4870x2 Shuts Computer Power Off

I purchased a Visiontek 4870x2 and I have spend the last few days trying everything I know to get the card to work. I have tried every driver I could lay hands on including the beta drivers.
I followed all the steps recommended by people here to make sure it was a clean driver install but to no avail. The card either A. Shuts the computer off (not down or reboot a hard power off) after about 2-5 min in any game. or B. the computer locks up. I also purchased a corsair hx 1000w which is now currently powering the video card so I don't believe power supply is a issue. All 3d is completely dead stick

Asus Maximus Formula x38
Intel Q9450 2.66 ghz @ 3.4 ( not a overclock issue Prime 95 stable for 2+ weeks at clock speed)
8gb Gskill ddr2 1000 @ 850
Visiontek HD 4870x2
Creative SB XFI Xtreme music
Dell Perc 5/i (with tape mod for intel Chipsets)
8x 250gb WD RE hard drives
2x dvd burners
2x dvd-roms
1000w Corsiar HX 1000
OS: Windows Vista 64 Ultimate

What do you guys think is the problem? I have Already RMAed the card once for this exact same issue and i am under the impression that the possibility of two cards having the exact same problem is incredibly low. I know everyone loves to finger the power supply as the issue but it is neither a low wattage nor a low quality power supply and the issue does not occur with my 8800gt. What the hell i want to use 3d on my brand new video card.:mad:
 
Have you looked at BIOS and chip-set updates? Or do you have another system you can throw it in?
 
Its your power supply I bet you 10 to 1. An 8800 GT uses far less juice and what you describe has all the signs of such an issue. Plus, even if your PS is a good one, after a year or two most will lose about 20% of their "out of the box" power. It just happens over time.

I had this exact same issue last spring with my system (8800 GTX based). I upgraded my CPU from an X2 5200+ to a hungrier X2 6400+ (125 W). Shortly after I started having crashes a few minutes into playing Oblivion. It would just shut off like someone pulled the plug. It then spread to my other games like LotRO and WoW. Finally replaced the year and a half old Antec 450 W PS with a new 650 W model as an experiment. Solved the problem immediately. I almost guarantee its your PS not having enough capacity for your new monster!
 
Have you tried running a stock system?
I'd also suggest trying another ciruit in the same room or another to see if it's a low power from the wall issue.

Try gaming with only the needed one or two hard drives, one DVD to see if it still shuts off.

Hell 4 rooms and the hall way connecting them are all on the same god damn circuit. Who ever wired the house did not do a good job of circuit layout. Hell a good half the lower floor is on the same circuit it is almost like they decided via dart board.

Off my rambling.

I have updated the board to latest bios and that did not resolved the issue. I could try running the system at stock but it does not seem to me that would cause theses symptoms. All drivers are up to date for everything.

the whole reason i bought that corsair is because i was led to believe that it should be more than adequate to handle what I'm asking of it. I am far under estimating my power usage or it is most likely bad power from my electrical circuits? Or a defective power supply?

O.K., you could have mentioned your power supply situation and tripping of the breakers your first post.
 
IF you've got a 1000Watt Corsair, it is NOT the PSU. (Unless of coursse you got a rare bad one, but doubtful if the 8800 GT is fine). However, saying that you've tripped the breaker on that cirucit is a no brainer it is your house's wiring.

well if i shut off extra machines the breakers haven't gotten tripped in a while. But i did mention that the power supply i had bought specifically for this purpose is what most people suspect. how much frikken amps does the 4870x2 need? i have even made sure the card was balanced over rail 1 and 2 so i did not exceed the 40a on any one rail. i will try moving the system to a different circuit later tonight. On a off hand note i wonder if a gtx 280 would have had this issue since it uses less power.

Looks like you're going to need to hire an electrician to rewire/add updated ciruits capable of todays power needs. :(

that is a pain. I am in the same situation.
I am running 450w psu and a gtx260.
If I turn on my ceiling fan and my TV while I am gaming my breaker will trip within 10 minutes, and My PC doesn't even draw 500w.

I'm having similar issues. My computer will run normal when playing cod4 (i can play for hrs and quit) But when it comes to Counter Strike source i can play long as i want but when its time to quit and i exit the game it reboots. Also certain videos (playing for 10mins will also cause my system to reboot)

I have a good ventilated case with good air flow. Along with a PCPC Turbocool 860watt with native 8 pin, with latest bios updates.
 
Maybe try a UPS and see if that solves the power tripping issue, and even if it doesnt, you'll at least have time to shut down properly without having the machine go hard off.
 
All said and done your system is probably drawing 500Watts. generally you should try to keep the PSU at 1.2 times the system draw or more. You've got more than enough PSU.

QFT try picking up an APC and see what that does for you.

I agree here, you may just have some bad wiring, the 4870X2 may have been the straw that broke the camels back. your not pulling that much power with your system so I suspect that its a wiring / breaker issue. I have seen some pretty crappy wiring jobs before, fixing it was as simple as redoing the connections

and I don't think a GTX280 is going to do better. It does use less power (and quieter) but I think your problems are elsewhere.
 
what APC to you guys recommend? I don't want to complicate matters by buying a UPS that cant handle the load Im putting on it

The UPS wouldn't stop it, but it would confirm the wiring was the problem.

