Ok, so here goes.

I have had this OC (E2180@3GHz 1.42v) for some time now and in the middle of the day I was online and the power went out, just a quick on and off (did it a few times) each time the pc tried to come back on. After the power came back on and staid on I kept on getting a BSOD. I found that odd, so I dropped the OC to 2.8GHz at the same volts, still BSOD, after about 10 mins on the pc with nothing more than background stuff (AV, firewall etc) and FF open. I also kept on getting a windows msg saying something along the lines of "superfetch has failed", and then a few min. later BSOD.

I kept on going down on the OC till I was at 2.3GHz and still not stable, so I set everything back to defaults and (so far) its stable, but I have yet to run it long enough and plan to run it through a few hours of Prime.

Any ideas on whats going on here? It's got me baffled. The 3GHz OC I had been running for a long time and was stable through about 10 hours of prime. Another thing I saw was that my idle temps went up when I started lowering the OC, like when I went to 2.5GHz my temps were about 3-5C higher than when at 3GHz. Now at stock, idle is back at 23-24C.

Ok, guess it had nothing to do with the OC, BSOD again, did a restore and now when I boot up I get a "windows activation"

"an error has occurred

Code:
0xc004E002

Description:
The Software Licensing Service reported that the license store contains inconsistent data."

WTF? Going to boot into safe mode and try restoring again to another point, as I can't access my desktop with the stupid "windows activation" thing, when I click "close" it logs me off back to the log in screen.

WTF?

Lets say you were busy working raking leaves out in the yard. I sneak up behind you and bash you in the head with a big rock so hard you go unconscious and fall on your butt. Then your brain starts to recover from the trama and just as you start to wake back up, I bash you again knocking you silly again. You are now bleeding our of your ears. Repeat. You now have one pupil fixed and dilated and bleeding out of your ears. Still feel like raking leaves ?

Files on the hard drive were damaged by the initial crash and/or repeated loss of power while windows was trying to start. Why not just let it activate ? You could try a "repair" install also. I doubt scandisk or chkdsk will do any good but /shrug.

like Bill said.. sounds like vista currupted its self when it couldnt do a memory dump.. and this is why you should disable the power on after power failure in your bios.. lol people never learn.. just be happy it didnt fry your system.. :p

but im suprised your system didnt stay online.. we get power flickers all the time where i live and my system never turns off.. and im not running a ups on that system.. only one on my fileserver..

Funny shit!!:D

Just to be clear to the original poster, I am not trying to mock or poke fun at you. That actually is a fairly accurate representation of what your PC went through due to your power event and was an attempt to explain it with a bit of humor.

Yes, but it only did that after I did a restore to try and fix the BSOD I was getting 10-20mins into using the PC. I undid the restore and went to a later one and it booted to desktop fine (no activation crap screen), also, there was no option to "let it activate" just a "close" button which would log me off to the login screen.

I ran through the memory test from the install disk I have, came back clean. Did a chkdsk (first thing I did really) and it "found and repaired" a few bad sectors.

And don't worry, I found it some pretty funny shit like everyone else. :D

Never had trouble with it before as I had already set it in the BIOS, however I never changed it back after I went to all default settings for some benchmarking I had been doing.

It also was not just a "flicker" the power went off and everything in the house reset. If the power just flickers even if my mon. and TV go out my pc stays on.

What PSU are you running OP?

Rosewill, 600W, dual 12v, 19A a rail, and yes, I know, "crap" but its been fine to me so far with a stable 12.83v.

So far the system is stable now that I restored it back to the very first point. No BSOD so far *fingers crossed*.

Well, still crashing, just not as often.

How do you go about doing the "repair install" and can you even do it with an OEM copy of vista?

"Its been fine so far" = famous final words.

Seriously invest in a better PSU and a UPS. I was never sure about getting a UPS for my rig until i found one on sale. Now that i have one it is absolutely essential to my setup and i cannot live without it.

As to your current problem, reformat and start from fresh it would appear you have some data corruption. I would even check your disks for bad sectors just for good measure.

Well, until the PSU is the problem I will keep it, or until I order my quad, which might be pretty soon, as I don't want to upgrade unless I get a 1000W+ PSU (planed upgrades)

I already checked for bad sectors, first thing I did. I am just trying to be hopeful that there is another way as reinstalling all my progs will sure be a pain in the ass.

Don't you have a Vista disc to reinstall? Its fairly clear you got a custom rig, so why not just reinstall using the same DVD you used the first time around?

oops missed the vista thing, I dont think it has a "repair install" option like xp does and since I am still on XP I dont know the procedure but there are a lot of hits for "Vista repair install" and you might find something that will fix the corrupted files without loosing all you data and programs. Its up to you to decide if a clean reinstall vs trying to repair it is worth the effort.

Yeah, full custom, but the disk is an OEM copy, which are very restrictive on installs, support etc. and didn't want to reinstall all my progs as I don't really have the time for all that right now.

Nope, no "repair" on Vista, I was thinking you were talking about XP, but thought maybe you knew some way I didn't. I had looked up "vista repair install" and got some good hits on Google, however they said it could not be done with an SP1 disk I believe, which is what I have, and said something about needing it to be a "full retail" disk, wile mine is an OEM.

So far no crashes in the last 10 or so hours, got a "host process" error, every now and again before that, but none yet in the 10 hours. Oh well, when I have the time I guess I will just have to reinstall vista.

Well...I reinstalled vista a few days ago...And I am still getting BSOD's on and off, most of the time wile the pc is idle at night or not in use, and I am still getting the "host process" errors. What gives?

I will repeat again the drive was formatted and I did a full reinstall of vista.

I was thinking it was my OC, even though it is stable through Prime and Intelburn (max temp 40-45c). so I kept on upping the volts, from 1.42v to 1.46 and it didn't do anything.
