Has anyone seen the Dell 2709W in action?

I'm tired of waiting for the "fixed" 2408 and there is a nice deal on the 2709W here in Europe, and they have it in stock.
I don't care that much about the input lag, as i am a very casual gamer, but I can't stand backlight bleed, and I'm pretty scared by the huge backlight bleed on the current 2408's.
Any input from people who own, or have seen, a 2709W would be great.
Thanks

There is no huge backlight bleed on 2408.
Backlight uniformity problem is related to a different monitor - 3008.

See a review at prad.de
For a mid-level monitor on PVA - it's very good.

Ok, it sure looks like it on pretty much all the youtube videos of the 2408.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qrqUlrzVA3g and so on.. very bright left side of the screen when a black picture is shown, but hey, i shouldnt judge anything based on a youtube video.

Btw. Thanks for the review link..

Babelfish translates the headline of the review to
"Multimedia display with mad image quality"
Hope that's good :D

I am seriously considering picking this up.

I will be either grabbing a 3007WFP or the 2709W

I primarily code, but may toss a game or movie up too, and the 30" would be nice for that, and lag is my one concern on the 2709.

Hmph. Wish there were more reviews on the 2709 in the wild :(

30" LCDs are becoming much more interesting with the imminent launch of the 4870X2.
The only issues I have with 30"LCD are poor black, lack of uniformity, high price and (depending of the model) input lag.

Probubly one of their employees that got it for free.

That 's all there is so far

Dave

There are more out and about if you look :) But still in short supply, hence me wanting more :p

I'm leaning towards the 30" 3007 though. IPS panel, minimal lag, bigger screen and whatnot.

Though the 27" has better color and inputs :p

There is no huge backlight bleed on 2408.

uhh, not with #000000, but switch to a dark grey and you'll get this:

Had three 2408's, all suffered from this phenomenon... Friend of mine has ordered a 2709, I'll keep you posted, just remind me :)

anyword yet. ive been looking at this quite a bit... want to know more.

I have and I like it. I came from a 2405 so its a huge improvement to me. I use it with a Macbook Pro and a PS3. I do not notice any input lag nor am I an "competitive" gamer. I did not notice any input lag on the 2405 either.

The touch sensitive buttons suck. It works most of the time but I'd prefer hard buttons like on the 2405. I also don't like that I can't skip inputs. I don't use composite/component/displayport/svideo/vga/dvi2 so why do I have to cycle through them.

If you have any specific questions I can try and answer them.

Is a Dell UltraSharp 2709W a good monitor for $600?

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Just noticed that Dell has one of these guys, a Dell UltraSharp 2709W, as one of the 'Deals of the Day' (http://accessories.dell.com/sna/prod...1&sku=223-9379)

For $600, is it a good deal for that screen?

Unfortunately this is a Canada only "deal of the day" for TODAY ONLY.

Here is the working link:

http://accessories.dell.com/sna/pro...l.aspx?c=ca&l=en&s=dhs&cs=cadhs1&sku=223-9379

I'll let you know what I think of it. $599 is the same price as the 2408WFP. I could not resist.

If I can fully review it before my vacation to Greece, I will do so.

wow that is a damn good price, I could live w/ some the issues that were stated in some reviews for that price

Man I want to buy this, I have been waiting for so long looking for either a tv that can be a monitor as well or a monitor that can be a tv. I don't like the look of the benq everyone raves about. I have heard meh things about the samsung T240HD (TN panel) and people endlessly bitch about the 2408WFP(input lag). Is there any monitor that I should buy?

Study HardForum threads and reviews first.

My bad, I should have specified. I would love to have component, composite, hdmi, dvi, vga and it would be cool if it had a coaxial input as well but I can work around that.

And I am not spending
1600
900
and I am debating about the 600 dollars now

I am a student living in a dorm and I dont have *that* much room.

Please tell us what you think of it before you go on your vacation as I am interested in this Monitor. You don't have to do a full review if you don't have the time, but some thoughts on it would be great.

Sure.

I will post some thoughts. I think I will receive it middle of the week, so I'll post photos and impressions from a regular user point of view, not a "reviewers" eye

Thanks 10e. I really respect you opinion from reading other post of yours. You seem to know your stuff.

Hmm is this a good monitor or no?

You are given tons of facts to judge.
This review at prad.de is as rich in facts as never before. They have different reviewers and that really makes difference.

Absolute qualities.
Design and mechanics are discribed precisely.
Color accuracy is technically mediocre out of box and acceptable after calibration. Dummy sRGB mode.
Black level is excellent.
Range of brightness measured and explained.
27" - great size for movies and entertainement.
Full HD support with HDCP.
Selection of digital inputs.
No overscan, no image distortion - 2 DVI!