I don't know how the thread got to this point, however just try lowering your cpu overclock to defaults and see what happens. saying it worked with your 8800gt really means nothing because that card would have been gpu bottlenecking you. now with a hugely better videocard, the cpu and ram have to work much harder.
 
An even more expensive experiment is blowing out a component due to the hard shutdowns. I'm actually only using i think a 650VA ups that i got on sale at BB for like 50 bucks. It only holds out for around 5 minutes but its enough to give me stable power as i live in an apt with craptacular wiring and get the lovely dimming lights here and there.

You stated you have a limited number of circuits. Look at what's using the same circuit as your rig and plug some devices on another circuit to lighten that circuit's load.

For grins and giggles, leave everything as is, but turn your memory bus speed down one FSB grade.

I have complete memtest86+/Prime95 stability on my DX38BT/QX9650 and DX48BT2/QX9770 rigs with the memory running at the rated speeds of 1333 and 1600. But when I run a game, it reboots within a minute. If I turn the memory bus speeds down to 1066 and 1333 respectively everything is rock solid. I even had massive overclocks before when I had the 8800GTX in the system. I have a 1.1kW supply (more than enough), in my Blackbird 002 case.

I guess I'm just going to have to live with lower memory speeds to keep everything stable. I was able to turn my latencies down though on my Corsair DDR3 memory from 9,9,9,24 to 6,6,6,12 at 1333 to help offset the lower memory bus speeds.

I know this sounds crazy and unrelated, but it fixed my 4870X2 reboot issues.

What are the circuit switches in your box rated at? I am running all 20 amp circuits in my house except for my kitchen which uses a 15 amp circuit. the 15 amp circuit is inadequate for my kitchen when i use both my toaster and my microwave and it will trip the breaker this was never an issue with my old microwave because it was only a 650 watt. my new on is a 1250 watt. It could be the breaker can't handle the draw that is put on it. Try putting in a 20 or 25 amp circuit if it is indeed a 15 or lower.

Now there is a thought. As said on the previous page, 1.2 times the power or greater should fine. I highly doubt that yer rig is over taxing your P/S. Otherwise you would have a fire on your hands. However, if you have old or poor wiring, or if your breaker is not rated that high.....that could be the problem. It has happened to me in the past. Too much on too small of a circuit = blown breakers and shut downs.
 
I have a 20amp and when my 60" plasma and microwave are on @ same time it trips after 30 sec. There could be more "hidden" loops on that circuit as well as not all electricians are "on the level".

it's not a stupid question, you're exactly right....if the cause of the problem does lie in the house's wiring, no UPS on the planet is going to fix the problem. if you charge it up completely before you connect the computer to it, the problem will stop for a while....but with the computer pulling power faster than the house wiring can recharge, it will start again fairly quickly.

you also don't want to permanently replace the circuit breaker with one of a higher amperage rating like someone suggested....those amperage ratings are there for a reason, and that's because that's all that the house's wiring is specced to handle. a circuit breaker trips when more power is being drawn than the wiring can handle safely, so you don't start a fire. replacing the circuit breaker with a higher-rated breaker will allow even more current to pass through that wire, causing it to get a lot hotter than it should....keep it up long enough, and you could lose your house.

if it is the wiring, there are really only 2 practical options:

1) unplug some of the other stuff that's on the same circuit, or
2) hire an electrician to upgrade your wiring and/or create smaller circuits.

It's the power supply. Get a bigger one.

So let me recap the recommendations

Power

a. Move computer to a less loaded circuit / Lighten load on circuit by disconnecting other devices

b. Use a UPS with AFC.

c. Check circuit switch rating

d. Get circuit rewired if wiring can't handle load

System Settings

a. Run computer at stock to isolate possible overclock issues / Lower FSB

b. Edit fan profiles to isolate over heating issues

c. Deactivate Power Play


Is this accurate? I hear both "your power supply is inadequate" and "Power supply is fine for your needs". Most responses have leaned towards power supply as the issue but i also see alot of responses pointing to my house's crappy wiring as the culprit.

That is caused by the circuit being overloaded. That has nothing to do with the PSU.
 
I'd actually bet the power supply is defective... I had the exact same problem with a computer I built for someone, and if it was your houses wiring, the wires in your wall would be so hot from overcurrent because your breaker didn't trip, that you'd be able to smell it. I'm guessing your outlets in your house are wired with 12/2 (or maybe 14/2 depending on the year your home was built, but that's still unlikely), and 12/2 is electrically stable up to 20a. If your 20a breaker isn't tripping, it means one of two things.

1, your breaker is bad
2, you're not drawing over 20 amps.

It sounds to me like your power supply is adequate, but it's defective.

I agree with Jasonx82. The power supply has more than enough juice for this rig. If in doubt get a kill-a-watt and test for yourself.

My suggestion would be to return the video card and try a different brand.
