them to tank after the die shrink (probably why we are seeing the die shrink in November rather then original date). you can pick up a couple of "old" GTX280 and run SLI.

Your GTX is obviously outdated, worthless, and is utterly useless for current gaming. I feel so bad for the piece of trash, that I will pay you for shipping so I can personally throw it in the trash.

4870x2 is a far better card than the gtx280...that's for sure. I think the real competition for the 4870x2 is the GTX260. I know this sounds crazy, but hear me out.

I totally know what you are talking about. Its like back with the 9800xt and 5950. The 5950 was way better because of.

For that monitor, I would go for the 4870x2 as many have said. However, it all depends on your budget. Around $270-300, you can get a 1GB 4870 which is also a very good high-end card.

Games are barely taking advantage of DX10 as it is... A 2nd GTX would be worth considering if he finds a used one or one on clearance for the right price imo (and if he's running an NV mobo already).