Relative qualities.
Large dot pitch? Good for reading, but critical for photo quality - a matter of your taste only.
Wide color gamut? Some people can tolerate this, some not - a matter of your taste only.
PVA panel with colorshift (there will be nothing different from this Dell 2707) and limited viewing angles ? Some people can tolerate this, some not - a matter of your taste only.
Glow? Those addicted to LCD glow will find it on 27" PVA. Expect the same on 2709W.
Input lag measured - 47ms. Technically significant? Yes, technically. That's all we can say. For someone it's nothing, for someone it's high - a matter of your taste only.
Bring 2709 home and measure yourself. On your own computer. Try all inputs. You might get 10ms more or 10ms less. What does it say to us? Again little. Nothing definite - all individual.
Sensors instead of regular buttons? A fancy toy - a matter of your taste only.

What else? Many details covered. They even didn't forget to mention a "green frame".
What is missing - statistics of hidden bugs after a longer use. But... we need practical users to know that.

Conclusion?
From the list of this facts, it's obviously a good monitor overall.
All it's specifics are in front of you.
Just decide what is right for you.

Much appreciated, and ask me anything you can think of once I get it. I will post some pictures and maybe even a quick video of it. I'm interested to see how their new button controls work too (weirdly enough).

Seeing that Prad.de gave it a glowing review with so many details covered I want to just check out its operation with things like Xbox 360/PS3 and my HD cable box (over DVI and HDMI), check for overscan, see what the colors are like (knowing that it is wide gamut).

Considering I got it for $599.99 (!!!!!!!!) I don't think I can go wrong with it. I've already sold another monitor to make space for it on my desk.

Here's to hoping it's all it's cracked up to be. Not a replacement for my NEC 26", but a solid compliment.

Thanks 10e. I really respect you opinion from reading other post of yours. You seem to know your stuff.

$600?!!? How did you manage that? :D
I have a growing interest in this monitor but would like some feedback from a casual users point of view. Things that im mostly concerned about is input lag and gamma shift. I had a play with a 2408 today and it wasnt so bad, pretty good actually. I'd get that but i need the larger pixels of the 2709. :)

2709 is pretty much enlarged 2408. Same colorshift.
Same or little better input lag.
If larger pixels are what you want, and you like 2408 - congrats!

So far, I'd say my impressions are mostly positive. I'll post more after work/tonight. For what I paid, this was a spectacular deal. Not one ounce of buyers' remorse. It does have some input lag. Average 8ms more than my NEC which is approximately 30ms, so it would be too high for intense FPS multiplayer gamers, but not "mouse dragging in quicksand". Tested HDMI with consoles, and it is excellent with proper 720p and 1080p aspect ratios and no overscan. More on that later as I only got it last night and started playing Madden 09 right away! :)

Dell (Canada only) was doing 9 days of web deals, and had this one on day 3 (methinks) for $599.99 + tax shipped. Total cost was $676.00 with "Canada taxes" :) shipped to my workplace. The gamma shift is less than I expected, and lower than MVA panels I've used, as there seems to be a wider "sweet spot". Very little, if any "black crush" with no calibration. Reading [H]ardForums was fine with both glasses and contacts, which I didn't like doing on MVAs in the past... I'll also try and truck out the CRT fury for more detailed shots and measurements.

You lucky Canadian bastards. hehe :p
I look forward to hearing more, especially on lag.

Sorry haven't had a chance to update due to work/life, but I don't think so. I'll check again tomorrow, as I'm out again tonight. Tomorrow I'll post some shots to give an idea because I'll have some more time.

I'll connect the USB ports and see if it also enables the media card reader, and if there is an OSD item to turn it off. I also want to see if it adds a bunch of extra removable drives to Windows Xplorer like some I've used.

Oh, one more thing...
Can the built in card readers be disabled?
Thanks

Well, you can just not bother plugging a USB cable into the monitor, then they're not fuctional.

10e, I just got a 2709W last night, any recomendations for calibration settings? The prad.de review is pretty vague.

Yeah, but i'd like to have use of the usb hub. I just dont want my Explorer window to be cluttered with drives i'll never use, but of course this has no bearing on my decision to buy or not. :)

hi all,
is planned a rev01 for this lcd, and if it is can it reduce a little the input lag? (now about 47ms)

After living with the monitor now for a couple of weeks...I can say that I've gotten used to it.

The buttons do take some getting used to...but I've learn to apply the right amount of pressure for it to respond normally.

I've been using it with a MacBook Pro and a PS3. I also have the soundbar hooked up as well. I must say that soundbar does a pretty decent job. Its no where near audiophile quality, but for what I need it for it works better than expected. I have it Y cable set up with an 1/8" coupler so I can get sound from HDMI(PS3) and my laptop at the same time.

I ran the LCD lag test from Guitar Hero and I got 0ms. I'm sure that's not that accurate but for playing Guitar Hero it tells me I'm all set.

I have it on a ergotron LX arm and its great. The only problem I have is that the HDMI pops out sometimes...but that's due to the inherent design of the HDMI connector.

I wish I could skip inputs that I am not using and cycle through them easier...other than that I really like this monitor.

I got my 2709W about a day ago and measured lag to be about 60ms average. There is a pinkish hue on both left and right sides of the monitor with the bottom right being the most noticeable.

Does anyone know how to access the service menu? The old "menu and +" doesn't work because of the 2709W's "touch sensitive" button design.
